Guess it's all about the trans fluid. Check with your dealers for comparsion price.
My dealer is very good regarding costs. My other services have been very low in cost.

Had it not been for trying to maintain the lifetime warranty obligation I wouldn't have had it done. Seriously. But, you never know, I guess.

It bothered me that they had to open up the trans to do the work. They didn't like it, either. It's the first one they've done. It took them two hours and I was charged for one hour labor. When it's factory sealed I like it to stay that way. Had they been able to do the work by the typical method (the service manager explained it to me) it would have cost about 150.00. Again, it's all about the trans fluid. The service manager was floored at the cost. Even apologized for it.

Again, just fyi.

Eh, who said owning a vehicle was cheap? I'd much rather pay maintenance than a towing bill and disastrous repairs later on, not to mention the time that was lost.

the oil is a killer, my dealer actually discounted me due to being embaressed by the price, they misread the book as to when it was due, luckily i have noticed ythe fluid is available on ebay much cheaper, but having said that not something you can do youreself the cvt liftime warranty isnt worth screwing with

first of all, 60000 miles are nearly 100k km , this means your pat is working fine !
2nd, don't be angry , I did first check here in italy , 15000 km , and spent 350 euros ( more than 430 usd ..).
be happy !!

CVT is practicaly sealed for life --It should only need checking If your Jeep/Engine/Trans has led an abusive/hot/cold life at 60,000 miles. If it's not broke dont mend it. Have a look at it at 120,000 miles . Dealers just love having you spend this kind of money.

recently had my 60k service done

Dealers were asking for $750-$900 for the service.
That included cvt, pdu, and rdu.
Ended up having a local mechanic do it for $400.
As for whether you need it?
That is up to you.
Service schedule says 60k if you follow harsh, extreme schedule.
With lifetime waranty. Not taking chances.
Don't want them to try to get over on a warranty issue because of a technicality.

Hmm, if the brakes and tires can last to 60K miles, that might be the time I look to trade in for a 2011 or 2012, and avoid all those costs. That can be a lot of payments on a new one.

there is no way to service any automatic trans without droping the pan as the filters are inside the case. btw the cvt only takes 4 qts. You can but the fliud for about $15-20 per quart at many places including some dealers, ebay and from Redline Oil.

Hello read the post and wondered if the maintenance was needed to keep the lifetime warranty intact, because according to the jeep website.

" In order to maintain the lifetime coverage every, a dealer must perform a powertrain inspection every five years"

I know this sounds basic, but it sounds like all you have to do is take it in every 5 years and have it inspected. Any thoughts or are there any employees or dealers that have any insight?

That was i was told as well when i got mine. Take it in after 5 years. However since the dealer is only a few miles from me, i buy small maintenance items from them. Got a set of plugs, oil filter now and then, air filter. That way they have some record of me at least buying maintenance related items. I think the general idea was to get people into the dealership in five yeas. That is the general amount of time the average person keeps a car. Then they can present you with a bill of repairs to keep your warranty intact, or "I can offer you a nice trade for a 2012 fiat Panda"

By law, you are allowed to perform all maintenance items yourself, but you should keep all records to keep your warranty intact. For the CVT fluid/filter change you are going to need the special dipstick tool to properly read the fluid level. The dipstick reads the temperature of the fluid as well as a depth and you have to lookup on a chart if it's correct. I don't know what the tool costs, but you will want to factor that in to the self-service side of it, and keep the receipt for the tool.

Local Chrysler Jeep just quoted me $250 and I am looking into a friend mechanic's cost.

What is the fluid?
You need a CVT specific fluid. For the Jeep Patriot it is MOPAR CVTF+4. I have not found any aftermarket fluid that is warranty acceptable to this point and I have looked high and low. Universal fluids do not meet warranty requirements so you need to use a CVTF+4 specific fluid if you still have warranty.

If you are out of warranty there are a couple universal CVT fluids available that should/might work. As I recall Castrol offers a universal CVT fluid as does Redline. I believe I read that some Nissans use this same tranny so Nissan CVT fluid should/might work too if it was cheaper?

CVT's are notoriously picky about the fluid used in them however so I personally will actually use the OEM stuff unless I find a specific aftermarket CVTF+4 fluid. I personally wouldn't use a uiniversal CVT fluid even though I have and will without pause in regular AT's.

I have to agree with Tiptronic, "if it ain't broke, don't f.. with it".
My dealer tried to hit me up for a throttle body cleaning a while back, not cheap. It wasn't even an issue at the time. My Jeeps haven't needed "preventetive maintenance", so I'd leave the cvt until 120k.
