BREAKING NEWS - Lifetime Powertrain Warranty

This was just announced at our Chrysler coporate headquarters.

Starting today, July 26, Chrysler will offer our customers in the United States a new Lifetime Powertrain Warranty on most new Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles.

The program will be the first of its kind offered by any automaker, and it will apply to most new model-year 2006, 2007 and 2008 vehicles purchased from dealer inventory on or after July 26, 2007. The warranty will cover the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair covered powertrain components.

The new warranty is limited to the first registered owner or retail lessee. To maintain warranty coverage, the owner must have a powertrain inspection performed free of charge by an authorized Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealer once every five years. Vehicles will continue to have the three-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty for other components.

Booo.

Most people trade in their vehicles around 5 years/60,000 miles. It would negate the "lifetime" portion of the warranty. What a waste. Why not just offer a transferable 10/100,000 powertrain warranty instead of this not so "lifetime" one?

It is just a gimmick to get butts into the showrooms.

Why is everyone so upset? Deals come and go all the time. If you wait around for the next deal you will never get the vehicle. Its like buying a new computer. If I wait another 6 months I could get more memory, a faster system, etc, etc for the same price but I would have to go 6 more months on a 5 year old computer. You buy the best deal at the time you are ready to buy.

Since most people trade within 5 years, as previously mentioned, the "lifetime" part makes little sense. Again, as mentioned before, its a sales pitch to get people into the show rooms. I bet it works, though.

  • It looks good in print and on TV
  • sounds impressive
  • no real cost added to company as most will trade or sell inside 5years
  • brings in money because they must take it in for 'inspection' at least once every 5 years (think they will find other things that need to be fixed when inspecting?!?!)

It's good marketing.

This is awesome! For someone like me, who intends to keep a new car for 15-20 years, this is a much better deal than the 10/100K from Hyundai/Kia. As far as I'm concerned, this puts the Patriot several notches above the Kia Soul. I just wonder how long this will last. I remember when I was a kid that Ford introduced a lifetime warranty, but it was only offered for a few years, in the early 80s.

Calm down people. Sheesh!

Talked to my dealer. Since mine is still on order, I will be covered. Official start was 12:00pm EDT today and saves me almost a grand because I was going to get the extended powertrain warranty anyway. That makes wait seem a little more tolerable.

They also said they have been holding customers off on closures since they found out a week or so ago. They didn't give any details out but urged that it might be worth waiting a week.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. A good relationship with a reputable dealer pays. So far on this vehicle it's saved me about $1600 above the more than fair price I received in the first place.

As for the date, that's the way it goes. Chrysler is a business after all. I would think that if you closed the deal within the last week you might have a chance if your dealer gives a crap, but if you harranged them for every nickel and played one dealer off the other to twist their arm then probably not.

Wow, that's great! I'm also an owner who keeps my cars for long times. I'm giving my 11 year old Subaru Outback to my son-in-law when I get the Patriot. It may be a gimmick, but it's a nice gimmick!

I suspect wear and tear will not be covered; and in 8 to 10 years theres going to be alot of wear....

Also fine print may mean the lifetime of the car and not life time of the owner. Once your ride has 150k on it they may well say its worn out.

I'm looking at a Patriot and the warranty will have little to do with my choice.

Oh and for those who recently bought their Patriots...read the fine print, you CAN still get it, contact your dealer:

DCSC Lifetime Plans cover ONLY the first vehicle owner/lessee. DCSC LIFETIME PLANS ARE NON-TRANSFERABLE. DCSC Lifetime Plans
are only transferable in the state of New York ($50 transfer fee). Florida dealers are not eligible to participate in this program.

Don’t delay – Make sure you offer the new DCSC Lifetime Powertrain Plans with special
pricing to all of your existing 2006 and newer owners and lessees to ensure their continuing
