Hey everyone, just bought a 2017 Patriot. I know there’s a ton of posts on backup cameras on here, but just wanted to clarify, is it possible to install a third party camera and utilize OEM receiver/screen? Saw a lot about OBD and lockpicking that I don’t understand.

I bought a camera and went to hook it up quickly realizing that the receiver didn’t have the required RCA cable for the camera. Ordered a wiring harness on Amazon that said it would fit, but now idk. Any advice?

It’s possible, you just need an adapter to connect the camera to the radio and a way to activate it.

Like this one https://www.amazon.com/RED-WOLF-Wrangler-Aftermarket-Harness/dp/B07RJWM7LP

There are several ways to activate the camera. The easiest is going to a dealer and have them activate it.

You could use a mygiglockpick device that connects in between the radio harness MYGIG AIR It enables the camera as long as it remains connected to the radio.

If you have a Bluetooth obd device or obd cable, you can use the Appcar DiagFCA software on a laptop and enable it How it Works – Appcar DiagFCA – diagnostic tool

It may be possible, but might I ask why? This is the last new Jeep model after all, and while it's obviously your vehicle, your choice, etc., the Jeep name brings with it a certain image of simplicity, a certain ruggedness, and practicality that frankly makes me essentially short circuit every time I see somebody wanting a television screen on the dashboard, cameras and extra sensors, remote start, all that computerized stuff in a vehicle that screams for all that to be left behind for Cadillacs and Bentleys and their pavement-exclusive ways. So many brands make their name on having such gimmicks on all their models, so why not simply go with those vehicles if you want that level of.....frill? Again, your Jeep your call, just scratching the ol' noggin here.

This is perfect! Thank you so much! I already had the adapter and tried connecting but no video, now it makes sense. Bought the software but only have a WiFi OBD which isn’t compatible. Ordered a Bluetooth OBD on Amazon, so fingers crossed I can figure it out when that gets here. Thanks again!

Wow. I personally wouldn’t call seeing behind my vehicle while reversing a gimmick or even a frill...After having it on other vehicles it’s actually a necessity for me. I think majority of people on here would agree, I didn’t buy a Patriot to spend all my time off road and rugged. If that was the case I would have bought a Wrangler. Majority of my driving is in the city, so when I’m backing up, I don’t want to hit things.

You'd really hate my Patriot then, lol. Even Wranglers have cameras on them... on the front even. To each their own. But I do understand where you're coming from.

The J-wagen might have cameras, but a proper Wrangler doesn't. And I'm not speaking out against seeing where you're going....but the Patriot has really good visibility. Mirrors exist, and we as humans have a really cool ability to turn our heads to look around. My Patriot was bought as a college vehicle, but I quickly caught the Jeep bug. Yes it spends much of its time on pavement, only going wheeling a couple times a year, but it's still got that whole Jeep essence through and through. Crank windows, manual locks/mirrors/seats, just the basics on almost all fronts. Sure I wanted electric windows and the television screen, moonroof, 9-speaker sound system when I first got it, but after awhile you come to appreciate the simple things. Honestly the only factory feature that I kinda wish I had on mine right now is heated mirrors, haha.

Your opinion (which you have a right to ) but his Jeep to do with as he pleases. If you look at Patriot images online you will find all sorts of mods. From lifted to lowered. From custom to rugged. That is what owning a Jeep is about . Customizing it to ones own taste. Had a CJ5 years back. Had a stock 6 and grannie trans. Had a radio and heater with bare floors . Added a Warn winch , all terrain tires , spark arrester , six point roll cage and 4 point seat belts . All business. Now I have a 16 Pat High Alt. 4X4 . Almost all stock. Plans : All terrain tires , 2" lift, skid plates , and front/back tow hooks. Maybe a roof rack , maybe.

Show me the part in my post where I said he had no right do ruin his Jeep. There isn't one. I all but started off saying it's the owner's choice. I was just wondering, why, when there's no point?

I've still got my 2014 Patriot but we also have a 2nd Gen Compass. It is really a nanny-mobile. I'm loading my wagon today and it was cold and snowing. I decided to use the remote start (remote start is nothing I would have chosen but it came already on it). So I hit the remote start but it doesn't work if the tailgate is open! Think of the horrible danger that would pose! Yeah, I'm still pondering that. Whatever danger could possible happen to a car in Park with it's tailgate open while the engine warms up?

Or maybe you want to back up with a trailer attached so you open your door for better visibility since the back-up camera is pretty useless in that situation . . . Not! The e-brake automatically engages. Same thing as I'm parking in my driveway: I open my door and realize I'm stopped on a patch of ice so I'll let her roll forward a tad and get out on dry ground . . . Not! It's the e-brake again. Nanny-mobile thinks I'm wandering off with the vehicle rolling on its own. How about if I'm allowed to drive it the way I want?

The worst is touch-screen controls. They are a distraction to the driver and the sluggish response compounds the distraction. IMO touch screen controls for anything other than the radio should be illegal. It is outrageously dangerous.

If they really want a useful gizmo how about a device that lowers radio volume if the windows are open? Maybe that should be mandatory on all new vehicles. ;)

I personally hate nanny mobiles, but I'll bet that Anton Yelchin wishes the e-brake in his Grand Cherokee engaged automatically when he opened the door...

I absolutely agree with you about the touch screen controls and the radio volume.

I don't know the circumstances of his accident but if he got out of his vehicle with it running and still in gear then I think he has no one to blame but himself. If his Jeep started up on its own and ran over him -- like if the e-brake failed or it popped out of Park -- then I'd blame the vehicle.

Wasn't there something about his GC being under a recall? Again, I don't know much about it.

IIRC he put it in park, but the parking pall was defective. He then got out and walked in front if it to unlock his gate and the Jeep rolled forward, pinning him between the bumper and the gate.

That looks like the vehicle was at fault. Is that what the recall was about? Do you know if the recall was issued before the accident or as a result of it?

Fake Chekov had a shifter notorious for being mistakenly put into the wrong position. You push a button and move the lever up to three notches each way, to get it into P-R-N-D, then release and it whips back to upright while the vehicle in the new gear mode. Alot of people would be in a hurry, put it into reverse instead of park by accident, and get out while the vehicle rolled back. This resulted in fake Chekov getting out to check his mail and getting run over by his own Grand Compass WK2. The Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, and probably Durango too, all came with this shifter at one point. Apparently there's an alarm that initially "wasn't loud enough" because people don't like to listen when their car dings at them. Maybe all the new crap should just shut down and pull itself over if anything goes wrong?

I had a 1980ish Chevy with a dashboard indicator that must have been loose. I had to pay attention to the tranny bumps when I shifted because the little arrow could be lying.

As for ignoring the dings, there are so many they have to be ignored -- I truly screen them out at start-up. If they persist I'll take a look and see what's wrong.

Fake Checkov? I'd rather just call him Checkov, Junior. Checkov, Senior is probably in his 80s by now.
