Hi Patriotbrad,

Were you given a written estimate of what work would need to be completed? Or were you just given the verbal estimate?

Maybe it's just me...but $3-4K to fix a spring seems VERY outrageous! A professional body show can probably open that door in a minute or two, then an hour of work to remove/replace the interior panel and the spring--unless, they need to go off-shore for the part(s)...

PLEASE--get a 2nd opinion.

Something sure doesn't add up here. The factory service manual shows that you only have to remove the interior "bolster panel"......that's the easier middle plastic panel of the two piece unit.....to access the latch assembly. That should take less than 15 minutes. There are quite a few Google hits for Jeep Patriot Interior door panel removal.: https://www.google.com/search?q=jeep+patriot+rear+door+panel+removal&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

The latch mechanism is non repairable according to the manual and must be replaced as an assembly. They sell for about $100, depending if it is manual or electric. See if this link works:

Jeep Patriot Rear Door, Hardware Components, Patriot The latch assembly is part number three and it simply bolts in. What spring are they talking about???

Im getting a another guy to look at tonight. Oh and it took me around 2 hours to get the inside pannle off without a scratch or a dent. What a joke jeep saying they have to smash it!!!
hell yeah. i say take that **** apart and figure it out for yourself. you should be able to get in there and open the latch somehow then replace the latch mechanism.

i have seen old 1990's honda accords with this similar issue. basically you'd have to cut open an access hole in the A pillar to access the back of the pin the latch connects to. then cut it off. its crazy but jeep isnt the only one to have these issues.

You could cut the door open with a can opener and buy another door, repaint it for 1/4 of that. And that's worst case scenario. Take it to a body shop. Hell, they might get it open for free. And yes, I worked at a body shop, and fixed stuff like this for nothing.

So heres an up date. I brought a second hand power lock and pluged power into it to see if it lock and unlocks. Perfect, it worked. I was able to break the old one off and then get the door open. Yess!!! Then I unscrewed the old one. Then put the new 1 in. Then checked to see if the latch was secure on the body. That was fine. Then I carefully shut the door. Nice! Then opened it. Nice all works. Then I wiped my forehead. So I closed it again. Locked it with the key. Yeap, it locked. All works. Then unlocked it. Went to open it.... and.... nope didn't work! What the!!!! Even manually locking and unlocking it from inside, nothing. So now I'm back to square 1 with a locked up door!!!! So jeep were wrong with telling me the lock was stuffed. Looks more like the electrics. What do i do now?

Hey there,
sorry for digging out this old thread :).
I am having the same issue on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2004.
How have you or anyone else managed to brake the door or latch?
Cut the B-Pillar? Cut the door?

Regards, Achim

The manual Locks has nothing to do with the electronics. So there is something else going on there, unless it is moving enough with power only to bind it.

Get the door open again and check the action of the latch itself by hand. Also check to see if the part on the frame that the latch grabs is properly screwed in

I had an issue with my locks a while back and it was because the screws on the brackets that the lock grabs had come loose. The bracket would shift in just the right way to ham the mechanism. I held the brackets back in the right place (seen by the dirt outline of its original place) and retorqued the screws. Haven't had a problem since.

I have installed a broken latch. Handles and levers and electronics are working but do not move anything inside the latch. And I am not able to open the door. So I am thinking of ways to brake the door. With as little damage as possible.
