I recently changed my spark plugs for the first time and I noticed a ring of oil about halfway down the tube of the coil pack. Is this normal or not? Something tells me it isn’t.
I have a 2013 Jeep Patriot.

I just did my plugs yesterday. About halfway down the coil pack tube was a darkened ring with just a barely perceptible minute amount of oil there. That must be the area where the valve cover gasket is and that ring/oil is just from fumes or something.

I don't agree with everything in this video, but it shows the ring at minute 2:40. Unless there is a noticeable amount of oil there, I don't think it is anything to worry about.

This video shows the darkening and just a tad of wetness at exactly minute 1:29:

Mine looked like the coil pack in the first video but maybe a little more oil. I just wasn’t sure if it was a normal thing or something I should be worried about.

A slight ring is ok, but if it puddles up at the bottom of the spark plug well, you probably need to change the valve cover gasket (or whatever they call it now). It comes with gaskets that go around the spark plug holes.

Thank you for the replies. How likely is it to cross thread the plugs? I hand tightened them to get them started then finished with a wrench with just a quarter or so turn after tight.
If that's how you installed the plugs, then they are not cross threaded.
