The 2009 owner's manual doesn't have a schedule A or B, it only says change at least every 6000 miles, so as long as you do that, your warranty can't be denied because of oil-related stuff.
I use Mobil 1 EP 5W20 for now. Just took a 1750 mile round trip to California (back up 101 on the coast) and averaged 29+mpg.
a bit over 4000 miles on the oil, I'll probably change it about 5000.

Well, I've always done it every 3,000 miles, and that works for me, never any engine issues, ever, and I've driven many over 200,000 miles. Oil change is cheap protection.

Besides, with the lifetime powertrain warranty they require a change every 3,000-3,500 miles.

same here, my manual doesn't state an option A or option B, just says to change every 6K.... strange. I have an 09 2wd base model, not sure if that makes a difference. I always assumed the manuals were the same for all models.

I've never owned any other vehicle that has the Extreme use plan " B " clause. I think its a bit of a --Cop Out-- On the part of Chrysler . They obvously have little faith in the 2.4 world Engine. We dont have this schedule mentioned for the Diesel Patriot, but dont forget this unit is a well tried & tested VW engine!! Oil change every 9,000 whatever.

My Pat. goes in for its 2nd service & oil change tommorow 18.000 miles, I believe this also includes changing the hydraulic resevior brake fluid. I'll post up what they did & how much , also grade make of oil if i remember to ask...........Looks like Credit Card is going to get a hammering again!!!

No they don't. I have the lifetime waranty and never saw or heard anythijng other than no more than 6000 miles.

Can you provide a quote from the manual, page number, etc., or a photo of the page? my 2009 manual talks about the lifetime warranty, but it doesn't make any mention of oil change intervals, only that you have to have a powertrain inspection every 5 years. The maintenence schedule says 6000 miles between oil changes, that's it.
With practically any decent oil today, especualliy synthetics, you are wasting money by changing at 3000 iles. I've seen a UOA of Mobil 1 5W20 EP from a Honda Pilot, with 8000 miles on the oil, and oil was in excellent shape. TBN, viscosity, and insolubles were all excellent.

It's detailed in the service manual. I believe someone posted a link once to the page but it my have been lost when we had the system upgrade. If I find it, I will post. It showed the A and B schedule for the US. I know that for city drivers, you were under the B schedule and recommended to change every 3,000 miles.

But with todays advances in lubricants, the 3,000 miles intervals are really just hanging on to old habits. If you use synthetics, 5,000-6,000 miles will be just fine. Just be faithful to the changes and always change that filter.

EDIT:
I found this from our dear homac!

Those of us with '08s and '07s are not crazy! :)
The manual in my Patriot has the following (grabbed the '07 off the Jeep owner site) but the '08 manual I downloaded does not.

I know it is an "idiot light" but the change oil pops up in the odometer display anywhere between 2500 and 3500 miles.
Most of my driving is:
Stop and Go (city streets to and from work mostly)
Short trips (8 miles one way to work)

I have my manual in front of me, and it only says don't exceed 6000 miles or 6 months without an oil change. Chrysler can't expect most people to buy a service manual, or to hold them responsible for what's in it, if the one for 2009 still even has Schedule A and B. The lifetime warranty says only that you must have the powertrain inspected every 5 years. That's it.

It is very true that 3000 miles is way too soon to change the oil with almost any good quality oil, even most dino oils will go 4000 without any negative effect.

For the bold see my post above- it is from the OWNER'S MANUAL in my '08 Patriot. They obviously have changed the procedure sometime during/after the '08s. They have done that in other sections as well.

I am not disputing anything you have said.
Please hear and accept my side.
I use basic run of the mill cheap oil. In 6000 miles I will change my oil twice for a grand total of.... wait for it... wait for it.... $40.

So we can wonder why Chrysler decided to drop the two schedule thing.
Instead of an idiot light, they should have put an actual oil life monitor in these things. All this does is go off at 2500 after you reset it (in mine, at least), and I know that 2500 miles on Mobil 1 is completely ridiculous.

I'm not doubting you, just saying what my owner's manual says, and doesn't say.
Your plan is fine if you're fine with it, but for less than $40 you can have a top synthetic and filter and go 6000 and save yourself from getting under you Patriot a few times. But I understand that for many(including myself) it's not really a "chore" to change the oil, but is actually kind of fun.

I am glad I started this but now a new point. I just bought the Mobil 1 with the coupon I had for Advance ($22 for 5 quarts and a Mobil filter delivered) tonight and was very pleased with myself...until I got home!

In the mail was a letter from Jeep/Chrysler with a coupon book/service contract or whatever good for SIX (6) oil changes with filter!!!

I do not remember paying for this OR being offered it but it had to come from somewhere? Any suggestions/ideas?

In addition, I just dropped my Patriot at the dealers for them to install the cruise control I paid for at the point of sale and it has 3400 miles on it (no light, yet) so this is an opportune time - or is it! :pepper:
