WHat brand, type and viscosity (5/20 or 5/30) oil do you use in your Patriot?

I am ready for the first oil change and my mechanic wants me to use Castrol GTX and only that. However, I see Advance Auto Parts has Mobil 1 Synthetic on sale for $29.99 for 5 quarts AND filter - plus, I have a $10 off coupon which would bring that down to $20 plus taxes, which ain't too shabby!

Anyway, I looked and the search engine came back ZIP for "oil" even though there is thread here in the top 10 which has "oil" in the title!

So, here are the questions:

1. What Brand of motor oil do you use (Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil, synthetic, etc.)??

2. What viscosity (5/20, 5/30, 10/30, other)??

3. At how many miles do you change your oil??

wow, appears mobil 1 is the popular choice... Is the mopar oil the dealership uses any good? I went into the service dpt. last week to discuss servicing and was told that was the oil they use. I know, I know, I could just change the oil myself but I choose not to. The cost that the dealer charges is very close to that of all the local quick change places. According to my manual, oil change is required every 6k. The guy at the service dpt. said that every 6k is fine for warranty purposes, etc. 99% of my driving is on the freeway to and from work so will 6K be fine you think? I see some of you are changing every 3-4K...

So far I only have 1500 kms, in miles that would be ... lets see(1.6 x1500, divided by the lowest temp of the day in and odd year) I think its about 750 miles? anyway, I will be using full synthetic probably Quaker and at every 5000 kms or three months. As for warranty, in Canada, i believe that as long as you have documentation of the work, you don't really need to go to the dealer.

I use Canadian Tire Motormaster 100% synthetic 5w20. I change my oil every 5000 km. If you can get Mobile 1 at a good price, go for it. Many thread indicate that it's the best Syth oil.

mobil 1 synthetic, i usually change it at 5-6000 kilometers and mopar filter.

this last oil change i went 12000 Km on mopar filter and mobil 1 synthetic oil because it was my brothers wedding and i was so busy.

and the engine burned up about half litre of oil though,

for such a new vehicle with only 53000 km, it should be burning oil right?

5W30, and not too picky on brand as I change religiously very 3,000 miles. I think to maintain the life-time warrany you need to change between 3,000 and 3,500 miles.

I've always been a stickler for regular mait. though. Every 3,000 miles I change oil, add fuel injector cleaner, and every other oil change I rotate tires.

Of course I usually put somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles on my vehicles while I have them.

Why on earth in this day & age would you want to change your oil every 3000 miles??? You not running an old 55 Stovebolt Chevy!! Gas engines every 7500miles Diesel engines every 9000 . What a waste & no advantage!!

1. Official oil change schedule (for gas engine) is 6000 unless "severe" conditions then at 3000.
I have it changed at 3000 because I meet over half the "severe" conditions.
I have one of the "lifetime powertrain warranty" vehicles so I am not going to give Chrysler reason to deny a warranty claim.

2. I use cheap oil and filter (I don't know what the Goodyear Gemini service center is using and I really don't care) and at $20 a pop it is about the same overall cost of using a more expensive oil and filter and changing half as much. Doing my part to stimulate the economy I guess.

If you look in your owner's manual, most people meet a condition under schedule B which is every 3000 miles which I do using Wix Filters. I run 5w20 in Winter and 5w30 in Summer using Valvoline or Quaker State. I run a vehicle 140 to 160 thousand miles. Maybe it's overkill but I saw a commercial where Castrol says they have 10 times the wear protection over Mobile Synthetic. Remember, a dealer looks for ways to excuse warranty work. So oil changes are cheap protection in more than one way.
