Other than a hitch mount, which requires you to install a hitch, there aren't really any options. As for putting a sub in that spare tire area, no. Just no. Bad Jake! You can use the storage cubby and install a sub easily there, like I have on mine. You can just get the sub assembly box and factory sub from a parts puller (or pick your own compatible unit) for hardly anything and use that, but I don't think any sub will work unless you have an appropriate amp and the basic Patriot amp doesn't support subs, so far as I know, so that too is a cost and labor factor.

if you go with a donut, it will take up less room,
only other options is on next tires invest In runflats, will have less of a need for a spare,
or if you have roofrack/crossbars can mount it to the roof

If you build the mounting bracket

I thought of the roof, way forward above the driver. You will need a mounting bracket. Option two is the right rear quarter, but the mounting bracket issue again. Third option is above the hood like on a land rover. The mount can rest on the side rail to the engine compartment to support the weight off the hood. You have to be very creative in how you make the mounting bracket. Obviously you need to work metal, but it can be done.
However, it won't be pretty. Only the roof location passes the fair look test and for that there are many pictures of roof racks showing the tire as cargo. In Google Images searching for roof racks i got some good ideas.
In my case it was only a temporary placement. You may have more permanent ideas so i recommend the roof location.
The lift gate will not work due to the increased weight, but I've seen some patriots with different rear bumpers with the tire bracket built into it and it swings out of the way. In the end is your money. The roof location is the least expensive and most practical.
