Are you kidding? Dodge sold only 26000 Dakotas last year. They sell twice as many Wranglers every month then they sell Dakotas every year. For reference, it's main competitor, the Toyota Tacoma, sells almost 3 times that many every month.

Not to mention that their sales numbers have been dropping like a stone for the past few years. Here's the yearly sales for the Dakota:

1999: 144,148
2000: 177,395
2001: 154,479
2002: 130,712
2003: 111,273
2004: 105,614
2005: 104,051
2006: 76,098
2007: 50,702
2008: 26,044

EDIT: And, for reference, top 20 sales numbers for July:
1. Ford F-Series – 215,959
2. Toyota Camry – 184,216
3. Chevrolet Silverado – 177,566
4. Honda Accord – 160,817
5. Corolla/Matrix – 151,236
6. Honda Civic – 148,496
7. Nissan Altima – 115,680
8. Dodge Ram Pickup – 112,239
9. Ford Fusion -102,756
10. Honda CR-V – 98,068
11. Ford Escape – 96,643
12. Chevrolet Impala – 93,336
13. Ford Focus – 91,184
14. Chevrolet Malibu – 91,168
15. Toyota RAV4 – 78,153
16. Toyota Prius – 74,924
17. Toyota Tacoma – 65,713
18. Honda Odyssey – 63,339
19. GMC Sierra – 60,532
20. Ford E-Series Van – 54,680

EDIT the Second: Also, note that now, in a recession, the Ram sells almost as many monthly as the Dakota did yearly in its best year.

The Chrysler family of vehicles are popular with the government I believe. Now that the government is part owner, will be interesting to see how these numbers increase now. Wonder how much of the Ram numbers are government sales - if these sales are included in the statistics to begin with. When I say government, I mean federal and state. Here in PR for example I am starting to see more and more Dodge's as cop cars.

Those numbers do account for Fleet, government or otherwise, which is why pickups are right at the top-that, and the fact that the entries include every type of F-Series, Ram and Silverado. But compact pickups are still big Fleet vehicles too-IE, Whitehorse has been buying a lot of Tacomas and Colorados for fleet use (The Tacomas are going to Parks, the Colorados are for Bylaw).

Still, I'd like to see Fleet taken out, just to see how the numbers re-work.

Last I heard it was Dodge that was getting in the way. They keep having tantrums and stopping Jeep / Chrysler from moving forward on making the Gladiator. Jeep need to drop Chrysler / Dodge from the joint brand before anything will ever happen. I want a Gladiator so bad, but had to settle for a '83 J10 just so I had a Jeep truck.

Little does Jeep know that I have plans all ready to go if I win the lotto - I am going to buy an Unlimited, hack the back off it - extend the wheelbase and add a 3rd party tray to it. It won't be the cool box tray on the concept - but it will do.
Either that or I will get an unlimited and a (stupid) Dodge truck and simply take the body off the wrangler and put it on the crappy dodge frame. WHY can't Jeep do this though?!?!

To make it even worse - take a look at the Dodge Nitro - that's a Cherokee chasis, a Jeep motor, and the interiors are not that different either - it's good enough for Dodge to steal Jeep's stuff - but not ok for Jeep to use a dodge chasis to build a truck? That's just stupid.
If Dodge want to stop Jeep from selling trucks because they will take sales away from Dodge - Jeep should stop Dodge from selling SUV's because they are taking sales away from Jeep.

Jeep - make the Gladiator before someone else gets to it first (and by the way - I don't want a JT - they're too small, I need something with at least small back seats for a child restraint)

Yeah the Brute was awesome for the TJ (I had a TJ and sold it last year) but really want the mix of 4 seats and tray bed in a Jeep.
I've been eying that TJ unlimited for years. I could add a foot to the box and have a new Scrambler.

I just bought an original 1967 Gladiator last week. They are great trucks.

Jeep is totally missing the boat by not offering 2 pickups. They need to get that kind of idea in people's minds. The utility side of Jeep. There should be a Liberty/Commander based pickup and a Wrangler based pickup.

Here are some pics of Wranglers for sale at my dealers lot. It's called a Mercenary, and I believe they are only available here in KC. There are a number of different models, some more radical than others. The white one pictured is $44k. It wasn't on the lot very long. FULL factory warranty on stock parts, 3 yrs/36,000 on non-stock parts provided by the dealer.

surprised you guys didn't bring this up...Jeep Nukizer
QUOTE]

Seen it - Love it - not holding my breath though!

BUT what this does do is increase (or maintain) the pressure on Chrysler / Jeep / Fiat to seriously consider adding to their lineup with a small pickup. And I am very glad about this.

Is it just me of has the internet chatter about a Jeep truck picked up again over the past 6 months? Amazing to believe that over 5 years later people are still talking about this particular concept while almost all of the others have faded away into insignificance.

Great quote on one of the pages talking about Mopar's Jeep Nukizer (news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/04/military-maneuvers-we-drive-mopars-jeep-nukizer-715.html)

Looks like the love-child from a HUMMER/Wrangler fling...

Jeep hasn't had a pickup in the line since the AMC days, and they need one. They could fill a niche left by the old Chevy S-10 -- friend of mine love his with the 2.2 and it gets fuel economy to rival the Patriot. Someone else on our forum posted a concept of a Patriot pick-up which is pretty cool: http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33378

I fear if Jeep designs a pick-up under Fiat's guidance it will seat 2, have a ground clearance of 6", wheelbase of 80" and a capacity of 500 lbs including passengers! :icon_rolleyes:

I've seen that modified Wrangler hard top before. I don't think it is better than the square factory hard top, just a different look. Personally I like the squared off on better.

IF it were me....I would rebuild the Commander into a big Jeep utility vehicle. Offering a standard cab and extended cab pickup as well as a stripper serious off road version for the Jeep faithful with a removable top. Lots of power, no creature comforts to get in the way. I'd set it on a beefed up Wrangler Rubicon chassis.

And they'll make it Dodge to replace the dying Dakota, and it won't sell any better. Under the Jeep label they wouldn't be able to build them fast enough.
