Odd happening, driving on the beach hit a point when car seemed to be bogging down, gave it an easy increase of the gas pedal and nothing happened. Then hit the gas harder and nothing happened no rev increase. Shifted to neutral and back in to drive and wonder of wonders everything was fine. Happened three times this weekend. Didn't find anything with the search so thought this might be new.

as a side note, did you drop your tire pressure? Dropping tire pressure makes driving on sand so much easier!

was in 4X4 and esp was off, I usually don't drop pressure

Yes ESP was off and I was in 4X4. I generally don't bother dropping pressure since the car is so light. Never did with my Land Rover either. The Liberty, on the other hand, was pretty weak in sand requiring Low on the transaxle and dropping pressure.

My concern is that the CVT may have either a programming or mechanical problem.

Maybe ESP was not off...

I htought ESP went off when the 4X4 lock was used. If it doesn't then I need to play some more to see what is going on.

No, there is a separate switch for ESP control, just putting into 4x4 lock does not disable any ESP. Pressing it turns ESP partial off, press and holding turns it off completely (it will have an audible ding and the words ESP OFF will display in the odometer along with the yellow dash icon). I just had to have the dealer re-flash my ABS controller (there's a TSB # somewhere for this) to get the full off functioning.

You might have read something about the FDII, although since I have been on the forum that seems to vary also, but my FDII automatically turns the ESP off when in off road mode.
