Engine stalling at random or not starting

I have a 2007 Sport with the 2.4L , manual trans, and I experienced the same problem. It would either just not start (would crank) or randomly stall, even while driving it! Yipes! What was common, if I raised the hood, tapped around the relay box, it would start. Hmmmmm.
What I found is under the fuse/relay box mounted on the drivers side fender well (under the hood), one of the connections on this box had worked its way loose from the bottom. You have to remove the box and check all the snap-connections under neath. Since then I have not had one issue and it used to happen on a monthly basis, especially when it was really damp out.
Hope this helps.

I had my 08 Patriot (4,800 miles) stall when turning right from a stop light. 5-speed manual. It started running rough, I kicked the clutch in and tried to feather the gas pedal to no avail. It started again and ran fine. I've also noticed that it sometimes feels as if there is a 'stumble' under 2,000 RPM, even when at highway speeds. Intermittent issue.

Mine has been stalling intermittently for the last 6000 miles.

Dealer can't duplicate problem, may have to look into opening a Lemon Law case.

Mine happens at all speeds, but mostly at Highway speeds. She restarts herself due to inertia of the drivetrain.

I've about a 1000 miles on ine and she's quit on me about 6 times. Although I think it might be me. The Pat seems to like a few revs to keep her happy or she'll just shut down. But since I drop down a gear all seems fine. I'm used to an auto but my Pat's a 6 speed diesel manual.

it was a widespread problem on 07 vehicles...i believe that there are tsb/recalls for some of the issues...

my caliber has never done it, but an 04 caravan that we had would stall if you put it into reverse to quick

Ya, it was on the Liberty and Wranglers, the TPMS (If I recall) would think the key was in the off position if it sensed an error, they upped the time allowed before it would think the key was off to fix the issue. I mentioned it to the Dealer, but they said it'd be more widespread.

I've only encountered less than 10 people with the issue. I've filed 2 NHTSA reports due to the chance of an accident occurring. If I pass a car legally on a 2 lane road and it dies on me, I'm dead. I actually refuse to pass cars because of this concern. I know that can happen at anytime with any vehicle but my Patriot does it almost every other day and it usually does it in spurts like 5-10 times in a short distance of travel.

heavy key chain?

Touch wood. My Riot has never cut out on me yet. But I saw an interesting post on this subject on a Caliber forum some time ago.

Some Caliber owner experienced mysterious intermittent engine shut downs, and took it to the dealers several times.

On the final trip to the shop, they stumbled upon the problem caused by a heavy key chain loaded with a bunch of stuff. Ideally the ignition key is semi-locked in place in 'on' position. But they found that ignition key had some 'play' (not snug) in the ignition slot.

This dumb situation could be easily checked out and ruled-out. I use a naked key: no chain, no nuthin. ;)

Because of the CAN bus nature of the cars operating system and the communications between modules various "glitches" due to electrical noise can cause problems. In most cases these can be traced to loose wiring and bad connections.

It is uncommon because they generally do a pretty good job of checking things out at the factory, but very occasionally....

Interesting. I don't have much weight on my Key Chain, but I think I'll try moving my key around while idling to see if I can get it to occur.

My one concern is if it's in the 'Run' position it shouldn't need the key to be in, that's why thieves use screwdrivers to punch and start cars.

Patriot engine shut off

Lanie, please see my post from March 2009. I repaired the issue when I found loose connections under the fuse/relay box, drivers side engine compartment. I have not had one issue since I reseated all my connections.
Best of luck!

I learned today from a different dealer than I normally use that the Key recognition module has been responsible for a lot of Chrysler products with our symptoms. Mine has not been replaced yet, but it will be once I get my truck out of the shop.

2007 Jeep Patriot Engine Shut Down

My 2007 Jeep Patriot's engine shuts down while idling. My Patriot restarts everytime without a problem. It has happened 4 times so far and been at the dealership 2 times over the past 2 weeks. The service department has been very helpful but they can't reproduce the problem and there is no error code showing up. So far it has only happened while idiling but I drive the NJ GSP all the time and am very concerned about mine and my children's saftey. I almost always have my kids in the car and am concerned about it happening at a time when I don't have time to put the Jeep in park and restart it. Any suggestions? I see other people have had this problem but don't see where anyone found a concrete soultion to the problem.

have them check the key module

My girlfriend had this happen to her a couple months back in our 2011. She said she was turning and the car completely shut off! I told her " ok you probably bumped the shifter into neutral or something" she persisted that that wasn't the case that she was turning and it just shut off, she said the lights and gauges flashed and she had to put it in park after it came to a complete stop, It started back up and never happened to her again! Today when I was on my way to work stopped at a red light I noticed that the air was blowing warm air (don't know if this is related to the problem or a coincidence, The air is usually cold quick....not this time) the light turned green and it didn't move, it stalled! I put it in park and it started right back up. I'm going to the dealer but I figure they will be of no assistance!! if you have any tips advice please inform me!

@Afmcronnie- i'm assuming this happened to your patriot? and the problem was the key module? When I take it to the shop tomorrow, I would like to have a good starting point for them to look at. I'm afraid they will just tell me "everything's fine" when the reality is it's actually not!

so I just got back from the shop. They said they couldn't get the problem to duplicate, However jeep sent out a pcm upgrade so hopefully this fixed the problem! only time will tell.

engine shutting off

i just purchased a 2011 patriot a few months ago and the same problem happened to me twice the motor jus randomly shut down once wen i was in the middle of an intersection i took it back to the dealer and they said that the powertrain control module had malfunctioned. i had it replaced under warranty and since then it hasnt happened for the time being.

hey i have the same problem too, mine keep turnin off on me (2008 jeep patriot)
i was drivin 100km on the highway and it turned off on me  it wasnt fun at all, i took it over to the garage and they think its the chip in the key and the mod in the ignition. some im gettin a new mod today and hope the first one i got is a lemon..
