Engine shuts off...am I alone?

I have an 07 Patriot Limited and I've been having a number of problems lately. My car idles A LOT when I'm stopped at traffic lights, and more than a few times, my engine will just shut off. I can usually restart it without a problem but I can't imagine this is normal. I'm (obviously) not too engine-savvy. Does anyone know why this is happening?

you've probably got loose or corroded battery terminals/cables

I have the same problem. Mine is in the shop now for the 5th extended period. They think they may have isolated the issue but they have thought that before. I only have 10,000 miles on it. Be sure to contact the Jeep service line and get a ref number each time it is in the shop. We have ask Chrysler/Jeep for reimbursement of the Patriot and should have a response this week. I am sure they will do nothing. If not, I am prepeared to take legal action. I have almost been hit twice when the Patriot died at a busy intersection. Feel free to email me and I will be glad to let you know if they think they have it repaired this time.

I had this happen to me at a stop light in Louisville, KY. [ I blame KY ;-) ] I just restarted the Jeep and had no more issues with it. This was 5-6 mo. ago. Good luck!

so went to dealership about the stalling no codes, no errors , just what i figured
they did say that if you are forceing the fuel in to top off tank it caused access fuel to build up in line causing it to stall

just running half tank to verify seem that may have been the issue? we shall see over the next week or so

I am having/have had this stalling at idle problem on occasion with my 07 CVT. Maybe like 5 times within 45,000 miles, but some of those times I caught it happening and was able to give it gas and work it out. The problem came around the switch to Ethanol; could be a coincidence. I say that, because the problem seemed to happen directly after a fill up. Could be an overfill problem? I also have been diligent in making certain to close the cap well with several clicks. Other times I had it happen when the humidity was extremely high (Florida).

It has been okay lately and running great getting over 28 mpg. I have switched to Chevron gas and recently used some Chevron gas treatment. I also want to change my original spark plugs with the new E3 plugs others on this site have liked.

Let us know if the dealer finds anything concrete.

stalling

We was looking at a wrangler x, had it for the weekend as we was serious buyers, but had almost the same problem, except it would do it on a take off from the light or sometimes it would just die on its own.

Once I was able to put it in neutral and throttled the gas pedal several times and kept the motor going, but the engine was running rough like starving for fuel on some of the cylinders, or like it was only running on a couple of cylinders. but no codes thrown really weird. we took it back to the dealer and asked them to check it out they couldn't duplicate it and no codes so no problem to them. needless to say no thanks.

Checking on the wrangler forums we found that some people experiencing the same problem, we almost got rear-ended due to this. some think its the drive by wire system others thought it was the traction control system,

we have since moved on looking at other vehicles as we also found other issues that was annoying.

my suggestion, take it back to the dealer its an unsafe condition that needs attention.

I had something weird happen this morning.

I was backing out of my driveway, and just started to back up, When I realized that I had forgoten something. I stopped to go back in the house and the Patriot stalled out instantly. I restarted it and everything was fine after that.

It was only 3°F when i left so maybe that had something to do with it. Also there was some snow and i may have activated the ESP when I backed up for the brief second.

In both previous Chrysler vehicles that I had this problem in it was the wiring harness. In one of the vehicles they had to replace it twice. I'm not sure if it's the same problem or not but it sounds like it. One thing I remember is that all of the dash lights would come on when it did it. Either way it's not normal and I would def take it in for service before it causes an accident. Luckily every time it happened to me it was normally when pulling out of parking lots or from home and never happened in traffic.

A friend's Grand Cherokee had the same problem a couple years ago. He had it checked, but never solved. It happend to me once, a few weeks ago, but that was it. I'm not sure if it idled on its own or I did something wrong. The fact is that it never happened again.

i had the same issues withit stalling ramdomly , but would start right back up

so took it to dealer (only 9000k) they asked me if , when i fill up with fulel do i try to top it off , well YES i do such a small fuel tank i want the most fuel i can get . well they told me that by topping the tank it causes some issue with thte return fuel from the engine ? i didnt belive them at all , so i tried it for last few months now NOT topping off the tank to the max , and long behold i havent had a single stall !
so if your having a issue with it randomly stalling , try not filling the tank all the way up and see if it helps , it did for me . have not had one single issue since then

Engine stalling at random or not starting

I have a 2007 Sport with the 2.4L , manual trans, and I experienced the same problem. It would either just not start (would crank) or randomly stall, even while driving it! Yipes! What was common, if I raised the hood, tapped around the relay box, it would start. Hmmmmm.
What I found is under the fuse/relay box mounted on the drivers side fender well (under the hood), one of the connections on this box had worked its way loose from the bottom. You have to remove the box and check all the snap-connections under neath. Since then I have not had one issue and it used to happen on a monthly basis, especially when it was really damp out.
Hope this helps.

I had my 08 Patriot (4,800 miles) stall when turning right from a stop light. 5-speed manual. It started running rough, I kicked the clutch in and tried to feather the gas pedal to no avail. It started again and ran fine. I've also noticed that it sometimes feels as if there is a 'stumble' under 2,000 RPM, even when at highway speeds. Intermittent issue.

Ya, it was on the Liberty and Wranglers, the TPMS (If I recall) would think the key was in the off position if it sensed an error, they upped the time allowed before it would think the key was off to fix the issue. I mentioned it to the Dealer, but they said it'd be more widespread.

I've only encountered less than 10 people with the issue. I've filed 2 NHTSA reports due to the chance of an accident occurring. If I pass a car legally on a 2 lane road and it dies on me, I'm dead. I actually refuse to pass cars because of this concern. I know that can happen at anytime with any vehicle but my Patriot does it almost every other day and it usually does it in spurts like 5-10 times in a short distance of travel.
