I have always felt that a car with a sticker is a faster car or at least feels that way. No matter what engine. With that said a 4 cylinder needs a manual in order to not feel sluggish. A v6 doesn't nor a v8. When I bought my 2013 4x4 5spd new they had to ship it in from up north. They r rare. The patriot with 4x4 and the manual feels like a "real" jeep to me. It gives it a truck like rugged feel. If it weren't for the patriot I would still be driving a 2010 accent hatch with stick. Which was a very nice and fun car but i needed more room for my kids at the time. I could have made do but I thought for less than 20k I could get a new 4x4 that can actually carry quite a bit up the mountain!

UPDATE

Update for anyone that cares. A few weeks ago I drove a co-workers 2008 Patriot with 2.4L 4x2 and CVT. It surprised me in the fact that it wasn't terrible! I thought it was pretty smooth and not sluggish at all. I guess there is a slight delay when you put your foot down hard, but nothing I would call sluggish. I wonder if most auto critics smoke crack before they do reviews. It still has the droning sound though, but overall it was good! However, I would take my 5 speed over any CVT any day of the week of course!!!

I may no longer drive a stick but I still have the tendencies to keep my hand on the shift lever. Used to drive stick for years back when I first got my license. I learned on my mom's 84 T-bird turbo coupe. Sometimes I would like to have a 5 spd but then I get offroad and realize I like the auto 6 spd better.

2014 2.4L Sport, FWD 5 Speed Manual, 24K Minnesota miles. RPM momentary climbs when off gas to shift (throttle lag) biggest complaint for me. Opened a ticket with Jeep but still won't resolve. I've learned to drive the Jeep the way it's tuned vs. me pushing it to be what it isn't.

First gear is weird.. sometimes i barely need to give it gas... sometimes i need to put 1500rpm but still isnt smooth taking off... sometimes you need to go fast from stop and i dont want to ruin the clutch... how many rpm do you guys put it at before releasing the clutch

I thought what you are referring to is momentum of the engine. For a brief moment after the clutch is released the rpms will go up slightly because it will still have momentum to push eventhough nothing is connected.

I own both. Our 2008 has the CVT and our 2014 the 5-spd.

Agreed manuals are more fun to drive, and compared to a conventional automatic they are better in snow and for mpg.

I've had a bunch of manuals in the past:
  • 1960 Ford Falcon with 3-on-the-tree.
  • 1977 Volare with 3-on-the-floor(!) -- basically a 4-spd w/out 3rd gear.
  • 1984 Plymouth Turismo with 5-spd.
  • 1993 Cherokee -- shifted harsh and the clutch was a constant problem. Bought it new; dumped it after 6 months.
  • 1988, 1994, 2004, 2011 Wranglers. The 2011 has a 6-spd which is a couple more gears than it really needs.

IMHO, the CVT with autostick is the best of both worlds, though the lower ranges seem rather useless for my purposes. Maybe for downshifting?

I'm 58 and have driven lots of manuals. Habit is clutch, gas, shift all in one motion. On the Jeep, engine RPM climbs briefly from where it was a few hundred before starting to come down while your shifting. Best remedy is to let off gas first, then clutch/shift. The Jeep is much happier.

Sorry for the multiple replies, still learning this site's format.

Had an 07 FD1 5 speed and loved it. Looking to get back into a Patriot, but wanting an FD2 this time. Wish they at leas offered the extra ground clarance and skid plates with the FD1.
Ground clearance on post 2010 4x4 patriots is the same regardless of FDI or FDII. You get half an inch from the springs and half an inch from the wrangler SR-A tires over the FWD patriot.

Skid plates are an easy and actually pretty inexpensive after market add on.

If you plan on taking it off road, get the FDII for the other things that cannot be added, such as the hill decent control, lower gearing, and more aggressive BLDs.

clutch shudder at 60k ( kilometers)

The other day we got a blast of winter here in Calgary. I noticed my clutch chattering as it reached the end of travel.(the clutch pedal was almost all the way out) I called the dealer who said $2200.00 for a new clutch , but then said it could be ice build up on the clutch disc, or glazed. Well a Chinook blew in raising the temp to above freezing and my clutch is working properly again.

I own a '16 sport 4x4. I opted for the manual because I live in the mountains along the East Coast. I tell you what, this Jeep is a beast in the snow. The added control of the stick is perfect for my location, and it's one of the smoothest manuals I've ever driven.

This could also be moisture in the brake/clutch fluid reservoir. Bleeding the clutch slave with fresh fluid may help.
