Just wondering if anyone here has ever used either the basic crossrails or any other kind of specialty crossrails specifically for a canoe or kayak? I noticed that even at their widest spread the distance between the front and back rail isn't very big so I'm wondering if it would even work to transport a 12 foot canoe on top of a pat.

Anyone done it before?

thanks

I was unable to strap my canoe to the factory cross rails. The canoe itself was actually wider than the rails were. Luckily I found a local guy who had purchased the mopar sport utility rails and was looking to trade for the basic ones.

The standard factory cross bars are arched slightly and sit between the roof rails

The aftermarket (Thule, Yakima) rails are flat, and wider too because they sit on top of the roof rails.

There is a Mopar Canoe carrier kit, P/N 82204700. I've never seen it in person so I can't comment on its fitment.

I just looked up the mopar kit. All it contains is a some brackets and straps. It does NOT include any cross bars so I guess is uses the factory bars.

Works ok with the mopar sport utility bars. I only used my canoe a couple times last summer, but it worked. Two straps over the canoe at the crossbars are plenty, but I bought a pair of top ties (http://www.redrockstore.com/Catalog/index.php?crn=97&rn=773&action=show_detail) to secure the front. I'm not sure how much they actually do, but they make me feel better. This spring I'll get a trailer hitch with a shackle for the rear.

I bought and assembled a canoe trailer for my Old Town Predator canoe which I wanted to carry on top of my previous Jeep Liberty (canoe was 16' and 40" wide and built for hunting). And my Thule bars were wider but still it wouldn't fit due to mounting hardware, etc.

using truck extender

I personally use a product called a truck extender, it mounts in your trailer hitch and extends out 3 feet, and is ajustable in height. It makes loading and unloading the canoe alot easier, especially when doing it alone. Just slide the canoe in and out of the rear of the pat. This product can be found at Harbor Freight.
