Today I discovered (while driving in our valley's "Tule fog") I noticed my RH low beam light was out--this is THE FIRST bulb I've had to replace in 100,000 miles.

Any tips on which bulb upgrade I should pursue--and is there a trick/easy way to get to the bulb?

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

I run sylvania ultra-stars, I hear alot of hate about them all over the internet. Never had any issues in the last 4 vehicles I put them in. Way brighter than stock. More of a bright white than the stock yellowish. not blue by any means though.

I've had the Phillips Extremes in for 2 months and I love them!! They are definately brighter than stock but where you will really notice them is in distance as they project further down the road. I got them thru Amazon:

Always replace bulbs in pairs as well...the difference between a new bulb on one side and the older bulb on the other is huge.

even in tail lights. They dim over time, so don't just do the one side.

I have never tested the different grades of halogen light bulbs because I tend to be satisfied with the long life OEM type.

I have researched the interweb about them and there seems to be some common "ideas" about them:

While the high performance lights are whiter regarding their Kelvin rating, their actual brightness improvement is no where near the marketing claims. This is borne out in the Consumer Report Test (I know, CR sucks...): http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2013/01/halogen-headlight-bulbs/index.htm

"We found that the premium bulbs, as a group, deliver a whiter light and up to 19 percent more output than the standard or OE bulbs, and that can be more pleasing for drivers. But none of the premium bulbs allowed us to see farther on our headlight test course than the standard or OE bulbs."

From what I've "read" the high performance bulbs begin to get dimmer sooner than the standard bulbs AND their life expectancy is MUCH less. Look at this Sylvania chart for our 9008/H13 bulbs. Notice that lumens is the same for all bulbs, Kelvin color is different, and life expectancy is dramatically different.

https://www.sylvania.com/en-us/appl...lications/automotive-lighting-systems/Pages/lrgproductspecs.aspx?partnumber=H13

It's my OPINION that the marketing of the high performance bulbs is misleading. I've decided that to go any higher than one step above the standard bulb is not needed (for me).....again, just my opinion. In the US we're free to make our own choices (some of the time).

Finally, Sylvania recently settled a $30 million class action lawsuit regarding it's over-hyped headlight bulb claims: http://legalnewsline.com/issues/cla...class-action/252043-sylvania-agrees-to-30m-settlement-in-headlight-class-action

Agree with the fella above, anything over OEM is going to give less light but better color and always less life. I'll 100% agree about Sylvania and their false claims, the last time I bought their product was 2 sets of Silver Stars on my wifes Mazda which burnt our within 6 months of each other.

I just upgraded my HID's on my Tiburon Mr. Jack due to them starting to fade in color (still worked perfectly fine). I installed them originally 8 years and 9 months prior from upgrading them in December. You will never get the light output/color of halogens that you can out of HID's and you will never get the same life as stated above at nearly 9 years and 194,000 miles. And all of this at $29.99 shipped for the set.

Phillips extreme power is going to give more light over stock. I ran them in my 2008 patriot and you don't get the white look, but the light is noticeably brighter in output.

I even ran 80w/100w (low/high) beams on my old patriot and that was bright although you risk cooking the housing.

Stick with Philips extreme power if you want the absolutely brightest and most useable light output

My sylvania gave me way more light than my stockers. As much as they claim? No, but thats to be expected. Everyone knows yello light travels further, but even them being white the road is lit up so much more than oem. When I worked for a company that required me to drive on a highway at night 4 times a week, every week i had them install sylvanias on the work van and it made nighttime highway driving much better for me.

If you drive lots at night, get some auxiliary driving lights............like a huge lightbar then your headlights become irrelevant. But of course only when the high beams are on and no one is around =)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I went with SYLVANIA H13 SilverStar zXe High Performance Halogen Headlight Bulb, (Pack of 2) via Amazon with next day delivery. Watch this space at 3:30 PM tomorrow for an update!

Hope they last longer than 6 months Mr. Jack, good luck.

I always buy my bulbs in pairs,
and what i do is save the 1 good bulb, so when a bulb goes out still have it to use.
personally have not seen that much of a difference to justify the prices of some of these bulbs
last set i bought i think sylvastar paid like $45 for 2,(ridiculous prices to me)
see no difference in those compared to stock or $20 pair

No kidding which is why I pay $30 or less for an HID kit that will last 10 years. Never have to screw around with changing bulbs 1-2 times a year and always at the worst times (like -10 degrees)!

Bulbs arrived! Installed, now need to wait until dark to test. Package says bulbs are guaranteed to last 1 year. My cost just less than $30 delivered.

As I said, wish you luck on these next 12 months. For me it was about 6 months so in nearly 9 years with those bulbs I would have paid $30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30+$30= $540 and the time changing those 18 sets of halogen bulbs.

You can rest assured that my replacement of these--provided they outlast the warranty, will be OEM ones. My two local parts stores didn't have ANY H13s in stock, so overnight with Amazon was next best.
