I was talking to my dealer who was using a fancy custom OBD2 port interface tool on my car the other day and he said that these were all obsolete. They were too expensive and all the new units would just be off the shelf lap tops.

I have the interface cable that came with the scangauge, which is a basic network cable.

What software do I need to be able to talk to my Patriot and where can I get it?

Good question.

Any possibility you might just be able to plug the laptop in and the Patriot computer would have the software to autorun?

You will need to find software to communicate with the computer and make sure your cable has the correct pinouts. If it's RJ-45 then you wll probably have to convert to serial or usb to work with any software. If you search there are some open source software options that can give you basic OBD II info. For more manufacture specific info, you will need to find Chrysler specific software. For some manufactures (like Subaru and VW) there are free or fairly low cost software option that allow you full access to the ecu for tuning and etc.

WIth a quick search I found this option.

What are you trying to do?

I work with CAN for my job and have tools to read the bus traffic through the OBDII port in the driver's footwell. It doesn't work in my Compass. We have a Caliber at work that I know other people have working. I talked with them and found out you have to tap into the bus somewhere else as the OBDII port is blocked from normal bus traffic.

The first thing I want to be able to change my self is tire diameter. After that I want to be able to play with power door lock programming and tuning the engine to favor fuel economy over increased performance. If I find factory options in the junk yard later, I want to be able to add them and tell the computer they are there so they work.

I fool around with my carburetors and timing constantly on the old cars and I want the same ability with the new one.

Don´t you worry about the fact that you could damage your Patriot if you tweak the computer settings? I mean the Patriot doesn´t come with the Reset button option.
