It might also just be a matter of timing. The computer is going to average out what it sees in your driving style. If you can manage to perform a reset before you have a lot of freeway driving planned (road trip!), you'll bias it toward that driving style, and it'll take longer to average it out w/ your city driving. It'll still try to find the average between city/highway, but if you can manage this, you'll carry the highway average a little longer.
Whn resetting the cpu the cpu uses 40 engine cycles to reprogram the cpu.
So resetting it just before a trip won't affect much

Well, resetting it before a trip will do the following:

1) Set is back to the initial factory tune
2) Begin programming the computer for your driving style (assuming that long trips are going to be your norm - wouldn't do much good for a day trip).

The payoff would be in the long-term, after your 40 cycles have run and the computer sees your driving habits (be they frequent long trips, or frequent short ones, or whatever).

Here's a question.... My Pat is sitting at a little over 700 miles on the ODO and the first two tanks of gas averaged out at 24MPG. How big of an impact does having a new engine have on mileage in these beasts? Once the engine is broken in will that have an effect on the MPGs?

Most of us saw an improvement after the first oil change.
A lot of us saw further improvement as we got used to, what was for most, a brand new type of transmission and Jeep programming.

Mine started out OK and got better and better.

it's with the ignition off. In the caliber forum it stated to turn the vehicle off, then wait for an hour. IMO if you have to wait an hour anyway, I would just disconnect the battery and know for a fact that it reset the ecu, then just take a couple minutes to re-apply my stereo settings.

Not to bump an older thread, but,

I preformed the ECU Reset right after changing the plugs so I can't attribute the lack of a shudder during acceleration to either one directly. Fuel economy seems to be the same, however acceleration is greatly improved...

Having the 'Riot relearn my driving style rather than a combination of the previous owner and my driving style has probably helped.

Shuttering should of came from the plugs that's what fixed mine. Did a ecu reset the other day because I was getting 23mpg highway.

Mine was something with the CVT. The plugs I pulled out all looked worn, but still serviceable. I had decided to change them mainly due to crossing 100,000 miles.

Does anyone know if this works with a Patriot?

Jeep Electronic Control Unit Reset
When installing new power or performance accessories how does the computer for the Jeep know that it has a new accessory? Most of the time the computer does not. The computer would need to be reset to take full potential of the performance accessories you have added.

The Electronic Control Module, or ECU as its commonly called, stores the information for your vehicle and your driving habits in its memory. The memory is maintaned by a series of capacitors that hold a charge and maintain power for the ECU when the vehicle is turned off. The following procedure will allow you to reset the memory and allow the computer to 're-learn' how to drive by adjusting to the drivers habits and the vehicles modifications.

1. Disconnect the battery by removing the positive battery cable. Remember, the positive battery cable.

2. Ground the positive cable to the negative cable for 30 seconds to erase the electric charge in the capacitors.

3. Reconnect the positive cable to the battery.

4. Turn the key to on but do not start.

5. Turn the headlights on.

6. Turn the headlights off.

7. Turn the key off.

The ECU has now been reset to its factory settings. For the next 50 warm-up periods the ECU will re-learn the engine and driving habits for your driving conditions and the newly installed parts.

that looks like its straight from the avenger forum. I did it. Worked marvelously on my patriot. It's previous owner lived in a flat city, I live in a hilly town. Made a huge improvement on acceleration.

Does anyone know if the procedure above ^^^^ resets your trip odometers and oil life monitor?
I wouldn't mind trying this for $hits and giggles, but not if it resets the oil life monitor.....
I could write down the trip odo's so that's not a big deal. I know for certain that pulling the battery cable of a FORD vehicle DOES reset the trip odo....
