I'm guessing the people that buy Jeep Patriots and use the ESP button are rare, and the people that want to hold down the ESP button for 10 seconds to disable it are rarer still.
How many Patriot owners in the wild even drive gravel, much less off road?
I disable it fully at least twice a month to go offroad, and drive rough ungraded gravel mountain roads every weekend in the summer.

The TSB, #05-004-08, states that it affects all 4X4 MKs (Patriot and Compass) equipped with ESP, built before June 20th, 2008.

Fixed.

I went to my dealer today and I showed to him the PDF that I printed from this forum.

He flashed my Patriot without any issues.

Now it works ! I can hear a chime and "ESP FULLOFF" is displayed in the odometer.

Thank you very much !

My Dealership went ahead and did it without me having to try and prove it to them. I told them the issue, and they searched it out and found the TSB. Now if they would stop making excuses why they aren't fixing the knock in my front end :| Brought it in twice for it, both times nothing fixed. The Gas Evap Canister is toast on it, so they ordered it, will be bringing my knock problem to the attention of the service manager.

I take mine off road all the time here in Idaho. I like the ESP Full Off feature. When you are going up a steep hill, and the wheels start to lose traction, ESP kicks in and cuts power to those wheels, which makes it almost impossible to get up the hill.
YOU DON'T NEED FULL OFF MODE TO PREVENT ENGINE TORQUE REDUCTION!!!!

Read the owners manual as it clearly states...

Owners Manual said:
PARTIAL ESP
This mode is entered by momentarily depressing the “ESP Control Switch”. When in “Partial Off” mode, the TCS portion of ESP, except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS section, has been disabled and the “ESP/TCS Indicator Light” will be illuminated. All other stability features of ESP function normally, with the exception of engine power reduction. This mode is intended to be used if the vehicle is in deep snow, sand or gravel conditions and more wheel spin than ESP would normally allow is required to gain traction.

In the Partial ESP mode, the engine torque reduction and stability features are desensitized. Therefore, the enhanced vehicle stability offered by ESP is unavailable.

NOTE: To improve the vehicle’s traction when driving with snow chains, or starting off in deep snow, sand or gravel, it may be desirable to switch to the “Partial Off” mode by pressing the ESP switch. Once the situation requiring ESP to be switched to the “Partial Off” mode is overcome, turn ESP back on by momentarily depressing the “ESP Control Switch”. This may be done while the vehicle is in motion.
And this applies and can be useful for 2WD Patriots as well.

ESP full off disables the stability control portion that correlates steering wheel angle to yaw rate and lateral acceleration. Basically, if you want to slide or drift the car, use full off. Otherwise, partial is all most people need for on and off-road driving.

Actually, Apt, it states:

Desensitized is not turned off.

Just checked mine out and alas it will need to be repaired. Since deep snow is hopefully coming, this will be a needed fix.

....goes back into the shop on Tuesday. (knowing this dealership, I think I'll print out the TSB and put it on the dash for them.)

Apparently, this FIX is still not available in Europe. My dealer said that they can not download the update for my VIN and said that since the fix was announced on 30/10, it is not still updated with all Euro VINs. Anybody from Europe did this fix?????

kdx,

nice signature.

I got mine fixed. No Problems. Here's what it looks like now...

Well, I was out playing around in a canyon about five miles out of town today. I have been there many times before, and it really fun to drive my Pat around there.

My Pat has FDI.

There was a hill that I just couldn't climb. I tried twice before, and I'd get about 2/3 of the way up it. Then I would hit really loose dirt, and the ESP only being in partial off mode, would sense the front wheels starting to spin and take power away from them. It was really frustrating.
So, I was there again today doing some shooting, and decided to see if I could go up the hill, since I had performed the ESP full off TSB on my Pat about a week ago.
I turn the ESP full off, engage 4WD, put the CVT in 1, and start up the hill. I get to the part where I normally can't go any higher, and I hear my front tires spin just a little bit, grab, and up the hill I go.
I just wanted to see if the TSB had made a real difference, and low and behold, it actually does turn the ESP completely off, allowing wheel spin to occur. I was really happy to finally make it up that hill.

Got the flash and now all is as the manual says it should be....here is hoping that it does not screw something else up. Oddly they say they have not had any complaints on this problem there. I know I have asked twice myself before about it. wondering if nobody else around my area noticed the problem. im sure im not the only one that had the issue in the city , there a growing number of patriots now.
I'd be willing to bet few owners will ever discover there is a problem. Just us car nuts that read the manual and insist that the car works exactly as it is supposed to. Instead they will find themselves in deep snow or loose sand and just get mad. Then they will shoot off their mouths about what a lousy car the Jeep Patriot is.

Idaho, Did you have 4WD locked in partial as well or just kept it in AWD?

I had it locked.

Yes car nuts,:pepper::D:banana: and it's amazing to see how much assurance and knowledge this site brings.

Yes! Chrysler wasn't going to let me know there was a TSB issued. I got mine fixed today!!!1:smiley_thumbs_up:

I was talking to my wife about ESP off. Remembering she is used to driving a CJ where it is either in 4x4 or not. She had no idea about turning off the ESP if she was stuck. Jeep needs to make how to use this ESP off feature more obvious. Most people think "Jeep" means they can just drive through anything. If you put it in 4x4 that should be good enough.......right? ;)
