In the last month or so my 2010 pat with 120,000 KM on it started making a whirring noise when accelerating. It gets a little louder the higher the rpm. It quiets a bit when you shift up and louder as the rpm goes up on the next gear. If the clutch is pressed and you rev or the car is in neutral and rev no noise. I had the tranny fluid changed at 100,000 km. Original clutch which maybe slips a little.

What do you think it could be or I should check?

I've recently done both front lower control arms with ball joints, tie rods inner and outer and it just had an alignment done.

Thanks!

Me, too!

When you get it figured out, let me know, please! How loud is it when you are going slow, say under 25mph? Also, does the sound pulse when your driving. The best way I could describe the noise is if there was a burr on a gear that was catching every time it went around-does that make sense?

Its a constant whirr above about 2000 rpm only under load. Its gets a little louder as the rpm goes up. I think I'm going to check the tranny fluid level. If someone could post a decent doc with pics that would be appreciated. There was one linked on this site but most of the pics are gone now.

Other than that my other thought is the clutch needs to be replaced. Beyond that the tranny itself but I'm at a loss in there.

The fluid level check plug is on top left side of differential (1)

Fluid level should be no more than 3/16" below bottom of hole on level ground.

I hate to say it but it sounds a lot like a failing bearing in the trans. I've pulled a few other makes with the same sound and symptoms, usually the input shaft or differential support bearing is on the way out.

Thanks for the info. I think I may be on the right track now. Its started doing it at even lower rpm or at least more noticeable today now that I'm tuned into it more. At idle in neutral there is a very quiet muffled fast knocking noise. When I push down the clutch it disappears. Am I correct in believing it's almost definitely the clutch now or does that point to the input shaft or something else?

Thanks!

Disengaging the clutch stops input shaft rotation in the trans. If it was the clutch throwout bearing, it would get noisier when depressed as this loads that bearing up. Regardless, it may require dropping the trans to get a better look.

Make sure you take it to a trustworthy and competent shop. If it actually is the input bearing, according to the FSM it can be replaced without splitting the trans case.

See, on my Patriot, the noise disappears when I depress the clutch pedal. Jeep mech said it was my throw out bearing and replaced. Noise still there! Now says there is nothing wrong with the Pat. Well, actually there is. I'm hoping, unlike you, Dub, that the tranny goes within the warranty time. My noise is like when I was kid I'd put baseball cards on my bike fender, attached by clothespins, so that they'd slap on my wheel spokes as the tire spins. The faster I go the louder the whir!!

I ordered the clutch kit today online. I phoned around and everyone local wants $500 for it. I got it for 240 shipped for a LUK kit. I figure if they pull it apart I may as well do that too. Maybe I'll get lucky and that's all it is.

I'm too busy the next couple weeks to take it in. Hopefully nothing bad happens between now and then although it sounds like some have been living with this noise for a very long time.

I will post back with the outcome. Thanks for your help everyone.

Front Transaxle it was for us.

We had a whining noise coming from 2009 when under load...ended up being the front transaxle...they removed it and rebuilt it...new bearings, syncro, etc...new insides. All covered under the PowerTrain warranty.

I have this same problem now with my jeep. A jeep dealership diagnosed it with bad throw out bearing but i had the whole clutch fixed and the noise is still there. My friend works at AAMCO and said it sounded like a bearing inside the tranny on the driver side. Any help would be nice since I've already had my jeep sitting for a week.

So I have a 2017 jeep patriot manual 2.0 since new and in the past year I’ve had the clutch replaced and now the input shaft bearings replaced. No problems shifting or warning lights and still has the whining noise the more I accurate the louder it gets.
