I just filled up my first gas tank drove it until it was empty. I only got 400Km out from my patriot 2.0L 4x2.

Read the previous posts in the forums. It takes about 500-600 miles (750-900km?) for the system to "learn" and adjust to your driving. Vary your driving as much as you can by mixing city and highway as possible and don't use the cruise control during that period.

Mileage also drops off significantly in cold weather. With just over 10,000miles I have a long run average of about 28mpg. Short run, with the cold weather we are having it's about 25-26mpg. In warm weather I get about 29-31mpg. That's right in the ball park for the estimates. Maybe a hair over, but the estimates are just averages.

Yes, the onboard computer is *listening* to your driving habits (% street and highway - acceleration rate, sustained speed, frequency of events). On the fly it starts adjusting timing and mixture to suit. It will take up to 1000km to determine your average driving style and adjust to suit.

Some folks have faired better than the stated numbers while others have had poorer results. No doubt about it though, if you drive fast, expect poor mileage. Remember, the Patriot is about as aerodynamic as a cube van.

Please don't tease us despite the temptation. Many of us here would trade our petrol Patriots tomorrow if we were able to get a CRD- but we cannot and it looks like there will not be that option here in the forseeable future

what is CRD ... i'm too lazy to google for the info.

btw, its been snowing a lot these days in Toronto and it could affect my gas milege but since i got my patriot i have been keeping it under 2000 rpm and take good care of her. I really hope this car saves gas ... prices are $1.08/Litre today. :(

Tasar:

Diesel is around 1.20 per litre here - catching up. regular petrol is 1.10 (CAN$ =us $)

I have had my patriot for 16,000km, and only once I have been able to hit 400km on a tank of gas.

I do 80% highway driving, and drive until the light comes on everytime.

Yes, the aerodynamics of the Patriot are that of a brick, but the motor is small powerless. It seems to drink too much gas to me.

My 2004 BMW 325i with an inline-6 gets much better gas mileage than the patriot, and it actually moves off the line when you hit the gas pedal!

made the mistake of purchasing a patriot then coming to this forum. I thought the Jeep was a gas saver according to the eco auto rebate program, thats why I purchased this car. other than the gas milege, I REALLY REALLY LOVE MY JEEP.

I got 25.5 MPG on my first tank on gas. FD1, 4x4, 5 speed. That was a mixture of city and highway driving in hilly country in 20 degree weather. Which is what? about -8 centigrade for those of you not in the USA. My second tank went down to 24.5 with more city driving.

I find the wild fluctuation in what people are getting for mileage very interesting.

In many weeks of following this and other forums I have never seen this before. Are you saying that by using "6th" in autostick you can actually reduce RPM and hence increase mileage? How much data do you have to support this? It seems that you could have made a major breakthrough- I cannot wait to try for myself!!

I have the 2.4l CVT 4x4 and find that I can get at least 400k in the city and 500k or so on the hwy. I have found that once the light comes on I can still get about 40 -50k and a fill up takes about 50l at that point. I am quite satisfied with these numbers as I've moved from a 98 Chilkoot Pathfinder that didn't even get those numbers on nearly 80litres...I guess the MPG depends on what you compare it to.

Right on Skipper- I had a 2005 Dodge Dakota 4x4 before the patriot. It had a 80l tank and I rarely got more than 450 kms. With the Patriot I get between 400 and 460 kms and that is with a 50l tank. Moreover that is in the winter- I expect to get over 500kms in the summer on the highway. On the other hand before that I had a RAV 4 (with a 5 speed manual) and I could easily get over 500kms per tank and I believe that the tank on the RAV was slightly smaller than the Patriot.

So it greatly matters what your are comparing with.

On balance I would say that the mileage with the Patriot is pretty darn good. At 110kms per hour on the highway using Scanguage I can usually keep the consumption below 10 litres per 100 kms

3rd fillup from the same gas station and the same pump. The light did'nt go on but I got 371KM out of 41.472L.

Summary:
1st fillup: 8.88888 kms per litre
2nd fillup: 9.269 kms per litre
3rd fillup: 8.94579 kms per litre

As others have intimated here, it's all relative I guess. Wait a minute isn't incest relative? But that's another story. Though I am upset with the dinky gas tank, the gas tank mileage is about the same for both my 07 Patriot and my 98 Cherokee. The difference is one is a 50 litre tank and the other is 75 litres. The ol' 4.0 litre straight 6 is a serious guzzler.

The winter isn't helping right now either.

"using "6th" in autostick you can actually reduce RPM" , i listened and tried ......... it DOES'NT WORK. If you look at the RPM it actually increases thus taking more gas. stick to D and don't mess with the autostick. autostick is good for engine braking and starting faster at red lights ... got my autostick on second gear and reved the engine to 6 thousand RPM ... then to 3rd gear and was at 120KM before I knew it, reminds me of driving manual in the old days ... AUTOSTICK IS SOOO COOL.

You just don't know what you're doing. Easier to say that than to say it doesn't work. A quote right from a thread on this board you didn't bother to search. read the whole thread there is lots of info in there.

" 4.) 2008 Autosticks can improve city (low-speed) MPG by shifting manually...sometimes.
For hill climbing, there appears to be little difference between CVT automatic and shifting manually using Autostick. However, on FLAT roads where you're maintaining a constant speed (such as when traffic lights lights are timed at 20 or 25mph), you will see a nice improvement in MPG by using your Autostick. Shifting into "5" as soon as possible after reaching 18 mph will increase MPG on flat roads. Same goes for shifting into "6" at 23mph. Reasoning here is to keep engine RPMs and fuel consumption at lowest possible level. Shift back into "D" at speeds above 40mph, as most efficient highway speed drive gear on CVT is not accessible with Autostick. Also, if you intend to reach highway cruising speeds, a standard acceleration using CVT programming is probably preferable as it gets you to cruising speed quicker."

you must be running the tank dry. The specs say its a 51 L tank. Plus, I have found that I am getting better mileage during the past month mainly due to the warmer weather. But I am not getting near what you are getting. I now average 43L and go a distance of 430KM.
