Ok... So I saw zbee's thread regarding the upgrading of the MyGig NAV units. I started reading over the thread he linked and realizes that there have been many upgrades to the MyGig system itself.

I looked to see how updated my REN unit was and I was surprised. I bought my Jeep in April '09 and saw that the latest release on the operating software was March '09. Hmmm... I should be golden then, right? WRONG! My Jeep was sold in April '09 but was manufactured in late October. Hmmm... just one upgrade old, right? WRONG AGAIN! My headunit was manufactured back in Feb. '08 and was something like 3-4 upgrades behind. So, I started reading and a few things caught my eye. Upgrades not only fixed some issues I have found in my setup, but for example I saw upgrades dealing with the cell phone compatibility issue some of you have expressed in the past. Soooo... I decided to try out the upgrading on my own. Guess what? IT WORKED PERFECTLY! There are some point to be very careful about but it really isn't all that much of a deal.

Therefore I have decided to put together a write up for you all. I searched our forum here and I saw nothing on procedures on doing this. Well, here it is. So, without further a do, heeeeeeeerrrrrreeeessssss Kah's write up!

DISCLAIMER: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. READ AND RE-READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND A PROCEDURE, ASK AND I WILL ANSWER YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IF YOU SKIP A STEP YOU MAY HAVE A FAILURE IN UPGRADING AND IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO HAVE THE DEALER RE-INSTALL EVERYTHING.

Ok... before we get to the nitty gritty of things, here are some observations you need to be aware of.

  • None of this information is of my authoring. It is all information I have found on a couple of sites and I have decided to put together here. I have tested the procedures and have sucessfully installed the MyGig software update as well as the Gracenote update.
  • The intent of this thread is solely on updating the MyGig headunit system. I am not discussing on swapping of other headunits to MyGig units here.
  • MyGig software update is done on a CD-R or similar (On-Screen Interface and Operating System).
  • Gracenote update is done on a DVD-R or similar (music database, etc.).
  • Burning CD's or DVD's should be done at the lowest possible speed which is usually 2x. Trying to burn at higher speeds will more often than not cause a "Invalid Media" type message to appear when you attempt to update.
  • If you are going to do both updates do the MyGig software FIRST and follow up with the Gracenote update SECOND.
  • Do NOT turn off your radio, turn off your car, turn off your ignition, or start your car while the update is in progress.
  • Do NOT remove the CD until after you click No on the "Update from 1.220 to 1.220" screen. (Explained further in the below instructions/photos)
  • WARNING! - Your radio will fail after installation and you will have to bring it to the dealer for repair if you don't follow the 2 above observations!

DOWNLOADS:

As far as I have read and determined, you only need to install the "latest" update. I will only link to the latest update file I can find and periodically update the available file accordingly. It is NOT necessary to download any intermediate update files. Below you will have a link that should start you off on your download. Look for your unit and download. If you are unsure as to which unit you have, look at the face of the headunit and on the bottom right hand corner (under the AUX input jack) you should see three letters corresponding to the files that follow. These are zip files so make sure you have a decompressing utility on your computer.

  • RER - Nav unit, US/CA/MEX (307 MB, ver. RER_1.220 - Last released version)
  • RER - Nav unit, US/CA/MEX (317 MB, ver. RER_2.042 - BETA REPORTED WITH BUG)
  • REN - Non-Nav unit, US/CA/MEX (171 MB, ver. REN_9.292)
  • REP - Nav unit, Non-US, AU/ZA/ME (141 MB, ver. REP_9.303 - Last released version)
  • REP - Nav unit, Non-US, AU/ZA/ME (317 MB, ver. REP_2.042 - BETA REPORTED WITH BUG)
  • REZ - Non-Nav unit, Non-US, AU/ZA/ME (171 MB, ver. REN_9.292) - Uses the REN update.
  • REW - Nav unit, Non-US, EU (307 MB, ver. RER_1.220 - Uses the RER update)
  • REW - Nav unit, Non-US, EU (317 MB, ver. RER_2.042 - BETA REPORTED WITH BUG)
  • REU - Nav unit, Chrysler Journey - NO UPDATE AVAILABLE YET.

CAUTION: UPDATE VERSION 2.042 IS A BETA UPDATE AND SHOULD NOT BE USED BY THOSE WHO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE RUNNING BETA VERSIONS OF SOFTWARE.

MyGig Software Update Instructions:

For the sake of this example, let's assume we have a XXX unit. That means we will be downloading a XXX_9.561 version. Unzip the files to your computers hard drive and burn them to a CD data disc. I suggest you download CD/DVD burning software since the Windows burning software proved to be unreliable for me. It is recommended to use the "Nero Express" software which can be freely downloaded. Most people have a working knowledge of Unzipping files and burning CD/DVD's but, if not, you can find the necessary steps to do so here.

Burn the CD at 2x speed for maximum reliability, and disable multisession (Add files later) on your burning software.

1. For Version 9.561 - Name the CD to be XXX_9.561 (where XXX is the identifier of your headunit - REN, RER, etc.) when burning it. (Recommended)

2. Root directory MUST contain only one folder and two files:

BECKER (folder)
CD_INFO.CDI
CONFIG.CDI

Start your car (Recommended), Load the CD in your MyGIG radio and the update will automatically start once the disc is recognized. Updating will take around 15 minutes.

Click the "Yes" soft key prompt window when you see the "Update from 9.556 to 9.561" screen (old version to new version). You need to allow the update process to automatically restart the headunit. Upon re-start you will once more see the update screen except that this time it will say "Update from 9.561 to 9.561". When you see this screen (with the same version TWICE), click "No" and your CD should eject. Verify the version number by going to "Menu", "System Info". You should see the version number matching the version number you just downloaded.

To better understand this process, go through these screen shots. These screen shots match the update above from version 9.556 to version 9.561.

Ok... that's the software update. Now on to the Gracenote update. Gracenote is the database of information the MyGig uses. I believe this is where the disparity of advertised MyGig diskspace versus actual disc space comes into play. the navigation system uses up a BIG chunk of disk space foe all of the mapping features.

DOWNLOAD:

Gracenote update Instructions:

Unzip the files to your Hard drive and burn them to a DVD data disc:

When you burn the DVD it is recommended that you burn at 2x or 4x speed and make sure that multisession recording (The Add More Files Later Option)is disabled. DVD+R, DVD-R, or Dual Layer DVDs are acceptable.

1. Rename the burned disk as follows:
  • For Version 1287 (US/CA/MX) - Name the CD to GN_1287 when burning it. (Recommended)
  • For Version 882 (EU) - Name the CD to GracenoteECE882 when burning it. (Recommended)
  • For Version 883 (Rest) - Name the CD to GN883 when burning it. (Recommended)

2. The DVD Root directory MUST contain only one (1) folder and one (1) file.. The root DVD directory structure is as follows:

GNDB (Folder)
gnupdate (File)

Start your car (Recommended), Load the DVD in your MyGIG radio and the update will automatically start once the disc is recognized. Here is the install walkthrough here. The Update will take around 30 minutes.

I hope this has helped you in updating you MyGig system. Many different fixes have been implemented... some, as I stated before, of which you have mentioned in the past.

If you need help, let me know and I will try to answer your question as much as possible.

Never did find that file linked for download. It started off by stating that he had it sent to him. Let me go back and re-read... I did find confirmation on this update existing in this thread (http://www.lxforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=427) but no download. Will keep researching.

Updated the RER/REW/REP version file to 2.042

Just installed it...

I installed 2.042 on my RER. Installation was painless and problem free. As Kah said, it takes about 20 minutes. Here are some observations:

1. As alluded to by zbee, this is beta software--that has been confirmed by one of the mods over at mofv (link)--it also explains why there hasn't been an official download link. Only install if you are comfortable with the usual risks that accompany running beta software. The afore-linked post also states some bugs with this version can cause the MyGig unit to randomly reset.

2. iPod/iPhone compatibility (referring to iPod kit direct connection option, not uConnect):
• Generation 5.5 30GB iPod Video
With the previous MyGig version, it didn't work. MyGig displayed some "Initiating Comm..." message that never went away while the iPod was connected. Under v2.042, it still doesn't work.

• iPhone 3G
iPhone OS 2.X worked with the previous version of MyGig. The iPhone 3.0 update broke this compatibility and no longer worked. I had hoped MyGig v2.042 would restore functionality but it did not. The software is still in beta so I hope by the final release it will be fixed! Not holding my breath, though.

• iPhone 3G S
I had hoped that somehow my iPhone 3G S running 3.0 would work on MyGig v2.042. It did not.

3. Changes I Noticed
• Fancy new bootup screen
• After pairing my iPhone, MyGig began automatically downloading my phone book. Previously, I believe you had to manually initiate the transfer. I was never able to figure it out.
• The Nav screen now has a button that will hide the user interface. Pressing the button again brings the interface back.
• Now displays official Bluetooth logo when compatible Bluetooth phone is connected.

And of course there are other changes, of which zbee has already posted.

I used a DVD +DL with no problems. "REDUCE" the burn speed to 2x (or whatever minimum speed you have). The times I attempted on the default speed, I always had problems. Also... make sure you only show the files I mentioned in the root directory [GNDB (Folder) -and- gnupdate (File)]. Disable any "Add files later" options as well. If the process does not "close" the DVD media, it will run up to a point and either hang or you get an error message. That was my last issue until I finally was able to burn the files corectly and load onto the headunit. One last hint... load the blank DVD prior to opening the burning software. At least on my computer it is a bit picky as to when you should load the blank meadia for burning.

Last but not least... what burning utility are you using? If it worked for the MyGig updater, it should work perfectly fine for the Gracenote.

I did everthing right.. not sure why it did not see it.

I ran out and got a 50 pack of TDK DVD -R from office depot for $10

It worked... I used Nero 6.6 at 2x speed ....just burned one folder and one file
named the disk GN_1287

Twice I did the same thing with Memorex DVD +R and the radio did not read them at all.
I then tried a Sony DVD +R DL and the radio read it and was intalling then error'd on me.
That scared the pee out of me. It only installed for about 30seconds. The radio came back when i ejected the dvd and the system read Gracenotes 1287 although it was not installed right.

Anyway ... thanks for quick response Kahbrohn ... the only reason I did not buy the DL was the -R was way cheaper.

All good now

I think your right about that load media first thing... That could be the only thing I did different.... I am one of those guys that does it first then reads the directions after it does not work. LOL
Welcome to my world!

Glad it worked out for you.

Thanks for the links Kahbrohn!

BTW is there anyway of finding out the software version installed on the headunit?
Yes there is.

Follow these steps. Hit these keys/options:

- Menu (hard key on the right of the head unit)
- System Setup (touch screen)
- System Information (touch screen)

You should now see the versions installed.

HOLD OFF ON DOWNLOADING VERSION 2.042

UPDATE AS OF 7/30/09

As of 7/21/09 version 2.042 is reported to have a bug in it. This was discovered a couple of week ago and it being fixed. The new version will be 2.043. It is not really a version but rather a patch to 2.042 itself.

It is due to be released to Chrysler shortly. Once it is, Harmon will be sending it out to several users who have requested it from the manufacturer directly. The difference is that Chrysler charges for the update while the manufacturer sends it out for free.

Once it become available, I will post the new version/patch here.

If anyone needs the latest Gracenote update DVD (1287), I'd be willing to send you mine for free. It worked perfectly and now I have no use for it; feels like a waste to just toss the DVD out if someone else might need it.

I only ask that once you're done with it, you offer it back on here for others to use. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks mikejeep! :smiley_thumbs_up:

People... This is a great opportunity if you do not feel comfortable following the steps I have outlined above. Updating Gracenotes is pretty straight forward in itself and only affects the album information of whatever you record onto the hard disk. IT DOES NOT AFFECT OPERATING SYSTEM OF YOUR MYGIG UNIT.

If you take this opportunity, please continue to feel free to "re-offer" this DVD through this thread.

This is unrelated to the "music" system. It has to do with the navigational system on the MyGig headunit and is for informational purposes only. I have a REN unit (no navigation) so I can't really comment on this working or not.

If at any time you find that your navigation system is "off" track or not tracking at all, I came across this old thread that has a couple of solutions to try out first.

2.045 is now out.. I do not have the link but it is new. There is also a new update for the lockpick if you have the v3 with usb port.

I have a problem the newest version of Gracenotes is too big for a CD and I try to put it on a DVD and it wont work. What am I doing wrong??
