Hi,

I'm not a Patriot owner yet but i'm looking around, as well as Hiliux, etc..
I'm looking into the specs, and i'm abit confused.
Is the towing capacity of the Patriot really only 150kg unbraked? Its on redbook, most other cars have 750kg capcity.

I quite like the turbo deisel version as i plan to tow a small boat some weekends for light fishing. But i'm not sure if only 150kg is a typo.
Surely haveing 4 passangers alone is quite dangerous if thats the case...

Anyone can shed light on this?
Thanks.

Without the tow package, it would be 455KG, and with the tow package (oil cooler) it would be 909KG, based on converting 1000 LBs for not tow, and 2000 LBs if you have the tow package. They do recommend trailer brakes for over 1000 LBs I believe.

And that would be added to gross vehicle weight, which would include passengers. So maybe you can do more if you don't have a lot of weight in the vehicle, but I'm not sure.

What's worse is my Girlfriends POS little Toyota echo can tow 350Kgs Unbraked.
Its has a tiny 1.5L engine witrh no power and is so small that I feel cramped in the car being 6 foot 4.

I flogged the GFs car up the steepest hill around here and it would not go over 50km/h. It had no power.
Flogged my Patriot up the same hill and got to about 70km/h before I let off the throttle (its a 50km/h zone.)

Pretty pathetic that the 'riot is rated so low for towing.

Australian regulations must of changed because I swear my old Magna was rated for 750kgs unbraked, but is now only 500kgs.

I test drove a 300c 5.7 Hemi yesterday. I probably should buy that, it drove fantastic and can legally tow 3 times more then the Patriot unbraked.

I fail to see how adding an oil cooler can suddenly increase the towing capacity of a vehicle? Yes the engine oil will run cooler but thats it...it has no actual bearing on the load capacity of the chassis which along with the tow hitch actually bears the load.
Anyone care to explain?

Your hitch can handle the larger load. The oil cooler doesn't increase any physical weight restrictions.

It simply allows the engine to use the extra power necessary for the extra weight without being damaged!

Your hitch can physically handle the increased load without the oil cooler but you'll probably end up damaging your engine without.

Ahh the internet, the highway of misinformation!!! I wonder if those negative commenter would dare find a liable source, or check back on this thread. It's a car-based platform but it can handle at least as much as any small and mid size car on the road, and would you believe it the Patriot tows more than a HEMI equipped Charger (obviously those are not made for towing)!

The engineer/ U.SA. government safety rated limits:

Tongue weight (the weight resting on the hitch mount coming from trailer coupling design and how it's balanced when loading) = 90kg (200lbs) - you would press down too much on the rear and take weight off the front of the vehicle (making it unsafe to steer) when you exceed this too much, and cause extra strain on rear suspension

standard towing with out tow package = 455kg (1,000lbs)

towing with tow package = 909kg (2,000lbs)
