I love my Pat, but I quickly found out that something was missing in the trunk area : storage.

I know there's a lot of room down with the spare tire. I keep throwing things there, so the back of my Pat is pretty clean. But I was thinking about a custom-fit storage case, with a few small compartments, so I could keep all my towing accessories ordered and close enough to get them quickly when I need them.

Before starting to design my own case, I was wondering if someone has heard or done something similar ?

Want to! Thought about making multiple cases for different applications like Camping, Work, Off-roading...

I just installed a roof rack put the spare on the rack and use the spare compartment a storage. In mine i have a recovery strap, a backpack with blankets and a hoody, a roadside kit, an air-pump for tires and 2 first-aid kits and still have room. But that is how i solved my storage problems.

For now I have enough space in the spare tire's compartments, but I just want a clean way of keeping things there. I can't really put a cargo case on the roof cause I wouldn't be able to get inside the parking at work.

I'll take a look at this probably this weekend, and try to design some kind of box that would go around the spare tire, and keep things in place.

Are you thinking of some kind of canvas carry-all that'll fit within the confines of the spare tire? And if so, which spare do you have--compact or full size 16 or 17". I've always thought the jack could be mounted someplace under the hood to make more room in the tire (or, I say, is that "tyre"..) center. Most canvas/awning shops love to do custom work, and with a proto-type, who knows....

A note on safety from the Willys discussion group. (yes amazingly from me, Mr. anti Safety) If you are in an accident or roll over, anything not tied down will be whacking you in the head as you roll around in your car. A tool box can do a lot of damage in the form of blunt force trauma.

So this is a good idea, having specialized containers, and even better if they can be secured to the car in some way.

I sure wish the Pat had an external carrier for the spare. Those are damn heavy to reach in and oull out when you need to change the tire. And if the back is loaded with stuff, even worse.

I've thought of building something that would sit flat in the back, and fill the cargo space, with drawers in it, and maybe carpet the top. You could store things in there "out of sight" then, and be more organized. Maybe 5-8 inches high. I've seen those made for pick-up beds.

would love a rear mounted spare tire carrier like the wrangler has...that would be sweet!

Shoulda bought a Liberty, and that spare tire is heavy too, but even higher off the ground!

That's pretty much what I'm thinking about.

I don't have the full spare tire, so that give me a little bit more room. Since it's gonna be raining all weekend long here, I'll take the time to look at this seriously. Any suggestions are welcome!

April 2009 News Story
Police in Surrey, British Columbia, are warning people to secure their belongings while driving after a young woman was apparently killed by her laptop last month.

Heather Storey, 25, of Delta died after the small car she was driving was hit by a tow truck turning left.

When investigators looked into the incident, however, they concluded she would have survived if not for her laptop computer.

Storey was on her way out of town for work at the time of the accident and usually kept her laptop in a backpack in the backseat, according to her brother Michael Pratt.

"What we believe happened [was] that she was struck in the back of her head and neck with this laptop computer," RCMP Sgt. Roger Morrow said Wednesday morning at the Surrey detachment, east of Vancouver

"She simply didn't have it secured within the confines of her car, and ultimately it has been the instrument of her death," he said

If I watned a liberty I would have bought one. I like the pat more...

Well after about one hour of research and plans, I'm not sure that a wooden box would fit in there. It would have been nice, but the spare tire don't leave enough space to fit in a box that would have decent space in it. The wood would be too large and take to much space.

I'm now considering maybe 1 or 2 custom bags that would fill the space. It would be a lot easier to fit and to design.

I put a false floor in my Willys wagon. Of course the Willys is 4 feet from floor to roof!
However, I would think perhaps a false floor at the plane just above the storage hole on the right side would yield a nice concealed storage area.

I bought a Masterbuilt Hitch Haul www.masterbuilt.com and bought a VALLEY hitch off of Ebay..which arrived yesterday. I'll be mounting that hitch this coming week (it has a 2" receiver) and use the Hitch Haul for traveling..not much room inside the PAT with 2 dogs to haul around wherever the missus and I go. Somewhat regret not getting a larger vehicle, but at the time we were not planning on 2 dogs..one sort of adopted us about a month after I got the Pat back in July....but every time I fill the Pat up it certainly is lighter on the wallet than the Grand Caravan was when paying for fuel!!

saw this on another posting, thought it would help posting here. The concept of extra storage around the spare is great. Scroll about half way down to see spare storage on the 2011 grand cherokee. If someone can fabricate these plastic "tubs," I'd sure like to get my hands on a set.

Thanks for the link! I don't really know how to work with plastic, so I guess I'll go with a custom bag. I'll take some time to make sure everyhting is fine, and I'll try to post some pics as my project goes.
