I am getting a pop up camper trailer this summer. The trailer has electric brakes. Has anybody installed a brake controller in their Patriot? How hard was it to do? E-Trailer.com has no info on the Patriot.

Thanks.

I have a small fiberglass trailer that has electric brakes (see pic at bottom) and I have done this to my 07 Pat:

Buy a 7-blade trailer connection and brake controller installation kit from etrailers.com.
http://www.etrailer.com/Brake-Controller/etrailer/ETBC7.html
Also when you go to the web page for this, you will see a link to a video that they have. Once you watch it, you will get the idea of what you need to do.

It will come with all the wires, circuit breakers, and wire connections that you will need.

1) Mount the 7-blade wire harness to the rear (I mounted mine right to the plastic bumper)
2) Connect the black wire to a good ground (I found a bolt back there somewhere but forgot exactly what it was)
3) You will have to run 2 wires from the 7-pin wire harness, one directly to the battery and one to where you will go through the fender/firewall to the brake controller (see step 6 below). I ran mine right under the car up to the engine compartment. The wire that the kit supplies is pretty heavy duty. You will have to mount a circuit breaker that comes with the wire kit right before you connect the wire to the battery.
4) Run the yellow wire to the rear tail light reverse wire. You can remove the rear light assembly and see what wire is the reverse light and use a wire splice clip supplied in the kit
5) Mount the brake controller to your liking
6) You will then have to run a wire (also with a supplied circuit breaker) again from the battery, through the fender/firewall with the 2nd aforementioned wire as mentioned in step 3 above, to inside the Pat were the brake controller is. The one from the battery powers the brake controller and the one from the wire harness sends the electrical signal to the electric brakes on the trailer. I actually ran a wire around through the left fender. This pdf is for the optional driving lights but it will show you how to run the wires like I did through the left fender to the dash. http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82210715AE.pdf
7) This part is a little tricky: Under the dash just above the brake pedal, you will see the break light switch. There is a green wire with a brown stripe on it that is connected to the wire harness. You will have to carefully separate this wire and use the supplied wire splice clip to hook up the brake controller. This lets the brake controller know that you are pressing the brake.

If you have any further questions feel free to IM me. Sorry I have no pics. I did this project last year.

A thousand thank you's!!!!

I was wondering what made the controller do what it does. A simple splice of the brake light wiring, who'd of thought.
