Tow Hook vs. Trailer Hitch

I have a Patriot FD1 and I want to have the tow hooks installed, I am wondering if there is any issue if at the rear end I install a trailer hitch and add an adapter with a hook only when I need it. These would be the trailer hitch specs:

Receiver opening: 2" x 2"
Rating: Class III
Maximum gross trailer weight: 3,500 lbs
Maximum tongue weight: 350 lbs
Not rated for use with weight-distribution systems

Of course I wont exceed the Jeep towing capacity, i am conscious I am over-sizing here. It is not worth to spend the money on both a trailer hitch and a tow hook if the former can perform both functions.

I agree! Harbor Freight has these cheap.

loops not hooks!!!!

If that hook on the tow rope breaks then it would be a sad ending!

If you're going to use a trailer you could add a hitch to the front too, much easier to maneuver a trailer (or boat, etc) on a front hitch.

And please do not use a strap with a hook, those hooks become very dangerous if the strap ever slips off while under stress, and that does happen.

I PM'd him, asking if there was a how to on those front shackles...no answer as of yet so he may be away or busy or...

I'd like to know how he got those attached too...

And I'm in with the no hooks on a strap crowd...lots of off road parks won't even let you in if you have them, just way to dangerous.
Like Lawn Darts...

Thanks again, with these 2 specs I have from the trailer hitch I am thinking about:
Maximum gross trailer weight: 3,500 lbs
Maximum tongue weight: 350 lbs
Is this sufficient to be used as a recovery point for the patriot? The patriot weight is ~4575 Lb, what would be the minimum capacity of the winch/cable puller to do a good job? Does it make sense to go above 3,500 Lbs if that is the nominal limit that the trailer hitch will have? (safety concern here). I was thinking about a manual cable puller with 4 TON (~8000 Lb) Max capacity for this.

A good hitch that was engineered for the Patriot will be no problem. Universal hitches are sometimes poorly designed but you'll know if you got one of those when you install it. You'll see play in it and cheap hardware. In general though; Just use a shackle mount rather than just the hitch pin and you're good to go.
