Squeaky Brakes

I have been having an issue that seems to be getting progressively worse with my '08 Jeep Patriot. The brakes seem to squeak quite often. Every time I start it up and leave for work in the morning. And it has started to do it during the day as well.

I took it into the dealership and the service rep told me that apparently Jeep is using a new material for the brakes which causes them to squeak. They checked out my car and he said my brakes were almost perfect, and that the squeaking is a manufacturing issue that they can't fix.

Is this the truth?

my 07 pat jus started doing it about two thousend km ago. i know its getting cold now, but it never did it last winter. stock pads arent that good but there lasting long for me. dealer said i had 65-70% of life left on them still and iv already put 36000km on em. and i abuse the brakes, it takes quite a while for them to slow the pat down though

mine squeak and grind every morning regardless or wet or dry! i have 9500km on my 08. sucks because lately i have been prepping my fiance's 02 VW Golf every morning due to snow/cold and hers make no sounds whatsoever. i get the warm garage and she gets outside too. go figure...

Since my 07 was new, the brakes squeak in cold weather when backing up. The squeaking goes away after things warm up. The colder it is, the longer it lasts. The brakes work perfectly, and show no unusual wear, so I'm not concerned.

Mine are getting worst as well... had them since this past autumn, and was told by the dealer that several Patriots (or Compass/Calibers) have had the same problem.
Most of the winter when temps drop significantly, I don't hear as much of it. But we've had warm temps and melting snow lately, it's been significantly loud - while backing up after starting the truck up. It even does it after stopping for quick stop at the store.

Dealer told me that because of the moisture, this is normal. But it's so frickin loud it echoes through the whole neighbourhood at 5AM I am sure it wakes my neighbours up. As a long term thing, it's gonna drive me nuts. I've parked both outside and in the garage.

My Patriot does it after setting for a while during moist weather or high humidity. My 1999 Cherokee did it too but not as often and both with OEM and after market parts. I can lightly press the breaks for about 20 to 30 feet and it gos away. It is not near loud enough for my neighbors to hear unless they were out side and close to the Pat. It sounds louder in side the car than out side.

Yeah the orange stuff...the rust. Apparently they were known issues for the Liberty's too... and it's quite normal for disc brakes. As well, mostly when I back out in reverse. Otherwise, while in motion forward after startup, I do hear a bit of squeaking along with the rotation of the wheels... for perhaps a couple mins and then they disappear.

Mine started making a very slight squeak at the very end of the braking at very slow speeds. Not as I brake, but at the end of braking just a few feet from the stop point.

It's a very slight squeak and I only hear it in a defined portion of the tire rotation.. almost like SQUEAK. no sound...no sound . SQUEAK. no sound . no sound .. SQUEAK. It's a familiar squeak that big school busses make some times, only really really faint. I can only hear it with my windows closed.

If I hit the brakes hard, no squeak.

I dont know how long it's been doing this, I might have never noticed until recently.

I did recently change my tires to some very wide tires so that is suspect, but something tells me its not related.

I don't think it's mosture or temperture related.

Any ideas? Anybody else?

This has happened on my car since day one. I've told the workshop and they say they can find nothing. It's definitely something rotational because I can make the vehicle do it. All I have to do is find a quiet stretch of road and drop down to walking speed, then turn the steering wheel ever so slightly towards either side, just a degree or two will do, and there it is,skik.......skik......skik. At first I wondered if the tyre rim or something was actually contacting the bodywork, but no.

I have the brake squeal too first thing when I back out of the garage. It's just surface rust that develops overnight after driving through wet conditions. It's not a huge deal as long as you drive your jeep at least 5 days a week. This way every time you drive and use the brakes the rust comes off and won't do any major damage. If you don't do this regularly you will have problems with the disc rotor rusting out. I had a brand new s-10 and I thought I was doing the truck a favor letting it sit most of the time because I had a older car that still had life left in it. Anyway at like 12000 miles all the s-10 rotors were rusted through thus ruining the brake pads also. Folks at the brake shop told me it was because GM and other companies were using cheap steel to make the cost of the disc rotors cheaper. So if you do store your Jeep for any longer period of time I would put some type of protection over the rotors.

Mine usually squeak for the first or 2nd application after I've washed the car--or driven thru wet areas. Having lived with disc brakes since the 60's, I've come to expect it! Mercedes and VW went to a nasty looking soft material to stop the squeak, but you should see the corrosive dust that gets on your fancy wheels--I've haven't had to scrup the Patriot's wheels yet in 15 months I've had it.

Stock pads on the Jeep are ceramic, hence no nasty brake dust. The semi metallic pads on the other hand allow better braking but cause the dust. You will sacrifice pad life for no dust but for me it's worth it since I just cleaned the interior of my Jeep for the first time in 2 year, outside gets washed every couple months lol.

Also FWIW, when I replaced the front pads this spring with the cheap ceramic Duralast pads from Autozone seem to be working well.

that is bull ****

this squeak usually happens when you install non original brakepads.
my pat squeaks every time without any link with weather or anything. it just squeaks when i push the brake. and i think it is not acceptable that a dealer respind that every pat does the same. maybe i'll ask them to change my pads and rotors while in warranty.

I've had several vehicles with squeaky brakes, including my old Studebaker, which has front disks. According to an old mechanic, the squeak is a result of the pads developing a glossy polished surface. On the Stude, I can make the squeak stop (for a while) by roughing up the pads with sandpaper. Haven't tried that on the Patriot yet.

With my '04 Neon and my '07 Compass it seems that rotor rust causes squeaking noise after it has sat maybe just overnight. It goes away after a couple of brake applications though. It seems to me that Chrysler uses a very rust prone steel with their brake rotors though, but who am I to say, maybe it's a good compromise. My Neon went a bit over 140,00 miles before brake pads needed changing.

Hiya
I had the same problem with my 57 pat. It used to squeak from the from breaks, started only slightly then got worse and worse.. I went to the dealership twice 1st time they dismissed me... 2nd time I made the Mechanic come out with me so he could hear it himself.. it was bad so he said he needed to 'take the shine' off the front pads.

Well this lasted about 3 weeks and the dreaded squeak was back!

Then TipTronic told me about the TSB no 05-001-09 where they have to replace the Pads and Rota's under warranty. So I went back armed with this and they changed them for me the next week and NO MORE SQUEAKING Horrahhh!!!! and it didn't cost a penny!

I'd Defo advise you go for this, I've told a fair few people on here about it and they've all used it and had the pads a rotas changed and no more problems

Good luck
