Soundproofing?

I just posted for the first time in the newbie section but there is a question I forgot to ask. My new Patriot is on order and I'm thinking about getting dealer applied spray-on soundproofing applied to the undercarriage. Two reasons: Firstly, I dislike road noise so anything I can do to reduce it I'll give a try and secondly, it should take care of me having to spray that ugly unfinished gas tank over in black. Has anyone ever done this when they received their new vehicle? Dealer cost is $299 which sounds reasonable.

I've never heard of spray on sound proofing. I know it used to be common to spay on a rust proofing but with today's car finishes, it is no longer necessary. Also, you will have to deal with a mess of gunk anytime you of someone has to work on those areas.

I'd think twice about getting it AND I would check out other places like Ziebart to comparison shop.

and secondly, it should take care of me having to spray that ugly unfinished gas tank over in black
Are you referring to that bright silver thing at the back of your car? If so, that is the muffler and you don't want to be spraying anything on it. The gas tank is already black.

Guess I'd better strip the black paint off my muffler Jim...

Fitzee, just use a high temp spray paint on the muffler and it'll look just fine and last a good long time....

D'oh, you are right...I meant the muffler. And I suppose that putting that black tarry stuff on it wouldn't be a good idea re heat issues. A stupid question but does anyone know what the temp. rating for that stuff is? I'll probably go the black high-temp paint route.

I'm not sure about the temp rating. I've been under there several times and it doesn't seem terribly hot.

Automotive stores have high heat paint for exhaust systems and rustoleum makes a high heat paint for barbeque grills. They are both rated at 1200 degrees and should be plenty good enough for your muffler.

If we can make the car quieter with Dynamat, why doesn't Jeep do it at the factory? It would only serve to boost sales.

Speaking of quiet. The the CVT seems to be louder than the 5 speed. I drove the Compass with CVT the other day and then went back to my Patriot with the 5 speed. It seemed the Compass was quite a bit louder. I did notice slightly higher RPM's with the CVT but not enough to account for that much sound increase.

Anyone else notice this?
