There is a strange smell i can't really desribe when i turn on my AC. Does anyone know if the 2010 Jeep Patriot AC unit has freon? I was told it could have a freon leak or to change my air filter. It smells maybe sweet or like bitter. The mechanice today said not to worry about it but i wanted to see if i'm ok breathing that in if it is freon.

Mildew

In Florida the smell is usually mildew which can be cleaned with a diluted solution of chlorine bleach and water. You may need to replace the cabin air filter and when you do have a look to see if it is green or brown which most likely indicates mildew.
The Patriot should not have Freon; it should be the new coolant RJ 45 I think is called.

Freon is tasteless and odorless - it's also contained in a closed system, external to the passenger compartment. If you got a leak in the system, it'd probably be all gone long before you noticed! And you'd notice because your a/c wouldn't be cold anymore. Thus concludes a lite PSA on freon.
