I am having a dilemma. I have a leased jeep patriot and the other day I accidentally wrapped my passenger side seat belt around the headrest. I have tried removing the headrest, but it does not come out. It just raises up higher. I also have tried to recline the seat all the way back and even forward and no luck. Now it is so tight it just seems hopeless. I can't even have anyone ride in the front now because the seat is in such an awkward position and the seat belt isn't functional. I was trying to see if someone knows of a way to fix it before I have to take it to the dealer and pay to have it fixed, which I am sure isn't cheap. Please I hope someone can help me! Thank you

The fix is so simple and fast that the dealer might just do it for free...

If all you have to do is quickly remove the headrest so you can retract the seat belt:

*THERE IS A WIRE INSIDE THE HEADREST RAIL*
*DO NOT DROP THIS WIRE INTO THE SEAT BACK*

Get yourself a paper clip and straighten out one end.
On the plastic cap on top of the seat (I forget which side) there is a small hole.
Insert paper clip wire into hole and push
At same time lift headrest assembly up and off seat back
Careful here as you are attached by the wires.
The connector will come into view
Disconnect and secure the lower (seat) wire from dropping down
Remove seat belt
Reverse procedure

Ta Da!

Simple removal

Easy headrest removal for 08 model. No tools, no paperclips. Just a baby finger or long thumbnail.

Everybody knows about the small flat metal "donut" thingy at the base of headrest rods; we push the tab release (sticking out) for height adjustment.

Now the other flat donut thingy on the same seat also has a hidden tab to release the headrest completely. This sneaky tab is hidden on the inboard edge of the metal donut. Just push this spring-loaded tab inward with your baby finger while gently pulling the entire headrest upward.

VoilĂ , she's completely free.

I had the exact same problem today with my 2013 Jeep Patriot. Someone put the passenger seatbelt behind the headrest and the belt stuck in that position. I was able to tilt the seat forward, lift the headrest, insert paperclip into hole and remove the headrest. I was then able to free the stuck seatbelt without even having to disconnect the wires. Thanks for the post. Mike
