Roof Rack, Cross Bars, etc

So I am new to the Jeep Patriot and am having the hardest time trying to find the 'right' set of cross bars/utility bars/etc that would be best for my Jeep. I've been searching through the internet and looking at a variety of bars and was hoping to get some opinions from those of you here that have experience with any of them.

In case anyone wants to know, the primary usage they will see is to mount a kayak carrier on it to haul my 'yak from place to place, whether at highway speeds or across town. Eventually I would like to get the cargo baskets or whatever but for now I am looking mainly at throwing my kayak up there.

I've found several bars and was hoping for some opinions or thoughts on them. While money is definitely an issue and I'd like to spend as little as possible while still getting a quality rack system, I am not against spending what it takes to get a good quality set. It'd just be nice if the cheaper ones are also good quality! So here is what I have found thus far:

Jeep Patriot Sport Utility Bars

Jeep Patriot Cross Bars (amongst the cheapest bars I can find)

Mopar OEM Jeep Patriot Roof Rack Cross Rails (not sure if this is the same as the first one... doesn't seem to be)

Thule Base Rack System
(debating between the standard square version and the aeroblade version)

Naturally if anyone has other suggestions I more than welcome them. This is my first Jeep (and first SUV, actually) and first time shopping for cross bars, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your responses and help! :)

I bought mine on ebay for 54 dollars with free shipping. They seem to be pretty great quality even though the price seems a bit low. The only down sides to these cross bars is that when they attach they sit low and barely rub on the roof of my Pat. I know several others have bought these same crossbars and have used them with roof baskets and other things. I know some guys have actually shortened the bars so they don't hang over the side. These are a great option if you don't want to spend a whole lot of money.

Looks like he raised his price by a dollar haha.. Still an awesome deal.

Oh wow... hurray for eBay. lol, that's a great deal indeed. I will keep that saved as a backup for now if none of these other ones seem worth the extra money. Thanks very much for that PatriotMB! xD

Yes, I meant to say that the attachment to the bars is what touches the roof. There is a rubber lining that is actually touching the roof. It's not metal on metal. It does give a slight wind noise but nothing really loud. I will say that they look great and you really can't beat the price.

I have the $54 eBay bars that I keep a roof basket on. They are decent for the money, and look much better once they have been shortened(I did a write-up on the procedure). Granted, they do touch the roof when you load them down, and they aren't low profile, but they were cheap and have held up to everything I've thrown at them, thus far.

It's not the bar that rubs the roof, rather the hardware that attaches the bars to the roof rails. As you can see in the first picture, there's plenty of clearance under the bars. The second picture shows the hardware.

Not all Jeeps come with them, and to buy the factory ones separate can be a bit pricey. Longer bars are better for hauling multiple kayaks on their belly instead of side

I am suprised Thule wants $300 for a set. That's crazy.

I think the blade design is worth paying a little more for fuel economy, but not that much.

I really don't like the idea of paint rub on the cheap ones.

Hey everyone. It's been a while but I am still perusing my options for a cross rail system. Having had some financial issues this past month I am now able to begin my search again. Thank you to everyone who has offered their help already, and at this point I have it narrowed down to one of these:

Mopar OEM Jeep Patriot Roof Rack Cross Rails
or
Roof Rack Cross Rails

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this. The second one, the Roof Rack Cross Rails... does anyone know if those are the same as these: Jeep Patriot Cross Bars?

I am pretty sure all of these are Mopar brand, but I am not sure if there are any major differences between the two that I should be aware of. If the pictures on the sites are to believed, then it appears the first option looks to be more aerodynamic, which would certainly make for better fuel economy on the highway. I could be wrong though.

Just as a refresher, I am looking to buy a kayak carrier for my Patriot that will allow me to carry one or two kayaks. Will either of these cross rails be sufficient for that?

Thanks again for all your guys' help! :D

I can almost guarantee that all 3 links are for the same cross bars. OEM for Patriot, MOPAR. The first one is just a generic picture.

Here's a few shots of mine.

Thanks for those photos Ironkique! That helps a lot, actually. All the product photos I've seen are way too small. How do you like these things? I am intending on hauling a kayak, possibly two as time goes on, with my Patriot. Do you think the OEM cross bars would work?

I like those cheaper ones on eBay too, I have to admit. I have always believed you get what you pay for, so I am a bit wary about these ones. It sounds like they are good quality, though, from what I am hearing from multiple people on this forum.

Since I am likely to use these cross bars a lot, and I have no problem throwing down $150 for a set of bars if it is worth it, do you guys think that the OEM model is worth the investment? (I will say I refuse to spend $300+ on the Thule brand stuff... that's insane).

They actually fit pretty well. Only about an inch on either side. Thanks for the info, though.

If you have the extra money, go for the OEM ones. I'm a cheap ass and will only be hauling bikes and a clamshell luggage box (when I have to drive back across the country) so the 150lbs weight limit is more than enough.

#22 ·
lol I totally understand and am tempted to buy the cheaper ones, I have to confess. Unfortunately I am having a hard time finding anything online that tells me what the weight limit for the OEM cross bars is. Anyone have an idea?

I just wonder because my kayak is pretty heavy for a 'yak at around 70-75lbs (it's an Old Town Vapor 10). I am trying to con a friend into getting a 'yak as well and if she goes for it I will need to be able to throw two kayaks on top of my Patriot. The 150lb weight limit for the cheaper set linked to at eBay would technically be able to handle two of these kayaks, though just barely.

i think i read on another thread that the roof rails max load is 150lbs. so i think regardless of what cross bars you end up with, 150lbs will be the limit. i think. dont quote me. unless im right.

I'm sure both rails would have no problem carrying a pair of canoes. I bought the Mopar ones for their low profile and they don't stick out past the rails. they look Clean. The Ebay ones are cheaper though and have more surface area if you need it. I guess it comes down to preference.
On mine I threw 2 boxes that weighed 125 lbs each.

P.S They're was somebody on this forum who threw like 6 canoes on his roof. I don't know what bars he was using. Maybe someone can help out with finding that info

@JLOBAUGH nice tutorial! @DOC it seems great for the money! do you have a photo of the racks from a different angle? all I need racks for is my snowboard. would those racks be sufficient?

#26 ·
the only ones i have right now are in my gallery. i could go take one, but they're off the riot due to a long drive today. i'll slap them back on tomorrow and take some new ones. and im very certain they would be sufficient.

KAYAK J RACK

Does anyone here have the production crossbars with the knobs to tighten them down(82210804 I believe, just like the ones in IROKIQUE's post above) and a jrack for a kayak? I'd like to know if there are any issues with mounting as these bars seem fairly low to the roof and the hardware on the racks I've been looking at on-line have some long bolts.

I want to mount the rack as close to the rails as possible as I'm getting old with shoulder and back issues so the closer it is to me the better. With my Cherokee I would just put the yak(Pungo 140, 55lbs) decks down on the crossbars but with the boat's length and the rearward position of the Pat's rails I think a jrack will be easier to load and tie down and will better protect my new bright white Pat' as well.:)

I'm looking at the Pungo 140 and j racks, but I haven't purchased either yet. I have been looking at the Yakima bowdown, and don't believe there are any long bolts to worry about.. but the crossbar knobs may get in the way a bit and put the j-rack a couple inches further away, but that's the only potential problem I see

Great boat as I'm sure you know. I probably would have been better off physically with the 120 but I love the advantages of the extra length.

I like the Bowdowner racks. Had'nt seen those before. Will have to see if I can find them in the flesh. Thanks for the recommendation.

Ebay Cross Bar Advice - Time is Really an Issue!

Please help! I'm running out of time to get a set of cross bars for my 2008 Patriot & can't afford the $164 from a dealer. I've read hundreds of posts here & spent many hours researching the ebay versions of roof rack cross bars, but most of the links to the auctions do not work anymore, the sellers are out of business or the specific sellers are not mentioned in the posts. I have seen great comments on the roof racks of discountramps, but can anyone give a recommendation on their cross bars & the exact model number for my 2008 Jeep Patriot, as they carry 4 different models - (RLB-54) New Universal Fit Roof Rack Cross Bars Car Top Luggage Carrier Apex Steel Cross Bars from Rage Powersports $39.99 free ship or BIN for $46.99; (CL-RB-1004-49) Universal Roof Rack Cross Bars Car Top Luggage Carrier Carbon Steel starting bid $45.99 or same model starting bid $65.40 or BIN $71.99; (RB-1006-49) Universal Roof Rack Cross Bars Car Top Luggage Carrier Carbon Steel Roof Crossbars by Rage Powersports starting bid $56.31 or BIN $61.99; (RB-1001-49) Universal Roof Rack Cross Bars Car Top Luggage Carrier Rage Powersports Premium Aluminum starting bid $65.40 or BIN $71.99 - all with free shipping. They seem to have a lot of used customer return? models for sale, which makes me nervous.

Another ebay seller I've seen mentioned is comfortstools but they don't seem to sell them anymore. I have one positive recommendation for yesbuyautoaccessories Jeep Grand Cherokee Roof Rack Cross Bars Luggage Carrier for $65.95 plus $9.95 shipping, has anyone else tried them? I haven't been able to find which ebay seller carried the $54 ones that many people recommended, the auction links are too old. This is a fabulous website & I'm amazed at how people have modified & dressed up their Patriots. This crossbar issue is the first problem I've run into with my car but it sure is driving me nuts. Next I have to find a used cartop carrier. I have to drive my mom 550 miles back home with 4 dogs, so the rooftop carrier is the only way I can possibly do it. Bless you all for your advice!
