I am quite frustrated with the dearth of AT tires offered in our OEM size of 215/65R17. The Cooper Discoverer A/T3 is one of, if not the best, all-around AT tire available, IMHO. Unfortunately, it is not offered in a 215/65R17 OEM profile. I don't want to play the "will it rub at full lock" game or inherit the additional weight with 225 on up - the closest 17" Cooper Discoverer available is 235/65R17, not an option without additional cost and headache of lifts, spacers, pinch weld mods, fuel economy loss, computer reflash, etc.

In order for me to run an OEM size in this tire (215/70R16), I had to purchase a complete set of Jeep black steelies. The wheels look great and the tire is performing incredibly well since the Fall, taking on snow and ice, on and off road, without a hitch. Nonetheless, I want to run my 17" alloys in the Spring, Summer, and Fall and simply do not want to go with anything larger than 215.

I emailed and telephoned Cooper Consumer Relations requesting that they offer the Discoverer A/T3 in 215/65R17 so that my wife and I can run this outstanding tire on our 2014 Pats.

Their email address is: cooperinfo@coopertire.com.
Their Consumer Relations telephone number is: 800.854.6288.
Their Main Office telephone number is: 419.423.1321

If anyone else feels the same, please put in your request as well.

Goodyear Wrangler SR-A 215/65R17: 28.0" outside diameter; 8.7" section width.

Cooper Discoverer A/T3 235/60R17: 28.31" outside diameter; 9.6" section width.

The tread depth of the Cooper 235 is less than their other sizes (12.5 v. 13.5-14.0).

Overall close, but I want the narrower profile of the OEM, especially in snow. I don't know, of course, what the Cooper specs would be for the 215/65R17, but probably close to the Goodyear.

I bought 16" wheels just so I could run that tire!!! I would love a set on my 17" wheels too!! The 225 or 235 would just be too wide. I know my 16" ones are heavy in 225/70/16

#10 ·
Your 16" 225/70/16 AT3s aren't that heavy. 30lbs each the stock 215/65/17 sra's are 28lbs each so you are getting a decently aggressive tire without too much weight, it's almost the perfect balance. Your steel rims weigh a bit more than the factory 17s but your setup is still relatively light.

Relatively, but the 215 on the fsctory alloys would be lighter. We can and do make do with 16" wheels and the sizes currently available, but the purpose of this thread is to encourage others to lobby Cooper for the perfect OEM size Discoverer A/T3 for our 17"-wheeled-Pats. Are you opposed to Cooper offering the Discoverer in OEM sizing for some reason?

#12 ·
Absolutely not opposed at all. It's just that the demand for tires in a particular size need to be quite great before a company would be able to make the size that would be profitable for them.

There is a lot of us, but in the grand scheme of things we aren't that great of a number.

Since the offer tires that are nearly the same size as OE I can't see it happening.

As for the weight of wheels, I weight stock 16" steel and 17" aluminum wheels a few years ago.

17" were 18lbs and Steel were 22 lbs.

I"ve run a ton of different tire combinations, and compared to the stock 17" wheel and SRA combo my current setup doesn't feel any heavier or cause any adverse handling on it offroad. My firestones are 34lbs, so i'm pushing 6lbs per wheel heavier than stock, not much of a difference.

The 215/70/16 tires you have weight roughly 30lbs as well, so with your setup you are about as heavy as I am.

I used to run steel wheels with 39lb tires, and that was way to heavy (225/75/16) it hurt handling and offroad performance.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade but there are tires close in size to stock that can be used, plus who wants to stay stock when bigger tires (within reason) mean more ground clearance. =)

You would also be 6lbs

Absolutely correct!!! They are NOT going to make a tire size for a handful of people. The demand would have to be overwhelming for them to cover the cost of manufacture set up for any given size tire.

Lift it and go 16" or 15" it opens you up to a plethora of rubber options.

My lift was no headache at all but a great experience,no computer flash,or pinch weld mod necessary, the wheels were back spaced perfectly 4.5"=no added spacing required, and 8.6L/100km at 90kph is fantastic highway gas mileage..@ 235/70R/16 on alloy wheels....the vehicle also rides so much nicer with the extra sidewall and all.

Plus it makes the riot work and look sooo much better!!!

I hardly believe that there are only a mere "handful of people" that want the Discoverer A/T3 in a size that comes from the factory on virtually every Latitude and Limited Patriot and Compass for several years now. As I wrote, I believe that a great many people want an OEM size tire option for the Patriot, people who are not at all interested in modifying their Pats in any way save for new OEM-sized tires. Fortunately, it seems Cooper agrees.

After speaking with Doug A. from Cooper Tires Consumer Quality Systems, the "Products Team" is indeed aware of the marketing opportunity, as well as the present and future demand for the 215/65R17 size. Further, and although he was being careful, he told me that I would be happy to know that I may indeed have my wish this coming summer! This and other aspects of the conversation lead me to firmly believe that this size is definitely coming in 2015. Now on to the ATW!

Keep the requests rolling in folks, as they have been, and indeed are, being heard!

For me, this is great because I dont plan on lifting mine. At least I dont think I am. And even if I do Ill get 235s most likely. Having a set in 215 makes them a great winter option. The only offroading I intend to do is up a couple wide trails to where we park and walk out to our hunting spots, and driving across a snowy field when its too damn cold to walk out and get my trail cam

#18 ·
The winter option is exactly why I want the 215 and the size works outstandingly well on and off road all year.

BTW Bearclaw, I was able to speak with the main consumer rep, Doug, by dialing the Main Office number, not the 800 number. He a very knowledgeable, nice guy who gets out to a lot of wheeling events and enjoys talking about them.

nice thread i was able to learn some info here.
its also great because my stock infinitys on my 2014 pat have less then a 8th of an inch of tread on them and with all the snow weve been getting barley been able to hold on. lol
i was thinking about going with a 235 65 17r tire, in either the geolanders or at3 but now you guys make a point about it may being to wide for the snow.

what do you guys think about trying to go up in height it will help with the snow and still help when i airdown for the beach this summer. im on the beach atleast twice a week the whole summer.

any input would be great since im looking at buying within the next coulpe days

I received an e-mail response last week to the message I submitted through the company site:

"Dear Mr. [me], Thank you for your inquiry. We are constantly reviewing our size offerings in each of our product lines. We will be reviewing the next round of A/T3 size additions very soon, and will be sure to evaluate the 215/65R17. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Cooper Tire
This is additionally encouraging in conjunction with the info received during my telephone conversation with Doug A. I am going to clean up my alloys and begin saving up for a set of 215s come end of Summer or next Fall:pepper: that is, if we ever see +0F temps and no more +12ft snow banks on my street by then...

Regarding the Cooper Discoverer ATW, I just sent another email (why not):

Greetings Cooper Tire:

Please offer the Discoverer ATW (and A/T3) in OEM sizes for the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass, specifically, 215/70R16 and 215/65R17.

Jeep Patriot and Compass sales have increased significantly each and every year since the line was introduced in 2007, with sales for 2014 accounting for a large part of Chrysler's overall record-breaking sales figures yet again. http://media.chrysler.com/newsrelease.do;jsessionid=987565BDF56B422D019BA2C2E9FE9991?&id=16272&mid=

Further, Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com has named the 2015 Jeep® Patriot a winner of its 5-Year Cost to Own Award. For a third consecutive year, the Jeep Patriot has the lowest 5-Year Cost to Own in the compact SUV/crossover category. http://media.chrysler.com/newsroom.do?id=92&mid=130

I know that a great many Jeep Patriot and Compass owners are desperate for an all-terrain winter and all-terrain tire in OEM sizes, as there are no AT offerings in these sizes save for the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, and it is well known that the Goodyears are no comparison to the Cooper Discoverer! I believe that Cooper would sell a great many of the ATW and A/T3 in the 215/70R16 and 215/65R17 OEM sizes.

Thank you for your attention and consideration.

I have 225/70/16 AT3's and I love them, I would totally buy another set for my 17" wheels and I would get them in 215/65/17 size if they were available. Otherwise my only other choice from Cooper would be their CS5's but those are a street tire.

Does anyone know if Cooper Discoverer A/T3s are directional tires? I'll check tonight, but would like to know now. BTW, I found a helpful brochure from Cooper Australia here: Cooper Discoverer 4WD Driver's Guide
I intend to do the five tire rotation in Diagram "D" if these are non-directional, as my full size spare is also the exact same OEM wheel as my other four.

I just learned that the Renegade Trailhawk features OEM size 215/65R17 tires. I also just found a thread on the new Jeep Renegade Forum that they too want the Discoverer A/T3 in OEM size. FYI.

I submitted the following message to Cooper Tire via their websites:

I wanted you to know that the new Jeep Renegade Trailhawk utilizes the 215/65R17 tire size. If ever a Jeep begged for a real AT tire, the Cooper Discoverer A/T3, it is this vehicle! The Renegade is going to sell like mad. In addition, every Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass (Latitude and Limited both) made since 2007 features the OEM tire size 215/65R17. Cooper should not miss this opportunity to be the exclusive OEM size alternative to the Goodyear SR-A 215/65R17 for the Jeep Renegade, Patriot, and Compass, as I believe your company would sell tens of thousands of the Discoverer A/T3 in this size. Further, Jeep is planning a replacement vehicle for the Patriot and Compass in upcoming years and I am almost certain that the vehicle will utilize the same OEM size tire, 215/65R17.

FWIW.

Well written message O'DubhGhaill, I would bite on that idea if I worked for Cooper

#29 ·
I just received a response from Cooper Tire's Director of Product Management, Americas:

Thank you for the note. We appreciate your request and insights for a Discoverer AT3 in a 215/65R17.

We have added this to our review process that takes place in May. It is a very viable consideration. We will consider in both the Discoverer AT3 and the Discoverer ATW.

We like the idea !

#30 ·
Nice, a step in the right direction.

#31 ·
I like what I am reading! I love these tires on my 16" wheels, my 17" wheels are just begging for a matching set... Thanks O'DubhGhaill for reaching out to them on this request. Your help is certainly appreciated.

Now that I think of it, if they sold this size on 17" wheels a year ago, I wouldn't have even bothered to find 16" wheels to install them on.

Cooper reviewed OEM Jeep sizes for the A/T3 and ATW and is moving forward, according to a review they did last week and an email I got from contacts above. Seems the Renegade and record breaking Patriot and Compass sales make the decision worthwhile afterall. Fingers crossed, but it seems to be a go. Foolish not to if BFG and Falken are seeing the 215 light!
