I have a 2008 Jeep Patriot and I seem to have a rattling/squeaking noise that is coming from the trunk area towards the driver side. I moved some stuff aorund, but no luck. It almost seems like it could be the whole tire and jack setup in the trunk moving and rubbing. Everything seems tight, but I dont know. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or if anyone had any ideas.

One idea is to remove everything from your Patriot. Remove the spare tire, jack, and the cover.

If the noise continues, have someone sit in the back while you drive. See if they can determine if its inside the car or outside.

The pat is a rattle box......found out that the plastic spare cover is bouncing on rough road. The rattles is the only thing negative i have against the Pat.

I hear this all the time. I now have a blanket layed back there all of the time just to keep the sound muffled and to protect the plastic when I load things back there.

I was thinking of putting some felt or foam strips on the rear deck where it rests on the car to stop or reduce it rattling when I go over bumps.

Gaze: I do exactly the same thing only it's a rug. Maybe that's why I am not hearing anything from the rear. Quiet as a church mouse back there. My rug is an old berber remnant. Keeps things from sliding around.

I hear the same noise. I was gonna try putting some foam down as well where the plastic cover sits and if that didn't work I think I'll end up buying the Jeep carpet cargo mat to go over the plastic cover and weigh it down so it doesn't jump around. Until it gets warmer I'm just going to turn up the stereo.

Try to put some felt on the cover's "hinges" space. It works.
Also, have you ever seen sort of a black molded cardboard thing behind the spare tire? It rattles too. I put some paper towels against it and no noise ever since.
Another noise source can be the tonneau cover.
You don't have to buy a cargo mat, go to Home Depot and look for those anti-slippery foams that go underneath the mats. It could work.

Oh yeah! The tonneau cover. I don't have any rattles, but drive with the rear seats folded down and use the Pat like a pickup. I removed the tonneau cover and keep it in my garage. Perhaps that's why I don't hear any rattles.
