Patriot Insurance More Than Others?

Considering a 2013 Patriot, I asked our insurance agent to compare full coverage rates of the Pat vs. the CRV and Forester.

I was shocked that the Pat was the highest, about $90 per year more than the lowest.

I used these specs.: 2wd Pat ($18,000), AWD Forester ($22,000), 2wd CRV ($23,000). I told our agent I was looking at the base model with auto tranny and air conditioning minimum. Prices are conservative guesses, based on sticker prices and my bargaining skills.

The CRV was cheapest, the Forester in the middle, and the Pat was on top, with about a $90 spread from low to high.

I really thought the Pat would be the cheapest, thinking that it costs the least and probably is simpler to maintain (less bells and whistles).

Comments? And.......thank you.

Wow that's weird...I just switched my insurance to my pat today and it only went from 380 to 425 (6 month)....and my old car was a 10 year old Toyota Corolla.

What company do you carry insurance with?

Can't compare apples to apples because different country but when I switched my somewhat specific insurance from my old Suzuki XL7 (2001) to my brand new, off the lot 2011 Patriot it cost me under $100 more for the year.

I'm OK with that because a new vehicle costs more to repair than an old one.

Thing is different companies charge different rates...is your insurance guy a broker representing many different companies or is he an agent only representing SAtate Farm or something?
Shop around is what I'm saying/asking.

I have Progressive. When I added the Patriot and dropped the previous car (1995 Nissan Pathfinder), my 6 month premium for 2 cars went up by $80 for the 6 month coverage period.

I considered the increase pretty reasonable for the difference in the value of the Pat vs. the old rig.

Thanks for the replies. The quotes I received for all three vehicles (Pat, CRV, Forester) are quite good. No complaints there.

I just am wondering why the more expensive vehicles ended up with cheaper insurance rates. I would also think the CRV and Forester would cost more to repair and maybe have higher theft rates.

I was hoping to justify the "less reliable" Pat (sorry if I hurt any feelings) over the CRV and Forester if the insurance was cheaper on the Pat.

i have State Farm and i'm in Southeastern Pennsylvania, 5 mins from the Philly border (i say border b/c much of Philly is a war zone without sides)

27 y/o unmarried male with 0 accidents on record (on record, cough cough...lol)

i drive a beater Civic that i've had since my high school days. it gets me where i need to be and it's been paid off for over 6 years. i'm dropping a whopping $800/yr for 250/500 car insurance and some extra goodies like income supplement from medical disability (up to $40,000 / yr), rental car insurance, and $100,000 in property damage liability yada-yada.

i talked to my State Farm agent and he said if i get a 2013 Patriot my insurance will drop to $668/yr. i asked how that is possible, and he said that the Civic is in the 3rd highest risk category in the industry due to auto theft, parts theft, vandalism, lack of ESC, lack of ABS, lack of SAB. he said the Patriot is in the 4th to lowest risk category (Wrangler is 3rd to lowest...i guess the lowest would be a Powerweels? who knows haha). i asked about the Forester (i will be considering a 2014 Forester as well) and he said my premium will be $708/yr

Yes, but!! When insuring a more newer car vs. an older one, the insurance would go up. Staying with one company for a long time makes a difference in rates when you get a new/replacement vehicle.
I've been with AAA for over 30 years. A new service club member is a state farm agent. I had him run my numbers--and for a "new" customer to him, I'd be paying $1100 more a year for three vehicles.

I went from having only liability on my 02 Nissan Frontier which was about 450 bucks/6 months (approx...i cant really remember for sure) to my full coverage on the Pat which is at about 786/6 months. I think my deductable is 250? or maybe 300? I don't remember haha.

*Edit: oh and I use USAA

Thanks guys. jgg204, dixiedawg, and others.......I still believe that the Patriot should be less than the CRV and Forester. I will investigate more. Maybe my agent didn't follow my specifications.

Other FYI:

-After my wife suffered life long injuries from being hit by a non insured, non licensed driver, I HIGHLY urge people to have non-insured coverage on their policy.....at least a half million.

- Researching these vehicles, the new Forester FB engine is getting lots of complaints about high oil consumption on their forums. Not sure if it is "internet amplification".

the non-insured coverage is for your vehicle if the other person doesn't have insurance. it makes no sense to have $500,000 in coverage as you only drive a $25,000 vehicle. your insurance company will also sue the uninsured driver for the money to cover the expenses of fixing your car

there is something separate for supplemental salary payments if you get injured and become medically disabled. that's what i have. i pay ~$32 extra each year and if i get injured in a car accident and can't work, state farm will pay me up to $40,000 each year

^ what do you mean by "at least a half million" ??? that's how much your insurance would cover if in an accident such as that?

My JKU is cheaper than our patriot by about $75 / 6 months. Still haven't figured out why.

When we were looking at trading my wife's 2010 Toyota Matrix to a 2011 Jeep Patriot, I told my wife to contact the insurance company for a quote. I told her the cost of insuring the Patriot would probably be a deal breaker (going from a "car" to a SUV). To our surprise the Patriot actually lowered our insurance premiums! Guess it is cheaper to fix a Jeep than a Toyota. Also from what I read on this forum, the Patriot is like a brick wall in an accident...maybe that has something to do with lower insurance rates!

I called before I bought my patriot and asked what the rates were. My Uncle is my insurance guy, he told me that the New upper level Patriots did get expensive insurance wise, he wasnt sure why. He advised me to get a sport.

My GUESS is that it has to do with the value of the vehicle, and that it is a jeep with 4x4. 25 + thousand dollars worth of new car on the off road trail, picking up "pinstripes", fording rivers, and blasting through snow drifts makes the adjusters nervous.

Many, if not most, insurance companies have exclusions written into their policies stating they will not cover losses that occur off-road for that reason. In reality, every vehicle (even something like a compact sedan) carries a risk of being damaged off-road as far as an underwriter is concerned, and it's not specific to 4x4 Jeeps.

Yea, I travel a lot of gravel and follow loaded logging trucks too.

At slow speeds the dual tires pick up small rocks between the two tires and then, as speed increases, the tires move out and up which opens the space between the tires and they send the rock out at high velocity. Most hit the flaps or the underbody/wheel well area of the truck but the ones that escape...

Sucks to be right behind them when they decide to do that...scary too, I've heard of them coming right through and entering the passenger compartment...so far for me just shattered windshields.
