Patriot Identification

I am new here, and glad to be here. I just bought a used 2010 Jeep Patriot with the 2.4L. It is a 4WD. I love it, it is a great ride and gets just about as good mileage as my 2007 Chevy Cobalt was getting.

The problem is that I am having a hard time identifying it's setup. As best I can tell, it is a Sport model, but I don't know exactly which.

I don't know if it has the Low-Range setting, the Freedom Drive I or II, the Hill-Descent or the Off-Road package.

I have looked through the manuals, but I don't see anywhere that explains how things are engaged, if they are automatic or what. It simply says what indicators light up when something is engaged, but it doesn't explain how to engage those things.

The vehicle does have the center "T" handle labled "4WD LOCK". The vehicle doesn't have fog lamps, but seems to have a plastic skid plate. The accessories seem to be the standard setup - 1-disc am/fm player, NO sun roof, NO 115v outlet. The instrument bezel does not include the EVIC system, but does have indicators for OFF ROAD, Hill Descent, but this may just be a generic bezel, and those functions aren't used.

I checked the door frame and it doesn't list its specific model.

What I think it is - is the AWD with the 4WD LOCK assist and NO low-range, but then I don't know why the back tag says 4WD if it is AWD. And, I think it has the Freedom Drive I. But, I am just not sure, so that's why I came here.

How can I tell? Any help is appreciated. My last 4x4 was a 1996 Ford Bronco (which is still in the family), and everything was manually engaged, which means I am having a hard time figuring this thing out, so thank you for the help. :)

I have the 2011 base model with a few extras like power windows and licks and heated mirrors. Mine is 4x4 too. You have the base. Usually it will say trail rates when it has fd ll. With the evic mine shows off road, so I do believe it's just generic. Still an awesome jeep. I love mine

You definitely have the FDI. They call it a 4x4 because of the ability to lock the front and rear axle at 50/50. Instead of being part time 4x4, its more like full time auto 4x4, and when you pull the t handle its in locked 4x4.

Do you have a manual transmission? Five Speed?

You definitely have the FD1 system autostick only comes with that. FDII is the rock climber version with a higher ground clearance and the super low ratio. Your version will get better mileage on the highway because around 60 mph you can cruise at 2000 rpms, the FD2 will cruise at 3000 rpms because of the higher gearing.

AWD, the computer distributes the power as needed, but when you get into heavy stuff, locking in 4WD will give you the most traction. be sure to turn OFF the ESP. ESP is a system to reduce skidding, but in situations like going in snow, because it reduces power to slipping wheels, it can grind you to a halt. Use the autostick to keep you in a low gear.

I have been driving my 08 FDI 4WD Pat through tons of snow in the winter and it is a mountain goat if used properly. You should be able to download the owners manual from Jeep.com. Good luck!

Got the Owner's Manual. I just wasn't sure which parts were relevant to my vehicle. Thanks for the info.

What did your salesman say it was ?? No , dont worry he would'nt know now anyway!!
I had to use a specific Car Lot because my credit isn't all that great. It was a smaller Chevy dealer with a fairly good sized used lot. But, yea, the salesman didn't know much about the vehicles.

I'm not upset in the least bit about what I ended up with. I love the Patriot. I would have liked the Low-Gearing, but really I've never encountered anything, other than pulling posts and bushes out of the ground that would really warrant the necessity of Low-Gearing. In Denver, it is the Mile High city, but most of our snows will melt from the roads within a day or two, and the DOT does keep the main roads pretty clear. When I've gone up in the hills, I've never had to use Low-Gearing for anything other than just to try it out for the fun of it. I don't like taking my vehicles on anything too rough. So, I think the FDI will serve me well.

I also have a 2010 Jeep Patriot. In 2010, they did it based on packages.

If the front bumper and back bumper have silver on the top of it, it's probably the Limited model. Limited model comes with basically everything. As you said, it's probably not that.

Next, if it was the Latitude package, it would have almost everything included in the Limited model. You'd see things like factory silver body side moldings and a Latitude badge (unless the owner had it removed). It would also have features like the 4x4, 17 inch aluminum wheels and larger tires (215/60/17) heated seats, heated mirrors, remote start, your radio would come with a Sirius Satellite package, and an auxiliary plug for MP3. Assuming you don't have these options, it's not a Latitude.

I don't know much about the Freedom Drive packages, but I do know that FD1 would come with the 4x4 mode also. I don't know if it was possible to get a "regular" sport with 4x4 mode without it being FD1. Again, they only sold the Patriots in packages. Dealers typically ordered packages.

No fog lights though? The skid plate could be an add-on by the previous owner. You should just call a local Jeep Dealer and ask to have your Patriot scanned to see what model you have.
