Parking brake / Hand brake

Hi all,

I am not sure if this is another subtle difference between US and European vehicles, or whether I may have a fault developing.
In all of my previous cars (all European) when I have applied the parking brake / hand brake the relevant light illuminates on the dash and is constant.

When I apply the parking brake / hand brake on my Patriot the light on the dash flashes.
I know this can happen when using the foot brake and the brake fluid level sloshes around giving mixed reading but I have never known it with the hand brake.
Is this normal or have I got a fault with the braking system?

Regards,

Paul

According to the owners manual this is normal for vehicles with automatic transmissions.

From the 2013 Owners manual:
When the parking brake is applied and the automatic
transmission is placed in gear, the “Brake Warning
Light” will flash. If vehicle speed is detected, a chime
will sound to alert the driver. Fully release the parking
brake before attempting to move the vehicle.

Could be a difference between US and European/UK specs as you mentioned. The US spec Patriots do not come in 6spd Manual...is yours diesel?

I was in Scotland recently and rented an Audi with a manual transmission and if I pressed the clutch and shifted into gear prior to dropping the parking brake the brake light in the dash would flash along with a chime.

Check to see if the owners manual from your vehicle states something different than what I cut and pasted, I imagine Jeep uses a different owners manual for non-US spec vehicles.

I don't think you are developing a fault unless I am too. Until this evening I forgot to observe what happens with the handbrake indicator light in my vehicle. Mine flashes as well. My Patriot is a 2014, US Spec model, and I have only had it for about 5 weeks so I think the flashing is a feature and not a problem.
