so i have a black patriot and i am thinking of painting all of the silver inside on the dash and doors black, do u think this would look good, and how hard is it?

nope. First off this plastic is trash. It scratches easily, and scuffs even easier. If you were to paint, the paint would not hold for crap. It would be chippnig off all day. Dont do it!

not specifically a compass bezel, just a navigation bezel.

pat and compass, not caliber. Their bezel bends at an angle at the very bottom for the hazzard/ESP/Heated Seats buttons.

spray it with vinyl dye. I am told it works very well. i was going to try it on my convertible top boot, it was silver I want it to be white...I couldnt find any vinyl dye. it isnt paint, it actually bonds with the plastic it does not fill in the cracks/texture...ie if cut a groove in the plastic it will still be there just a different color.

i painted mine ill take pics tomorrow i also leathered it its doesnt peal if you prep it properly i dont do it as i have a tan so it kinda give it some like i dont know i like black but not alll black...just sand the platic with 500 and do not break through or youll have to buy some filler primer take you time and get tremclad dont get base and clear.

Hi, Jrodspat
Actually, you can paint your dashboard black without risk of scratching easily or chippnig off. You have to sandpaper the surface and use metallic colour (like the one that your car is painted) with elastic-add and 2-3 layers of gloss laquer on top. That is very tough and will last for long. The bad thing is that it costs tooo much and must be done by proffessional.

there we go take a look ill take better ones later. its a big pain i did mine with base and clear but i had a paint booth so using a spary gun in a garage is not suggested lol. so i say some acrylic enamel or lacquer light coats scuff like i said and if you need primer get it and sand the primer with 500 prime the whole thing not just where you need it...if you break through you need to get promotor so do you best to keep the silver.

If prepped properly, it will look good, and last a long time. I redid mine in silver because my car is silver, and i did a project to my dash to give me a door over that center cubby and i thought it would suit, and look the most factory. But YMMV, black would work as well.

Oh ya, it is possible to do it in a garage, but not on your first attempt, i had a buddy spray it with rattle can paint in the paint booth where he works at first, until i spilled super glue on to it about 6 months after the fact, and then had to respray it, and didnt want to ask him to spray it again.

1 tip though, I found that having a secondary dash bezel allowed me to do better work, as I wasnt concerned about getting the car back together for the next day. And if you do decide to spray it in your garage, make sure that there are no cars in there!

Dye isnt as great as you make it out. Plus, have you done your homework on this kind of plastic. This isnt some kind of interior vinyl that will take die well.

Not to mention, he mentioned that he had a paint gun and all the goodies, so painting is 100 times easier for him.

Have you ever worked with dye before? Its not all that nice, and not fun at all.

Piano black

I test drove a Mazda Tribute and liked the piano black finish of the center console. Though I have a LG VX8600 phone that is gloss black and wow is it always full of finger prints!

There is a thread on here (in the Electrical & Audio section), where the owner wrapped his silver trim pieces in a carbon fiber vinyl. I thought it came out great. Just a suggestion as an option.
