My wife and I are thrilled with our 08 Pat, now with more than 23K almost carefree motoring.

In late July we began to hear an odd rumbling noise when using the A/C fan. Our dealership is no longer servicing Jeep, so I had to drive 100 miles R/T and wait for the repair.

They found a dead mouse in the fan area, cleaned it up (the fan, the mouse was too far gone) charged me for the service. We live in a rural setting, but 1) do not have a mouse problem 2) in over 12 years never had a problem like this with any vehicle.

We went ahead and put traps and poison down anyway. At this time we have 5 cars in our parking area, and the Jeep often is left outside. Two of these cars have been here at least 6 years.

There is a 2003 small Chevy parked in the garage as a favor to a young lady doing a college semester in Europe. It’s been there for the summer and runs perfectly. In the meantime we took a two week trip in the Pat, so it’s been here for less than 2 weeks since the repair.

Yesterday the fan began rumbling again. This is getting to be a serious problem.

This time, I’m not as willing to pay for the repair. This time of year is a great hassle to take a vehicle in too. The dealer servicing the last problem had a “tough tuna” attitude about the problem. One of us will have to take a vacation day.

Any suggestions as what to do?

Did it ever smell? I would think it would make a heck of a stink. Yep Jeepstr67

The first time it smelled horrible, not smelling anything yet. I can't imagine anybody being able to stand the odor. Scared the he@@ out of me yesterday when I turned it on. Really vibrates.

Will me messing with the fan void any warranty?

Normally I do not like to post negatives. Chrysler showed me a side I’m not sure I like. Mouse In Blower Fan II No longer a Dealer Near Me.

It was a busy week, but needed to do something about the stench and fan motor. We were not driving it early in the week. I had a non mechanic person look at it Wed. but he did not feel comfortable in doing the repair. He did look at the manual to see if it had a cabin air filter?? I assumed he was going to show me how to change it due to the smell. His consensus was no. We could not find it listed in the manual.

Thursday I took off early to get somebody to help me. Took it to the dealer I purchased the Pat from, no longer a Jeep dealer. I was again told essentially to clean my home. The exact words from a man who had the demeanor of Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Kookos Nest after the lobotomy. I believe his words were fumigate your area. This would be about 150 acres. Again, we have never ever had any trouble like this before. I asked him, you mean I’m going to have to spend a day at the dealer a month for this problem? He said, yep.

It was insulting to me and my wife.

Having to fix it, I humbly requested an appointment. Then I thought, maybe I should ask for a rough quote. Smart thing, for he quoted a starting figure 5 times higher than the Jeep dealer I had it repaired last month from. Wow! Feeling pretty low now.

I took in to the first repair shop I could find. Nice folks, quoted me 47 bucks, and seemed to have empathy. Had a couple of Blue Moon beers next door while they fixed it.
Now the plot thickens. ***I should note one of the mechanics refused to pull it in due to the smell.

Car done, but the mechanic tells me he has some bad news. He walked me to my Pat and showed me there was no cabin filter installed………..so there was nothing there, just a big empty spot. (he always checks cabin air filters when working on fans) He assured me this is why we are having the trouble. His opinion was either it was removed at the dealership, or none was ever in. He said if I could wait a minute or two he could order one which I did. The part came from the place I purchased the vehicle. I tried to show the x-jeep delivery guy, but he refused to even look.

We have a complaint number with Chrysler.

Catch 22. The official Chrysler stand. Tough Tuna. I should have taken it back to the 100 mile round trip Jeep dealer. This would be the dealer who fixed it, but did not notice a missing cabin air filter in July. Hence, I would never think we had a cabin filter, or hole. Catch 22.

Any suggestions?

WOW! Thanks Todde702

This site is so helpful, thanks.

So, folks who own Sports have a cabin filter slot, but no filter. Of all the cheap cost cutting ways I've ever heard of. Well, I bought a house once with no lightbulbs, but not putting in a 4 buck filter in a new vehicle tops that. Has the no cabin filter thing been discussed? If so I apologize for not seeing it. I agree with Joe Becker, you can make a great filter on the cheap if you wish.

Wish the dealer would have told me this. Until our road was paved recently we drove 6 miles on gravel per day. I was disapointed our Pat didn't have filtered cabin air.

I will take all the advice you folks have given. Cleaned the vents and outside air intake yesterday. I was worried the smell would be hard to get rid of. Doesn't seem so.
