Howdy from Houston,

So, two weeks ago I purchased a used (10,500 mile) 2014 White Jeep Patriot with manual transmission. I want to frickin BABY this vehicle since it's the closest thing to a new vehicle I have ever had. There's no eating in Josie (my kids hate that rule, but understand). There is no clutter in Josie (I told the wife THIS is MY sanctuary and I don't need a trinket covering any bare space). There are no bumper stickers or decals on Josie (although, there is a cool, white Texans logo which would go real nice with the color on the back windshield). You get the picture. (Yes I named her, "Josie").

So short story, long. I was reading the manual and am ASTONISHED that this vehicle requires so many "specialty" fluids. For example, it took me two days to match up this MOPAR anti-freeze (10 yr, 150,000 mile) fluid part number. I FINALLY found it on E-bay for $28.00 total.

So now MY QUESTION. I have always put Mobil One Synthetic Oil in all of my past vehicles and I truly believe this is the cause of my past vehicles lasting as long as they have. I believe in synthetic oil. So.

1. IS IT SAFE to put Mobil One synthetic oil in a 2014 Jeep Patriot (manual)?

2. Is there a "special" oil filter I HAVE to use on this Patriot as well?

Any input would be helpful. Thank you!:pepper:

Gratz on the purchase and welcome!

Many have changed over to synthetic oil because it gives that extra boost in benefits. You can use synthetic in almost any vehicle. Really unless you have run regular oil in a vehicle for 100k or more then you can do the switch. I am about to switch to synthetic myself and have used it in my previous vehicles.

As far as oil filter there really is no special filter. The normal ones are just fine.

Conventional, synthetic blends, and full synthetics are all fine and the filter brand is irreverent. Just remember you get what you pay for.

My jeep had 90000km of conventional on it when I bought it so I have stayed conventional. Partly because I'm off warranty and I change it myself about every 4000-5000km. It gives me an excuse to crawl around and check things out on the jeep every few months and at that rate I'd be pouring out a lot of decent synthetic oil. If I didn't do my own changes I might use synthetic to save on the labour.

Filter isn't too critical, I use fram cause they're cheap and available anywhere. They're rated for like 8000-12000 km or something WAY further than you should go before changing your oil in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum! You will find a lot of valuable info here from a bunch of great owners.

Per the above, you're ok switching to M1 now, and Mobil happens to have a $12 rebate for 5qts going on through the end of May. You can go with high end filters (M1, Amsoil, K&N, etc...) but really Mopar (Purolater) or Fram Ultra Guard are fine. Just stick with a brand name.

You really shouldn't need a coolant flush for a few years, but power steering, tranny and brake fluid changes will help your longevity goal. Air/cabin filters and plugs at recommended intervals are also good for your new Pat.

Enjoy your ride!

A quick follow up to anyone still seeing this.. The manual says to use 5w20. Is that true for synthetic oil as well? I know I'm being stupid about this but it's about to have it's first oil change (by me) and I want to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid to cause the engine to lock up on me. 5w20 seems a bit light. I've always used 10w30, but..

What do y'all use?

5w-20 is the factory spec, so your fine with that or 5w-30 will also work. Apparently, 5w-30 is the spec outside of N. America due to our EPA/CAFE requirements.
The sump only takes 4.5 qts of oil, which will show half way on the dipstick.

I agree with that! ^^^

My first oil change was a semi-synthetic, and my second oil change was Valvoline full synthetic. My last few oil changes I ran Royal Purple with good results.

My next oil change at 70,000 I plan to switch to Amsoil because of how well it performs for a reasonable price. I will likely change it every 10,000 miles at first and putting a new filter on every 5000 as an added measure of protection.
