Hey all...been reading these forums the last couple months...great place to learn here...thanks for all the info...

1st time Patriot owner...got a 2011 Latitude X 4x4 FDII, loaded, silver, great looking vehicle that had been sitting on the showroom floor for quite a while (build date of October, purchased end of March). Been loving it...good follow-up to my 1997 Cherokee Country with 167,000 miles on it. The Cherokee's still running fine, but my parents were moving out of their '96 GC with 270k on it, and the opportunity for a deal was hard to pass up.

However...I'm starting to learn some tough lessons and could use some encouragement. Six weeks, 1500 miles in, my Patriot made a big knocking sound around the transaxle and shifted itself to neutral while i was on the interstate on a Saturday night at 11:00. Pulled over and tried shifting between park and drive and even low gear, but it would not move--just rev. Got towed, and was told on Monday that it needed a new CVT. They said they'd be probably be able to get a new one in a couple days. Well, Wednesday comes, and they call me. Apparently they're having trouble getting one. It's on backorder from Japan (still from the earthquake, the repairman said), and they were supposedly talking to their regional rep to see if they could get one off the factory assembly line. But at this point, there is no timeline for getting it back.

For better or worse, I'm glad I still have my Cherokee, but I'm a little depressed by this current turn of events. Hope to contribute some lighter/happier thoughts once this mess is clear! Thoughts? Encouragement?

Kevin

Hang in there, Kev. I understand it's frustrating especially when it happens to a brand new vehicle. Hopefully the new tranny won't cause any problems once put in. If it makes you feel any better, you're not alone it happened with. I remember reading another member had the CVT gave up on him as well, but once replaced there haven't been any problems since.

definitely suxs, really not the experience you're putting yer cash on the table for, sorry to hear it. Just one of those things, i guess, like being hit by lightning

but ferget the old cherokee. You *must* be entitled to a loaner from your dealer (among other things), no? Me, I'd be fishing for a wrangler unlimited or commander. All the fun of for a couple weeks, without the lifetime gas costs

Wow. That is one heck of a first post. I hope your problems get resolved sooner than later.

Don't back down on a loaner and don't accept anything but a fine running/fine looking Pat, when you get it back.

I recommend calling Chrysler/Jeep customer service to one, let them know of the issue and two, see what they have to say about what you should "expect", from your dealership.

Hi K2, that is a bummer. It is unfortunate you got a bad one. I think you are definitely entitled to a decent replacement vehicle for the time being. I hope things work out well for you; good luck.

Thanks for the support. We've come to Monday, and no developments. So, as of this point, I'm at nine days without it. I don't know how easily the factory would give a CVT up off the assembly lines.

On a light note...don't knock that Cherokee too hard! I've had it since it was new and it still holds a soft spot for me...and if they'd have made that same flame red in the Patriot now as my Cherokee in 1997, I'd have probably gotten it!

I am entitled to a free car...I just haven't had time to deal with it. Self-employed means my work has stayed busy too much every day.

I have to say that I really had liked the Patriot up to that point, and provided this issue is resolved, I still am excited to have it. I actually missed it this weekend...would have loved having the (admittedly gingerbread) hatch speakers blasting out the back while I was outside all afternoon Saturday.

Will continue to update...thanks for all the support so far!

i can tel you worse stories that would scare you about a bmw x5,but i know it won't make you feel any better.
it's just one of those things.can happen to any brand, and it does.
you'll get it back and it will be ok.
be happy it is under warranty and you don't have to reach into your pocket!

Stopped into the dealer today. They are now saying it could be the middle of next month before they can get the part. Apparently, they aren't even making it right now.

So, I decided to take them up on the rental. They don't have any SUV's available at the moment, so I'm in a Dodge Charger for the meantime until the weekend, when they say they should get some SUV's in.

That's the update for now...

By the way...additional note to this whole saga that keeps getting stranger...

As on my way home with the Charger last night, the Check Engine light came on. Took it back to Enterprise, who quickly switched me out of the Charger into a...Chevy Colorado.

Since I need cabin room for a lot of my day-to-day activites, they'd akready promised to try snd get me an SUV come the weekend. So, by the end of this, I may very well end up driving every vehicle this Enterprise location's garage!

Good news of sorts...the local Enterprise was able to get me into a Jeep yesterday. A nice silver Grand Cherokee. I now get to drive that until my Patriot comes back. The rest of the story is unchanged.

Hey...realized I had forgotten to update everyone. I got my Patriot back on June 18th. It ended up being about three days over a month from breakdown to return. I've been driving it pretty regularly these last couple weeks, and it's been running great since then. It felt nice to have my own vehicle back!

Just wanted to say thanks to all for the support and advice...

Sorry to hear about your experience with the CVT, KJAJ2. Im on my second Patriot with a CVT, the first performed flawlessly. I have an observation for you...The dealer told you he was waiting for the part to be shipped from Japan, and it was delayed due to the earthquake? It has always been my understanding that the CVT in our Jeeps was made by JATCO, in Mexico. In fact, the window sticker in my 2011 FDII SAYS the trans is made in Mexico. Kinda odd....
