Firstly hello everyone.

We bought a 2010 Patriot 2.0 CRD LTD new and it has had relatively few problems. Its mostly driven by my wife it has done 20k and the nearest it gets to off road is being on our driveway.

Anyway it just failed its first MOT due to excessive play in both lower front balljoints and from what I can gather its not the first :icon_rolleyes:

My first reaction is to go and scream at the dealer but I don't think I would get anywhere and I dont need any more stress.

I would like others opinions on the best course as I dont want the repair to fail someday on the motorway with catastrophic ending.

1. Get new control arms off ebay and fit them myself (easy) and relatively cheap at around ÂŁ80 a pair but it worries me where they come from ... made in somebodies back room in China from recycled kettles ?

2. Fit new bearings to the existing control arms, ÂŁ25 each and quoted ÂŁ100 fitting ( I don't have access to a press to remove and refit.) At least the metal parts would be decent as they would be original but the ball joints of course could be of questionable origin but bought from a local motor factors at least I would have some comeback. I prefer to do my own repairs though as then I know its done right. ( I drive a company car and have first hand experience of the crap work done by dealerships, and have been in many small garages with lump hammers.

3. Buy pattern control arms from local motor factors at ÂŁ200 each (owch) downside is they might just be from the same back room as the ebay ones but bought locally I might have some comeback.

4. Leave it in a dealership and take out a second mortgage and have a guarantee for what it might be worth .. didnt even bother to price this option.

I suppose I may be worrying too much about fitting "cheap" parts but as an engineer I can't help thinking of that old saying you get what you pay for and I don't want rid of the wife just yet.

I cannot post a link but the parts are Ebay listing 150960575641
Thanks for reading.

I saw those LCA's when browsing e bay. Personally, I wouldn't have given it a second thought and bought them. I don't need any yet at 63,000 miles but if I did then yes, why not.
I don't suppose the OEM,s are superior. I suspect that the only difference would be the price.
Who knows where anything is sourced these days.

This is my opinion only of course, you must make up your own mind and do what you feel comfortable with.

Harbor freight sells a ball joint press kit for around 50 bucks US. Also (at least in the US) most major auto parts suppliers will rent or loan you tools including a ball joint press. I use moog ball joints when replacing the units on my Ford trucks. Good quality stuff. Will use them when it comes time on the Patriot.

Well the control arms arrived the Saturday before Christmas and in fitted them on Friday. The look to be equal quality to the originals particularly the weld round the housing for the front bush so I guess I should order a set of Moog ball joints and fit them to the lca's that I removed for next time they fail.

I took it for the mot retest and we are all legal again.

Just noticed this thread. Same problem occurred with me. However, as my Patriot was still (just) within its warranty period, they were both replaced free of charge. That was December 2010. Since then have covered 40,000 miles and 3 MOT's with no problem, so maybe the replacements were of better quality than the originals.

I have a set of the cheapo control arms with ball joints off Ebay.Think i gave $96 a pair.Ive got 12k miles on mine so far and no problems plus the ball just came with a grease zerk.I think they were stamped on the arm that they come from a place called Autoparts International.Look pretty much the same as oem with the exception of the ball joint since it is greaseable and the oem isnt.
