hello patriot fans. I'm looking at purchasing one to tow a light pop-up camper. The pop up weighs 1500lbs and I see the Patriot's tow capacity is 2000lbs with the tow prep group. Does anyone see a problem with this? Other than the pop-up I'll have my wife and myself with light cargo in the Patriot.

Also, in order to add the trailer tow group you have to add package 25E which adds a bunch of options that I could care less about... Does anyone know if it is possible to bypass package 25E and still add the tow group? I believe the tow group just adds an engine oil cooler and wiring harness, do you think it's possible to add these in myself so that I don't need to buy package 25E? Thanks

-Randy

*edit* When I spec through cars.com it forces package 25E on when you choose tow prep, when I spec through edmunds.com it allows me to add tow prep group without the package..??

I'm not too sure about the option package and how you will be able to get around 25E... Your local dealer might have more insite, or someone on these boards too.

For the trailer tow group - I'd recommend it but I don't really like to get my hands dirtry turning wrenches under a car anymore. I like the fact that the wiring for the trailer will come pre-installed and so will the added cooler for the oil.

As far as the pop-up goes, you should be fine... Jeeps ratings seem to be fairly accurate when it comes to towing stuff.

I have ordered a Limited and asked the dealership to research the addition of a hitch assembly when the Pat comes in. The tow group adds a oil cooler(I suggest you don't try to add this yourself) and the hardware to connect a wiring harness too.

This is the cost from my local dealership to cut out the bumper trim and add the receiver and wire.

"Here is the order on your all new 07 Jeep Patriot Limited. The hitch, wiring and labor comes to $523.25. Let me know if you need anything or have any question."

Hope this helps???

The engine and transmission cooler are offical Patriot accessories that the dealer can install separate. The MSRP for those are in the accessories catalog here: http://wkjeeps.com/misc/Patriot/2007_Patriot_accessories1.pdf

One thing to keep in mind on towing capacity (Ive been looking at popups and this is what Ive been told) is the weight of all the gear and food and stuff your planning to load as well. Especially if your popup has watertanks, you'll want to check the weight w/ the tanks loaded. They said a car rated 500 lbs over dry weight was ok, as long as I filled the water tanks at my destination.

I am thinking about getting the FDII with this cooling package. Is anyone here actually towing a trailer with it yet that can comment? My buddy says I should be leary because it's only a V4 and recommends instead a V6. I thought it was rated at 2,000 without?

I currently have an E150 Okanagan Camper Van (a.k.a. The Bob Sled) that I am looking to sell towards a Patriot and look to invest in a small tent trailer so have been following this thread with interest.

Indeed, I've taken my van up mountains and beyond some trails... but have found myself stuck in a few places. Why I need true 4x4 Trail Capability these days.

I noticed the Cooling kit is the same price for Manual or Auto. Seems kind of strange since the Manual has no use for a Tranny Cooler. I wonder if all this option gives you is an extra Mechanical Fan and that's it.

I also looked up the part #'s on the internet. Found it on a couple sites, but there's no picture. I bet it's just an extra fan and that's it. If that's the case it's not a very good deal.
