I'd agree with the website except for the Patriot.

Why kill of an affordable fuel efficient vehicle? Id assume that Jeep doesn't make a ton of each Patriot sold but they do sell and quite well..

If Jeep should kill off a MK it should be the Compass since the Patriot outsells it every month.

 

HA!! Just finish commenting on this article; glad to know I'm not the only Jalop around here.

 

Jalopnik can be funny at times I agree with most of the time, but I think putting the Jeep Patriot on this list was purely based off how the experts review the car and no one really taking the time to research how well it sells or how owners like it.

I seriously doubt there is anything on the road today that can do what I do with my patriot...

The Avenger, the Patriot, and a few others shouldn't be on that list. That burgundy Honda looked ok, not sure about the MKT, but I agree that the bug-ugly Mitsubishi toy car at #3 should die.

 

Have you driven the avenger? It neeeeeeeds to be updated. the one with the pentastar is awesome fast, but that's all it is... I wish they would update the interior and suspension...

 

yeah, I am looking at 1-3 year old cars that have already lost their value. I am hard on cars...

 

You'd probably get a great deal on a new 2013 Avenger or 200 that they have leftover on the lot. Massive rebates and low financing is usually what dealers do to get rid of their old stock.

You should look at the 300 or Charger.. 2013 brand new.

FWIW, the MSRP on my Charger was $26k, on December 30, 2008, my OTD price was about $15,750. And yes it was a brand new car.

You can get a great deal on a new car from last model year, you just gotta look for a dealer who's willing to deal.

I'm not in total agreement with this list maybe because three cars on that list are in our family: Patriot, Terrain and Avenger. All three are great, comfortable and reliable and don't look like every other car on the road.

what year is your avenger? do you have a v6 or 4cyl?

 

my local dealer has a bunch of 2013's with less than 15k miles for under 16k... I am going to see if I can get one for under 13 otd. if I can, I may get one to replace my DD that is on its last legs....

 

Why not a second Patriot? Or if going used, you might consider a used Tracker (or Suzuki)

 

I've thought about it. but being my commuter... I couldn't justify getting a 4x4 in az with no snow, and I can't bring myself to buy a non 4x4 jeep.

I've looked at the grand vitara (I really like them a lot) but again, I would only buy one that has the 4x4 with the transfer case with 4low. which are rare and when I do find them.. not cheap.

 

My Tracker is an 03, has over 220K miles on it, 4cyl, runs great, and will go anywhere, as long as clearance is not an issue.

I'm looking for another one now, an 03 Tracker, with a 4 cyl. Hopping to find one in the south for about $5K, with less than 100K in miles.

 

ouch. At least you seem to have gotten the better end of the deal, from where I'm sitting anyways

 

GV is better off road, with better aftermarket options (def here in SA), but it is also quite a bit smaller - was on my shopping list when I bought my Patriot.

Yeah, but as I recall it's technically not an American rig. The Patriot, despite now being a design owned in Italy, is still a Jeep vehicle and a very sturdy, dependable one at that.

 

Suzuki is Japanese, with top notch quality.

Not a bad one, by the looks of it. But I hear the Monte Carlo is actually decently powerful and extremely aerodynamic. NASCAR wanted the design slowed down before allowing it to compete.

 

Funny, I kind of like a few vehicles on that list... go figure.

 

We have both the Patriot and a Suzuki XL7 which is a longer and bit more upscale version of the Grand Vitara.

XL7 better off road, full frame and transfer case will do that.
Wash on the highway
Wash around town
Patriot wins on fuel.

Both are fine vehicles.
Patriot wins overall because it is 2011 and the XL7 is 2001.

When we bought the XL7 new in 2001 we had all five kids at home more or less.
The first three were in university but home a lot...you know how it is.
We kept it even after everyone left home and for good this time, hope, hope, hope......it tows, carries all of us plus a proper amount of camping gear...quality in and out...

One thing about the Suzuki...the front diff is actuated by an air pump that pushes air.
That pump is mounted on the frame rail passenger side. Easy to get to, unrepairable, no aftermarket piece available so you wil be stuck with dealer prices if it goes...ask me how I know! Or you can drive around 4x2 looking good, eh?

Can't remember but it was bigger bucks that I would willingly spend. $600 springs to mind but don't hold me to that.

Anyway, we are keeping the XL7 going and in repair because it is a worthy vehicle, for sure.

 

Test drove an avenger with the v6 this evening. That thing has some balls man... Its been too long since I've driven a car with actual horsepower...

 

Until you drive a RWD V8 powered car... You honestly don't know what you're missing... and these days they get almost as good gas mileage as a normal old patriot

Yeah, but They are way out of my price range.

With the current rebates, we were talking high teens in price. Tempting enough to trade my patriot in and cut my payments by over 1/4. It wouldn't take me long to save up for an off road beater.

It sure sounded good when I started it up. Just a little bit of a throaty growl, and very very smooth...

Is there anything else in the sub $20k mark that has a v6? (I know that technically its like 22k, but with almost 4k in rebates it brings it well below that)

 

I'm always watching the weekly ads. Seems the Chargers and Challengers (both V6's), dressed comparably are always priced the same and it's not uncommon to see them on special for "mid-high 19's". The Avengers go for dirt cheap but finding the V6 is a trick. Most are our 2.4's. The '14's are actually going for less than my '11. It was the first year of the pentastar and they didn't budge a bunch....but I still did ok. It stickered for 26+ and I got it for 21,4 before T&L. Can't complain.
