The Patriot has "landed" here in Germany, finaly.
So today i had a first view at the Pat in our local dealer showroom wich mean i also couldn´t testdrive it yet.
Anyway i was able to have close look at a green 2008 Sport version because there was no limited at the dealer.
The differences/similaries? i noticed between the US and german version:

- Yeah the ugly big front bumper. Well it didn´t look that ugly as on the images i found in the internet. It was so lala. I still prefer the US bumper.

- The Standart Radio supports RDS

- Dome lamp for second row with no switch

- Roof Antenna but it was unscrewed so i couldn´t see the length of it

- 2.0 CRD version with 6 gears

- heated rearview mirrors

Outside:
It´s somewhat similar in size to my current Minvan maybe 1 or 2 cm higher but i noticed that the lift gate didn´t swing up that high. Better for my wife not so good for my head ;)
It comes with 17" alu wheels and 4 disc brakes and it´s a 4x4 version no 4x2 version here in Germany. I realy like the boxy design of the Jeep there are enough rounded cars on our streets.
So outside view is ok for me even with the ugly front bumper.

Inside:
Seats feel very soft and comfortable. It´s realy different to the strong more hard seats we regulary prefer here in Germany. It comes with the YES interior as standart (limited has leather). I noticed that the front seats could be slided way back more than i needed and i´m about 1,90m tall.
Havn´t checked if the driver seat could be lifted? Can it?
The interior, the hardplastic, not that bad as mentioned in some reviews but i have to say it´s not on par with german cars. Anyway it´s ok for me. I like cars wich can be cleaned easely and a car is more a utility for me rather than my living room.
What i didn´t like are the airconditioner outlets (spelling?)
They didn´t open/close easely and the plastic bend somewhat if i tried it.
I was also very hard to move the metal rings (spelling?) in the cargo room.
Sitting on the back seat was ok for me even on the middle seat with the cup holders between my feets. But there won´t be many times where i need this seat.
Lot´s of pros and a few cons. Need to see the Pat on our streets and more importand i need to drive it to make a conclusion.

Rends

PS: The Pat is realy expensive here. It´s at the same price range like a Toyota RAV4 or VW Tiguan.

- heated rearview mirrors
That should raise some hackles here in the U.S.

Not to be a schwanz, or too much of one, but you asked for spelling, so...

finaly = finally

standart = standard

minvan = minivan

realy = really

wich = which

importand = important

easely = easily

airconditioner = air conditioner

bend = bent (past tense of 'bend')

feets = feet (plural of 'foot')

You've seen the extent of my facility in the German language so we needn't go into that. :)

Rends - Thankyou for your comments on the European/German Patriot. Its good to hear a lot of positive stuff. You are lucky to have the CRD engine. I would trade you my American bumper for your Diesel engine!!

The driver seat -does- have a lifter. However, I don't know if all models have it. Its the BIG lever on the left side.

Dr. English wishes to convey that, no, he cannot read. Nor can he write. He is much too busy for either. As his personal manservant, I take dictation and read aloud to him, that he might have time to manage his personal affairs and attend to the needs of the less fortunate. He finds your insolence most unpleasant.

Come on we want to see it! How is the bumper different. By the way, I can't speak for everyone but those of us with Limited '08s do have second row lighting, but I think most of us are jealous of the heated mirrors (at least until the first time one gets ripped off, had it happen in a new Tundra Limited to the tune of $800).

Thanks for the info, Rends. It's surprising that the Patriot took that long to reach the German market. I'm sure it can be a success there with so many customers and such an 'automobile culture'. As you once said, it seems like everybody's crazy about getting a Tiguan or a Qashqai, but they're more expensive than the Patriot.

Yes, the driver's seat height can be adjusted using a lever. In my opinion, the international bumper looks better than the domestic-market (US) one, but it's lower, so the car has a smaller angle of attack and so its off-road capabilities are somewhat reduced. And you're right, after a couple of months with the car, the hard plastic interior is not such a big deal and it can be cleaned easily. But there should be some padded surface on the side and central armrest and in general there are many little details that show bad design in the interior.

Hi Rends, Hi Europat,
I too have the same dilema as you Rends.
Here in France the RAV4 and Honda CRV and Quashqai are similar prices to the Patriot, on the face of it they seem to be the sensible choice all being proven products with great reliability, higher quality interiors and with better dealer networks (well here anyway).
But there's just something about the Patriot, the retro way it looks & the Jeep image all play a part in this. I don't know really what it is, it just has a lot more appeal for me, maybe it the "less is more" thing. Anyhow life gets boring being sensible all the while. Don't you think?
I'm 98% going for the Pat this March, there's a 9% discount to be had at the moment, but I don't have the cash yet!

Hi AGOG,
sorry for the late answer but you are right. There is something that makes the Patriot different from the rest. Must be the design - the brand - driving something different or all together.

Hi Ash,
can´t wait for your report :)

the german patriot sounds like the export model - we get here in oz except driver on wrong side

Patriots are cheaper than rav4 and crv etc here in oz - we have a free trade agreement with thailand and USA so cars are cheaper if made there.

just remember when accessing the JEEP interior - it looks cheaper but it is so much easier to clean and maintain

Ok thx for Grammar checking.

Well i didn´t took any images but i found some similar to the one i checked at the dealer:

The price was about 28000 € (~39000$) but i´m sure it would be 15-20 percent less after some talks with the dealer. It´s regular that you get some rebate (10-30 percent less depends on the model and your Negotiations succsess)

@Keeping Fingers Crossed, lol, i dunno. In fact i didn´t drink that much beer anymore but knowing that beer at the Oktoberfest will cost you some 10 dollars/beer it would be a good idea to have some in the cargo room,lol.

Well what i still would like to know if the air conditioner outlets and the 4 metal rings (to fasten your cargo net or something like that) are also hard to move?
If so could it be changed?

I checked the Jeep US website and build the sport and limited models with the options you get here in Germany. notice that you can´t build your own Jeep here in germany, there are the sport and the limted versions and the only stuff you can add are the enhanced audio systems and car color.

A compareable german (gas) sport version will cost you in the US about $20.600.
If you now add 19 percent tax (german tax) it will cost you $24500 wich is similar to 24.490 euros you have to pay here.
Limited gas version (CVT only here) cost about 24.300. Now adding 19 percent tax it will be $28917 nearly similar to the 28.390 euros here.

CRD (manual) versions are about 2000 euros more.

So it seems that Jeep calculate 1 $ = 1 € ( even if the exchange is about 1. € for 1.40 $ at the moment).
Someone might also wonder why i´m talking about a german version and not the euro version. This is because the options still differ from country to country.

I wonder how many Germans will 'lower' themselves to the Jeep's hard plastic interior. They are used to the typical Euro car in general having a higher quality of materials. If they see it as part of the car's character, ie designed to be tough and easy to clean, then that's a good thing. If they construe it as cheapness and cutting corners, they might not sell very many.

That´s correct and the reason why US cars in general doesn´t sell much here.
Jeep owners are very few and if so most want´s Wrangler or Grand Cherokee because off Offrad capability and/or driving something different as the mainstream.
So i don´t think that Compass or Patriots will be sold often here.
In 2007 AUDI sold 12500 Q7, BMW 22200 X3 and 14400 X5, Mercedes sold 18400 ML. Well still a different league but all german cars.
Toyota sold 16200 RAV4, Honda 9800 CRVs.
Now let´s come to Jeep: 2800 Grand Cherokees, 1300 Commanders, 530 Libertys and 630 Compass (introduced in April 07).
(all numbers rounded)
So imho i expect about 1300-1500 Patriots in 2008. Compare it with 20000+ i expect for the VW Tiguan (introduced in Nov07).

There are lot of reasons why i won´t go for a RAV4,CRV,Tiguan but possible for a Patriot.
Yes interior plastic quality is not on par but you mentioned it. It´s easy to clean and while we have dog and kids and plan lot of outdoor trips i need a car easy to clean and rough enough (not that i will do lot offroad trips).
So i need cargo room without high border. Interior should be doghair and mud resistant and so far Patriot fits in here very well.
And i hate it to own a car you see 20 times at the Wallmart parking lot too.

If i get the chance to test drive a Patriot and later decide not to go for a Patriot, well then i don´t know what my next car will be lol.

RAMBOY, yes we have or should i say had Wal Mart here in Germany. WM started with 20+ markets here a few years ago but they didn´t had much succsess. There are still too much rivals here but i choosed the store name you know as example for every othere store.

I guess Jeepster55 is correct and it´s the Airbig switch.

I still have 2 Questions about the airvends.
Bozzy agreed when he wrote
"Air vents - bend when trying to adjust up or down
Air vent control to adjust left to right feels cheap"

At the Pat i tested the Vents were very hard to move up/down and left/right.
can it be changed so it moves easier?
Same question goes to the metal rings (need a correct translation) in the cargo room. It was nearly impossible to screw/move them to attach a cargo net or other stuff .

#28 ·
Yes, and it does not say anything.....BTW,It is the "AIRBAG SWITCH" on the Compass ONLY! Does your owners manual show something differant? Please show us....................................................Even if it is not an export version.

Hi hvac59,
i stopped at our local Jeep Dealer today and had a second look at the Pat.
Now i need to correct me about the switch.
It isn´t the airbag switch but a 4 position headlight range switch.
Everytime you press ontop of the switch the head the electric motor controlling the headlamp up/down position moves somewhat so your enlighted field increase and if you press down the switch it decrease the range means moving the headlight down a step.

Sorry for earlier missinformation. Hope all is clear now.

Wow adjustable headlight range and heated mirrors. At least we have the better looking bumper in the United States. :D

Just wondering what else do the Euro Patriots have that we don't in the USA? :(

Rends,
Thank you 100 times,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I knew something looked unfamiliar and really appreciate you taking time to post this picture. I am thinking of using this switch location for something and was wandering what my options were for a switch to use as a starting point. You have helped a great deal.
