What makes the hitch manufacturers think cutting the bodywork is acceptable. They should engineer something that actually fits. I'll be damned if I am going to hack the fascia of my Rallye. Granted, the Rallye is a pretty small market to sell to, but all 2011 Compass and Patriot fascia now require a "trim" to fit? That is laziness on the part of the hitch mfg.

Or it's to keep the hitch at a reasonable height so you don't need a ridiculous tongue, or to keep your departure angle, etc...I think you should just trim it, if you do it right it will look good and if you need to replace the plastic for any reason it's like $80.
