I don't think you'll need anything special for 10% on asphalt; just first gear and down you go!

b. what about if it snows?

 

Rain: no problem,
Snow: Well, I'd probably use the fourwd lock when going down. If it's fresh, wet snow, then absolutely dead slow.

 

When I was 19 & in the motor trade & just been driving for 2 yrs , this was the sort of thing I would do in a Jaguar X-KE or a Vanden Plas 4 litre R--

I used the brakes & gearshift---I never thought to ask anybody........

 

10 degree grade? Your kidding! Right? I'm sorry. Slow down and just drive down it. It's no big deal. I drive roads like that twice a day and I rarely even slow down in inclement weather (snow included).

 

i had the same question actually jsut with steep grades offroad. with a 5 speed since theres no low what to do ?

first gear and slight touch on the brakes?

 

I think for 10% any cars first gear is well low enough!!

 

Try using the same gear you're in going up it.

 

Depends on the hill, you should know, nothing special for the Jeep, and I'd leave ESP on for on the roads. Use the gear that lets you idle and not use the brake.

 

What about driving down a rough dirt road with a 15 percent grade? Any particular stragety for going slow on this?

I'm trying to get my head around a Colorado feller even noticing a fifteen percent hill. It was a Colorado bloke last year whose advice for driving on backcountry roads on hard-packed snow was to "try to keep the speed below ninety to a hundred miles an hour"!

How about the main solution for that is driving slowly since it is going down. It's obvious that it is dangerous to drive fast when it is steep down. Right?

 

Well, it depends what's down there. Downhill driving is with better (or even with maximum) mpg or better acceleration. Whichever you prefer --- foot off from the pedal or pedal to the metal
