Anybody having GASCAP error followed by Engine Malfuction Light (Not Flashing)? I have re-seated the cap...no luck. I smell a service call.

Thanks!

What can happen with a gas cap if it is not on right is that it will do that and take several (don't know how many) driving cycles (where it is driven and shut off) before it re-sets itself. However, since yours is new and in warrenty, stop at the dealer and ask the service manager just to be sure. They can/should check it out.

yes,I did

I replaced my cap with an aftermarket lockable cap and the light came on very soon afterwards,
I called the dealer and he just told me to put on back the original cap and then wait few days and the warning light will go away on its own, sometimes the warning light may come up when the cap isn't fastened properly

Try a MOPAR lockable gas cap from the Dealer and that should work. Make sure the code is cleared first. They are not that much money and if that one does not work then they should REFUND your money since it is MOPAR. Ask your Dealer and see what he says. MOPAR wouldn't sell them if they didn't work. I put a MOPAR one on my jeep and had no problem with it. I think this is one of those things that you can sometimes have problems with if you are using an aftermarket product.

Just a thought.

Just got back from the dealer. Replaced the cap, still got the error. They needed to order a new "fuel leakage sensor". Going back in on Saturday. I'll let you all know if that fixes it.

They also fixed the rear gate, it would not close right. Sales guy said it was air trapped in the cabin. Tech said that was BS and fixed it...

So the saga continues...went back to the dealer to relpace the so called "bad fuel leakage sensor" and the tech admitted to me that it was actually missing...

After waiting 2 hours he comes back and says the engine light is off but the GASCAP Error is still there. He says to cycle the engine a few times and it may go away.

One week later...still have the GASCAP Error and the engine light is back on. Going back to the dealer again - round three on Monday. Not happy...1700 miles 3 visits for the same issue and..."missing parts"

Stay tuned...

The computer requires the tank to be sealed to pressurize so it can monitor the emissions system.
this is a good reason why you SHOULDN'T fill your tank with the engine running. it won't always do it, but it more than likely WILL set the 'Check Engine' light off.

don't know about all of you, but i absolutely HATE 'idiot lights' and this one especially!!! dealers hate it as well as 'Check Engine' can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a MAJOR malfunction.

if you're light comes on, it's ALWAYS best to consult your dealer ASAP. :smiley_thumbs_up:

Just got back from the dealer again...good driving snow today here in NY!

The bottom line is they installed new firmware/software that is supposed to fix the problem. GASCAP Error is still on but the check engine light has been reset and stayed off. The service manager told be the jeep had to sit off for 8 hours to reset. Basically the sensor for the gas cap needed to be reset and re-programmed and it works off the temp of the gases in the tank (8 hours sould be long enough to get a base line I guess).

They mentioned there is a new tech bulletin out regarding this issue, but I could not find it online. If I find I will post it.

Tomorrow I will send an update if the error goes away...

The good news is the dealership has been really cool through the process.

I was at 2600 miles this morning so the service manager threw me a free oil change...pretty cool of him.

Hopefully the end of this one...

I know on my Durango it wasn't a matter of just how long I drove... it was a matter of how many times I restarted the engine and drove... It was so much easier to just disconnect the battery positive terminal disconnected then touch the POS terminal to the NEG terminal (this is safe with just the positive terminal disconnected from the battery and was proven to me by the DODGE shop manager). This supposedly safely dead shorts the system draining the back up power from the system thus forcing a reset upon reconnection fo the positive terminal.

This is to be done at your own risk...remember I said I performed this on a Dodge Durango but it should work on a Patriot too.

There was also a trick with the durango that when the CEL Check Engine Light came one you could quickly turn the truck from off to run three times and on the third time you leaven it in run and it would show you the CODE on the odometer. Of course I found this out after I paid one shop to hook up the machine to tell me code for $50 bucks... Not sure if this works on our trucks too or not but its worth a shot...

So...it continues. Back to the dealer again! Same issues, they want to keep the jeep for a week or so to try to figure it out. I am going to request a factory rep. I am smelling lemons...could be my first lemon law. I am kind of torn because I really like the jeep, but I am concerned with the long term outlook.

#25 ·
good luck man...

But if it does come back you may want to suggest they perform a smoke test... (no this isn't a joke in reference to smoke and mirrors) they will inject smoke into the intake and use a UV light (I think) to check for leaks... On my durango they found a small leak in one of the hard hoses/ lines once this was replaced I never had the light come back on...

Well, I am going with the suggestion from JeepJim. The issue is back. I have another appt on monday...6 now for the same issue (3900 miles). They are now going to check the gas tank for leaks. To start the NY Lemon Law process - just in case - I am officially notifying Chrysler today. Such a small issue considering how much I dig this jeep...but really annoying now!

A couple of issues...this lists the CVT2 and I have the CVT1 & they are stating the build date is "considered proprietary to Chrysler".

Has anybody heard of this before?

Thanks!

No. they gave me my build date when I emailed and asked last august or september.

(tinfoil hat on) sounds like they are covering up manufacturing defects they know occured during a certain time by not letting owners know their Jeep was built during that duration.

...yes I did! I sent them email about $2,000 VIN rebate and their reply was that "...this information is not available at this time..." and "...if you need more information call 1-800-BS.."! I don't have any issues so far, well just have my Pat for a week and 360 miles. Good Luck!!!

#31 ·
Hey Bohemius,

If you call the "1-800-BS" number they will give you the build date! Good luck with your pat, even with this issue I still think this is a great jeep. As an update, the jeep is still in the shop (9 days now) they are expecting to get it bact to me tommorrow. They have basically replaced the entire evaporation integrity system now...I hope we are good!

#34 ·
You are correct on the CVT2...that was my error.

Here is the update. I picked the jeep up yesterday. No good, they could not fix the issue. It has been in the shop 26 days since January. They have replaced the entire leak detection system, pulled the gas tank and smoke tested it and still no luck. They also tried to charge me for the gas they put in while it was in the shop for the past 14 days...for the road tests. As you could imagine that conversation did not go well. I calmly (not really) chose not to pay. Bottom line is I have to bring it back on Thursday. The factory rep is coming in to check it out. This has been happening since the day I picked it up. The sales rep I bought it from has been great, he is trying to get them to give me a new one without going through the lemon law...stay tuned!
