Fun this weekend with my WJ *New Pics 2-22-2015*

Hey guys short story from my weekend for ya:

The rear tire on my Buell is flat (from a F'n thumb tack!) so I was hoping to get it all straightened out yesterday. Was at the bike shop waiting for the doors to open in the AM to pick up the tool to remove the rear axle, F/R bike stands, and pick up a pair of Pirelli Diablos (scored an awesome deal).

When I stopped back home on the way to my garage to grab a couple tools & my girlfriend is like "let's take the dogs up to the lake today!" At first I was like UGH... I really just want to get my bike fixed. She must of seen my reaction coming because she followed up with "We can test out the Jeep!". She would make a great sales person.

So we headed up to lake Pleasant. It's awesome up there. If you loop around to the North end of the lake there are a bunch of trails with many smaller trails that break off and lead down to the water. The "beaches" are rocky but there are also bluffs that you can jump off into the water. We like to get up there and let the dogs play, swim, fish, and mess with the burros but getting there is at least 1/2 the fun for me.

The trails are pretty tame for the most part. Kind of rocky with a handful of intermediate level obstacles to mess around with on the way that we've hit with the Patriot in the past. Most have bypasses for the faint of heart.

There is this hill that was the bane of my existence in the Patriot. I could creep up the first 2/3's of it but the final 1/3 gets really difficult. The hill gets a decent amount steeper and in the steep section there are fairly deep ruts that modulate from side to side that cut across the trail. Basically it looks like a truck with monster sized gnarly tires went up it while it was muddy and just spun, caught, spun, caught like 8-10 times.

I made it down said hill in the Patriot with some minor bottoming out, and the occasional wheel in the air, but could NOT make it up even with a running start. There is a "bypass" trail off to the side but even that was too steep to creep up and took 3 running start tries to get up in the Patriot. When I finally made it up it was a violent ride bouncing all over the place with tons of tire spin.

What makes it worse is that once you go down the hill there's no other way out. My girlfriend was with me when I did this and was pretty much freaking out when we didn't make it up the hill the first time. Frankly going down in in the Patriot was stupid (yet fun) and that day I learned the limits of the 4x2 Patriot.

So yesterday as we're getting to the trail head I tell my girlfriend "We're doing the hill", tensions soared LOL!

When We got to the top of the hill I dropped her in 4 low, crept down it, and turned around at the bottom. We started creeping up the hill from a dead stop. I purposely chose the hardest line up because I really wanted to see what she could do. It was a thing of beauty. The Cherokee just ate it up. No tire spin and no drama with the exception of the transfer case skid plate just slightly rubbing the crest of the biggest bump.

I wish I had taken video (I will next time) because I'm sure the suspension was at full up/down articulation throughout the steep section of the climb and it probably looked really cool.

Here's a pic I shot of where we finally parked to hit the lake:

Yup the WJ's have solid front/rear axles. They went to independent fronts in the WK's in 05.

The Quadra drive equipped WJ's like mine have a type of limited slip differential (called Vari-lok) in both the front & rear.

The Quadra drive system paired up with the Up Country package (1" lift, better shocks, tow hooks, skid plates) & tow package (3.73 gears) has already proven to me that it's a damn fine setup for off roading.

I'll be sure to take video next time.

Yeah right on, I was originally looking at WK's.

I think that Quadra Drive II system with the electronic lockers in the WK is a little better than the WJ's Quadra Drive I's Vari-Lok setup.

It's also easier to find a clean low mileage example of a WK because they are newer. I like the WK interiors too.

Ended up going with the WJ because when I put it next to a similarly equipped WK in similar condition & miles the WJ was $6k-$8 cheaper (AKA no car payment for me).

Also the solid front axle has more lift potential down the road which is important to me because I'm planning on turning it into a monster a couple years down the road.

Congrats on the WJ, I love mine and plan to own it forever. Once you build yours up you will like it even more

Here's a little inspiration :D

So far the only "mod" is hitch mounted recovery hook. :)

First up will probably be an intake for a bit more power/noise/mpg. Haven't decided which one yet (K&N/Air Raid/AFE/one other I forget the name of).

I haven't looked at the throttle body yet, but depending on the design I might port it while I have things apart. (Not enlarge the bore, just smooth it out for the best flow).

Up next will likely be a hand held tuner. I would greatly prefer to tune it myself with software but since it's only getting light engine mods a handheld will be OK. Been keeping an eye on craigslist for one of the superchip units and have called on a couple but both ads were old and they were already gone.

If I find a HO intake manifold on craigslist for cheap at some point I'll probably buy it as a little project.

New tint for the front windows is in the cards. Might even have the whole windshield done in a light tint with a darker stripe at the top.

Kind of want a cat back but my WJ already has the stainless exhaust option from the factory so I might as well just keep it as is. I haven't really looked at the factory setup yet but maybe can pick up a little more sound by deleting a resonator/extra cat.

I'm starting to lean towards holding off on lifting until down the road, and then doing a 4" longarm kit. It already has the 1" Up Country suspension which is in good shape and doesn't seemed to have sagged at all as it measures a solid 19" from hub to fender.

Tires are good enough for now I guess but I think the 2013 Rubicon wheels would look cool with some 255/75/17... But I would need to lift to fit them.

Update on Mods...

So the modding has begun. :D

I picked up a Superchips handheld tuner off of Craigslist for cheap. Flashed in the performance tune and the 4.7 is noticeably peppier.

Also ordered the Airaid JR intake setup. It consists of a better flowing intake tube, and a drop in (dry) high flow filter.

Went with the JR kit because I figured it would be a better setup for water fording since it retains the factory airbox.

How'd I miss this thread?! Awesome bud. Its a night and day difference going from a MK to a Solid Axled Jeep. Hills I used to barely make it DOWN let alone up in my ole FDII are a piece of cake now lol I wish I lived in AZ to wheel with you and 'Circles...we'd be tearin that state up!

Damn dude. How's the MPG in that? My 3.6L got 21.7 HWY on my way to San Marcos this past weekend :pepper:

With the intake/tune my MPG seems to be about 18 mixed and a bit over 19 highway according to the EVIC.

Most WJ owners say the EVIC is generous, but my tires are a little bigger than stock so it's probably pretty close. Maybe next time I fill up I'll calculate my actual mpg.

I'm a pretty big fan of the 4.7 so far. Great usable power & torque.

Yea I'm a big fan of my 3.6 for sure! And I get about the same city so you aren't missing much haha well, except for the performs e off road of the wrangler I guess haha

That sounds like a challenge... It's a wheel-off! :p

One of the crappy 2" "Tweeters" in the dash was blown so I bought a pair of Pioneer 2-way 3.5"s and dropped them in today. Sounds way better.

Also put on one of those rubber antennas that I had on my Patriot.

#21 ·
Cool! I saved my stubby antennae from my Patriot foolishly thinking that it'd fit on my JK ... Now it sits in my tool box :( I really liked it too lmao

What bolt pattern are the WJs? I can envision your Grand Cherokee with 31's on TJ Rubi MOAB wheels already dude! Just the normal silver colored wheels. Would be dope man.

It's 5x5 so the Rubicon wheels fit but it will need a lift before I can run bigger tires.

Probably going to hold of on the lift for a while though just to keep this thing as a sensible daily. It's plenty capable as is for the time being.

Next mods I have planned

Aux in mod
rubber front/rear/cargo mats
re-tint front windows & maybe the whole windshield

Ah cool cool...I have a laundry list of mods I want to do but practically none of them can be done for cheap :/ the bumper chop was really the only thing that was done/will get done for a while cause it was free lol well...I did buy wanna-be Dually's for only $100 in a group buy. They're virtually the same as the Rigid Industries ones just minus RI's more durable glass and front trim which has their name. These will work fine though. Not quite sure where I wanna mount them yet.

That sounds pretty cool.

I still have the light bar off my Pat but it doesn't really want to fit anywhere on the front of my WJ. Thinking of either just hanging onto it to use on my roof basket at some point down the road or trading it to my buddy with the TRD Tacoma.

What gears does your Wrangler have in it? Tried climbing anything really steep yet?

#25 ·
4Lo gets me up and over practically anything I throw at it. I know it's limits though so don't really push it haha

And I think the front is 3.21 so kinda sucks. The back is 3.76 I think idr lol that's the stock sport though. They go up in model you buy.

I wheeled today and found some mud on accident haha I had some fun climbing sh*t. I made a thread for it titled "Twin Butte Trails - San Angelo, TX 13May13"

Oh and I'm planing on buying a friends JKUR shocks and springs early next month and having it installed with a friend.

Took my WJ up to Table Mesa road last night.

Originally was planning on going to test fire my 24" Bull barrel AR but ended up spending most of the time just driving around in my Jeep.

Very impressed with what this thing can just crawl up.

MASSIVE STOCK FLEX!!!! (or not)

Took a couple vids but when I watched them afterwards they made the things I was
climbing look wimpy.

Nice dude! I can't see the pic for some reason though :hmmm: maybe it's cause I'm on my phone
