Hi Guys, I am new to this forum and new owner of Jeep Patriot 2016 2.4l

Who of you have experience in towing with the 6 speed trasmission ??
Can you tell me if you have ever had problems on long trips ????
I am planning my next trip (2000 miles round trip).
And I want to bring my motorcycle with me, trailer and motorcycle around 1800 Pounds.

Dealer Misinformation? That's a New One!!!

I have read where there is possible fitment issues with Patriots sold / manufactured in Mexico regarding coolers. I doubt that and I doubt that is the case in your situation either. Your Dealer is wrong. A Patriot with the 2.4 ltr 6sp auto-stick transmission maximum towing weight is 1000 lb.s. Trailer included. The addition of a cooler increases the towing capacity to 2000 pounds.
There is an awful lot of other good information in your manual.
I'm sure you will enjoy your Pat as much as I do mine!
Welcome to the forum from SoFlo.

update
(The 2016 Jeep build site under Latitude Trailer Towing Group list an engine oil cooler for your Patriot. It is in error. A transmission cooler should be listed instead. Your Dealers comment on the oil cooler
was accurate. I stand corrected.)

Anything is possible when towing--just don't push the vehicle. I've towed over 5,000 lbs. with my '08, but mostly on flat lands. No problems.
And, if the load is a little heavy or the road is slippery--BRAKE before the turn, then power thru it. Braking in a turn with a heavy load--and assuming you do NOT have trailer brakes--is the cause of "jack-knife" accidents.

Good luck!

Connect the Dots!!! Urban Legon Exposed!!!

Roberto, the response you got from engineering on the surface seems contradictory and got me curious. This is the kind of thing that "Urban Myths" spring from! The owners manual under Trailer Towing Weights list the category [Engine/Transmission category "2.4L Auto/Man with Trailer Tow Prep Package (AHC)" and under the "Maximum GTW (Gross Trailer Wt)" category list 2,000 lbs].

Jeep is responsible for creating this confusion, by having inaccurate and incomplete information on their website! What does the Trailer Tow Prep Group consist of? Click below and read the details. Among other items, it does literally list an "engine oil cooler" both with the 2.0L and 2.4L Power Package. Check it out at the Jeep.com link below, which is a build your Jeep site: Jeep - Build & Price - Select Model
Click on the Latitude model, then options and look for the 2 trailer options. Click on details.
(You will find that only the 2016 Patriot Latitude model has 2 Trailer Towing Prep Groups options available and this is where the confusion starts.)

The Trailer Tow Prep Group by Mopar consist of hitch only and list for $485. The other and second TTPG includes and is literally listed as an engine oil cooler, full size spare, wiring…and list for $250.00.

A little drifting here for a moment to add context. When I got my Jeep, see my signature below, I wanted to personalize it. While I was laid out on my side installing mud flaps, I looked around underneath to check it out. Low and behold, under my transmission there was a small, finned cooler descending about 4 inches and maybe 10 or 12 inches across.

I suggest taking a look under your Jeep and see if maybe there is already a factory installed transmission cooler. Particularly since you have the 2.4L 6spd. Power Package. Let Me know.

I thought I would check out the oil cooler part number #82210701 online. Interesting find.
Check this Mopar site at the link below, for an Engine Oil Cooler Kit application description:

Jeep Patriot Engine Oil Cooler Kit (Part No: 82210701)
Scoll down about a third of the page.

[ Engine Oil Cooler Kit
All Manual Transmissions and CVT Transmissions built on and after 12/2009 but without transmission coolers only.] for emphasis ie BUT WITHOUT TRANSMISSIONS COOLER!

So then...the engineering department is right as your dealer was also about the oil cooler #82210701 not being right for your vehicle.
However, they both should have clued you in on the transmission cooler!

I do not have The Trailer Tow Prep Group by Mopa and TTPG.
I have installed the hitch and wiring kit but not Mopar.

And I'm even more confused after looking installation instructions of Engine Oil Cooler Kit 82210701....anyway

I have to ask you, because I don't know about this Power Package...
ALL 2.4L 6 spd. Have this Power Package??????

This Radiator?????? (I have attached a picture)

I don't recognize it. I'll get a picture of the cooler on mine to you tomorrow. Check with your dealer to see what he can do to increase your towing capacity. Or ask if there is a cooler for your Jeep that he can order for you. (Evidently Jeep has 2 different types of coolers used to increase towing capacity on the Patriot and the 82210701 oil kit is not the one for you.)

Roberto
On closer look this morning, the picture of the cooler you posted is the same as the one I have on my Jeep. So its would seem that the 2.4L 6 sp. automatic transmissions are leaving the factory with a cooler. I wonder if the 2.4L with the manual tranys come with a factory equipped cooler also?
Maybe another member could check theirs out and comment.
This would be a good topic for Jeep Cares to shout out about. How bout it?

Towing with 6 speed

I have a 2014 Latitude with the 2.4 and 6-speed auto trans. I've asked everyone imaginable about adding an oil cooler and have been told it can't be added. This makes no sense because it was available as a factory option, so obviously the parts exist. The puck that mounts above the oil filter is the same regardless of equipment. The difference is the radiator hoses. I found a Patriot online that had the 2.4, 6-speed auto and the trailer package with the oil cooler and took the VIN to my dealer parts department. He looked up the vehicle and gave me all the parts numbers, but the radiator hose number he gave me didn't have the hoses to connect to the puck. If anyone wants I can post the parts numbers he gave me and you can research further.

The picture posted is a trans cooler, I think. To increase towing to 2,000 lbs requires an OIL cooler.

I am willing to do a little more research. Go ahead and post the part numbers.
So that puck shaped object in oil cooler kit #82210701 installs onto the oil filter housing. Makes sense. That kit on the Mopar website is listed as type 2. I wonder what the type 1 looks like.

I stopped by another dealer today, they told me the transmission cooler is available..... and 30 minutes later they called me and they apologized but was a confusion with the OEM transmission cooler already on the 2.4l 6 peed.
They did more research and came to the conclusion any Mopar oil cooler available do not Fit to the 6 speed AT.
The said when you buy the vehicle with the tow kit from the factory is different.. they build with oil cooler....
I try to build the vehicle on the Jeep website suggested from SoFlo and also there when you choose the tow kit hitch and the other kit... is wright (Trailer Tow Prep Group) Engine Oil Cooler (Unavailable with some configurations)
They suggested to me do not tow more than 1,000 pounds.

Something seems crazy about this whole thing. How is there no oil cooler for the 6 speed auto? From what I've been gathering from reading online in various places, some owners have installed part #82210701 on their 6 speed auto with success by following the manual transmission instructions.

Are they installing something that shouldn't be working? Will it cause their vehicle issues? Are they not actually gaining the benefit of the oil cooler even though it installed?

I wonder if anyone who was part of this thread two years ago has any updated experiences or information for us.

(Note: I am looking to tow between 1k and 2k lbs and I refuse to accept that I can't get my Compass to do so LOL...)
