Fan Direction Diverting Knob Malfunctioning

Okay, so I don't even know what to call the knob that diverts the air to your knees, face, or the windshield, so I just made up a name for it. Anyway, over the past couple of weeks, when I would twist the knob between settings for blowing the air at your face and feet, it took a really long time to change the air flow. Well, last night, when I drove to the grocery store, when I turned the knob, I realized that it doesn't work at any between settings anymore. Basically, you can have the air blow at your feet, face, or windshield - no in between or combination between two of them.

I don't really know how this could happen, so I don't even know where to start looking for a way to fix it. My Pat's only a couple months old, so I could take it to the dealership if that's what it comes to, but I honestly don't have any time to do that with the demands of school and work. I was wondering if any of you guys have experienced this and if there's a quick fix that I don't have to go to the dealership to get it repaired. Something is telling me it's going to be an electrical problem, so I'm probably going to have to take it in eventually when I have time... in December. haha

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That was kind of happening to me over the summer with the air conditioning. When I was switching positions on the dial, there was a long delay before it would take effect. I found that when I turned the fan setting to high, it sped the process along nicely. Only happened a few times though. If it becomes a regular problem, I figure that I have 2 1/2 years and 27k more miles to have the dealer take care of it.

A mechanical problem

Hello,
In all of my cars when I've had to access the area behind the knob or the knob itself it has always been a mechanical problem. That is, it usually is a linkage loose, slipped off, broken, or the vent duct slipped out of place. It has never been electrical, but of course you need to get in there and have a look. In all cases I have fixed it myself at no cost or very low cost. How it happens may be age, dirt, lint, etc. Hope it helps.

Mine has acted different from time to time although I admit i haven't investigated it or tracked what exactly it does but...

I do recall an old post about this very subject in which someone posted a description of how our blend function works, written by the Jeep engineer who actually programmed the thing.

Long story short...try a system reset either by pedal or battery disconnect. That settles my malfunction (if it even is the same as what you all are talking about) down right away.

Climate controls

It appears there are two types per the CD Version of the manual. In my 2014 Sport I have the manual ones:
CLIMATE CONTROLS
The air conditioning and heating system is designed to make you comfortable in all types of weather.
Manual Heating And Air Conditioning
Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) — If Equipped
Operating Tips

I think what that is referring to is the "auto" functions on the climate control, it's an option, it gives you the auto function on the bottom left of the fan speed control and vent control.

This is my 2008 Patriot with the "old" mechanical climate controls

This is from a 2009, even after the interior refresh of 2009 they still had mechanical climate controls

From looking more online it appears 2010 is the first year for Patriot and Compass using the electronic climate controls.

Hope that clears things up.
