Should I purchase an extended warranty for my Patriot? "gold plan" which extends warranty to 5 yrs / 100000kms, including oil changes for that period. My first new vehicle purchase, sl I don't know if I should get this (2100$ canadian for it).
What do you think:confused:

I didn't, but this is something the dealer may not tell you--you get a special price if you extend it now... but you can extend it at the special price for up to 12 months/12,000 miles. So, I decided not to do it now... but wait and see. If I feel like I might need it, I have time to decide but can still get the special price...

Actually, I "get" (included in the price) oil changes at the recommended 3months/5000 kms for the 5 year period. It's a value of about 750$ cdn. It's a "gold plan" as they call it (with roadside assistance, blah blah blah).

Yuck, sounds confusing, but it also sounds like its probably worth it. My last car was new and I sold it right after it ran out of warranty, I simply couldn't risk having to pay 2,000$ for a freak repair. They certainly seem to take care of you!

In general, extended warranties aren't worth it. My dealer wanted to sell me coverage that would take me out to 5 yrs 70,000 for about $1,200. I believe that in most cases, any "defective" item on the vehicle will go within the initial warranty period. Afterall, these are major money makers. When you take into consideration that $1,200 (in my case) has to pay for the warranty company's profit and the sales persons commision, the expected payout for the warranty company is very low. So, low that you should just bank money away in order to pay for any unforseen repairs, instead of pre-paying for a repair now.

When I buy my Patriot I am going to try to negotiate with the delaer to get him to throw in the extended warranty for free.

I remember when I was a kid all Mopars came with a 7/70 warranty. Now they want us to pay extra just to get to 5 years!?!
